I never said they were "great", just good players that couldn't stay on campus for various reasons-some of which constitute general weirdness. Definitely could have used Cougs, Kelley, Cully and Fuller McC's first couple of F Mac seasons. Tucker had some skills and a nice looking shot but apparently couldn't stay out of the bars. A lot misfits and malcontents.

Look at it like this. Andrew Brommer made Cougs look like Wes Unseld.

That first FMac team was awful, almost any healthy bodies would have helped. To go from that collection to the talent on the NIT final was an amazing roster turnaround.

Jake Kelly was really the only player Iowa truly missed and he had already transferred out before Lick’s last season. Cully Payne was on Fran’s first team and put up some awful numbers in his very limited time. Cartwright was ten times the player Payne was. Fuller would have been nice to have as a backup, but Basabe was twice the player Fuller was, even as a Freshman. Cougill would have never survived a game in Fran’s system. That much should be obvious.

Any Iowa team could use a Jake Kelly.

I see a lot of Kelly in CJ Fredrick. Fredrick is already better, but there are some similarities. The kind of player Iowa has been missing and who you hoped Oglesby and Ellingson were.

I think Cully left the team after like 5-7 games. No depth at guard.

Mel was a better player than Cougs to be sure. Cougs would have played some minutes, due to size alone-the Iowa team had none. Indeed, what ever minutes Brommer played would have been better played by Cougs.

You realize we're talking about varying degrees of mediocrity on a couple of pretty untalented teams, right? The only three guys Lick recruited that would get playing time on even this depleted Iowa team would be Matt G, of course, E May and RDM. Mel and Z Mac might get a few minutes here and there. None of those guys would start.

Basabe would start on this depleted team. Basabe would likely be the starter at the beginning of the season before the injuries. Basabe would definitely be a player on this team beyond getting a few minutes here or there. McCabe would probably see Pemsl type minutes or maybe a little more. Also, Cartwright would start over Toussaint and/or Evelyn.

No depth at guard, but Payne had four guards better than him even on that untalented roster. (Cartwright, Marble, May, and Gatens). Cougill was more talented than Brommer for sure and probably Archie as well. Cougill in Fran’s system would be worse than both. It can work both ways.

Basabe would play significant minutes.
