This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

I don’t understand this. 16k? I thought Mariupol alone would be over 16k.
Usually there is a statement about the actual civilian deaths being believed to be much higher. FWIW I wouldn't be surprised if it is ten times that amount, just based on the destruction and fighting in the larger cities.

"OHCHR believes that the actual figures are considerably higher, as the receipt of information from some locations where intense hostilities have been going on has been delayed and many reports are still pending corroboration. This concerns, for example, Mariupol (Donetsk region), Lysychansk, Popasna, and Sievierodonetsk (Luhansk region), where there are allegations of numerous civilian casualties.
Civilian casualties from 1 to 12 February 2023(individual cases verified by OHCHR)"

The leadership shown by Biden is simply incredible by anyone's interpretation.

For all his faults, there is no other person that I would want leading the effort.

And FVCK Russia.
You know, you'd think you expect nothing from someone in his position and are surprised when he does something. I'm glad he finally went, but you've got rose colored glasses on

I think you're underestimating the significance of the timing of the visit.

And I can't imagine the planning logistics of a visit of this magnitude.

This had to be "in the works" for months.

Would it be in the works for months, or would it be only very last minute to prevent word from getting out? It seems like the longer something like this is stewing, the more likely that loose lips will hear of it.

Lining up security, by itself, had to a massive undertaking, imo.

And I don't think we have the same level of "info leaks" that we had under the previous administration where Turd spouted stuff just to impress people.

Biden is the perfect President for the current situation.

Planning was taking place long before the trip. The final decision to go was made Friday.

I probably wasn't clear. Planning on our end certainly has gone on for months. I have a feeling that we had a plan in place, complete, for whenever we decided to pull the trigger. And then, on like Wednesday, we called up Kiev and said "It's happening, and here's exactly what you're gonna do to make it happen. **** around and find out."

Ehh, Reagan would have been even more hard line and probably got more and more deadly aid to Ukraine much faster.

But he's a RINO now, I guess.
After Iran Contra, my opinion of Reagan changed. Reagan wasn't the great leader he was made out to be, imo.

I've said this several times in this thread, but I am flabbergasted at the attitude/position of many republicans, as it relates to what Reagan stood for. Yes, he was a conservative, but he saw Russia for what it was, and took every chance he could to bleed them dry or neuter them. We would have been all over giving Ukraine just about every conventional weapon in the arsenal.

I imagine this is standard protocol for any world leader visit to Ukraine. If Russia killed any major political figure it would be go-time for NATO. Everyone wants to minimize the chance of that.

I love the visit, the only quibble I have is that the air raid sirens were over the top propaganda. No way Russia was launching missiles during that visit.

Pretty Alpha on Biden's part....

Wonder if it had any help, after all they say it was re-supplying a warship.

"A Russian merchant ship sank in the Black Sea off the coast of the Krasnodar Territory. Supposedly, he's delivering provisions to the Moscow cruiser . The ship broke in half."

"The Moskabelmed hotel is on fire in the center of Moscow Previously, one of the guests started the fire by setting fire to his belongings in the common corridor on the fifth floor. Firefighters are evacuating people from the building."

The Russians received word of the trip, we are informed—and presumably the threat, stated or implied, that they would get a violent and overwhelming response if they attempted to interfere with it. For a leader obsessed with strength, like Putin, that is a blow. His own people will quietly or openly ask, “Why could we not prevent this?” And the answer, unstated, will have to be,“Because we were afraid.”

"Traffic was brought to a standstill at the border between Poland and Belarus on Tuesday as authorities moved to close all roads between the two countries.

The Polish Foreign Ministry confirmed on Monday that Minsk sacked three Polish officials after reports emerged that a Polish border guard and two members of the Polish Consulate in the border city of Hrodna had been expelled.

It comes as ethnic Polish journalist Andrzey Poczubut, a critic of Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko's regime, was jailed two weeks ago for eight years, a move which has once again stoked tensions between the neighbouring countries.

Poland’s initial response was to close the Bobrowniki border crossing, one of two direct land routes for trucks and motorists. It has also withdrawn its consuls from the Belarus cities of Grodno and Minsk."
