This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

The Russians received word of the trip, we are informed—and presumably the threat, stated or implied, that they would get a violent and overwhelming response if they attempted to interfere with it. For a leader obsessed with strength, like Putin, that is a blow. His own people will quietly or openly ask, “Why could we not prevent this?” And the answer, unstated, will have to be,“Because we were afraid.”

I thought so! :)

Medvedev or IMCC? Hard to tell them apart these days.

Leaders of NATO members shouldn’t be saying that…
Consider the source. That is a pro-Russian account. Look at the rest of the tweets. Note that there is no link and no way to determine if that is even a legitimate quote.

I highly doubt it is.

When you only have one card to play then I guess you play it?

I don’t understand this. 16k? I thought Mariupol alone would be over 16k.
Usually there is a statement about the actual civilian deaths being believed to be much higher. FWIW I wouldn't be surprised if it is ten times that amount, just based on the destruction and fighting in the larger cities.

"OHCHR believes that the actual figures are considerably higher, as the receipt of information from some locations where intense hostilities have been going on has been delayed and many reports are still pending corroboration. This concerns, for example, Mariupol (Donetsk region), Lysychansk, Popasna, and Sievierodonetsk (Luhansk region), where there are allegations of numerous civilian casualties.
Civilian casualties from 1 to 12 February 2023(individual cases verified by OHCHR)"
