You aren't a very good student of history. How many VP's have been elected POTUS after losing a second term? Pence has never been popular. He definitely won't get any Trump supporter votes. Pence won't get any major funding.
Everybody but me thought that Walker would get destroyed. He turned out to be a very formidable candidate.
If Trump is out of the picture. A big if still. The race is wide open. We could see twenty plus candidates running. If that's the case just having ten percent of that vote will make Pence very competitive heading into the primaries. Given his name, title, and evangelical support ten percent is very doable for him.

Trump is a dummy. It's why he rages against intellectuals and smart people. With Trump it's always a projection. He also probably has undiagnosed learning disorders, and dyslexia.

Democrat here and I think electing a moderate Republican POTUS 24 would be one of the most wonderful things to happen. We need a functioning Republican Party that could show the lunatic base you can still win without conspiracy or owning the libs and maybe force Democrats to pick some younger candidates.

I would be thrilled with a normal, healthy, reality acknowledging Republican party. Hard to see a path there as soon as 24, but perhaps soon after if they stick with MAGA/Q/crazy and it doesn't go well.
This would require a moderate Republican party.
Which simply is not where they are now, nor have been for the past decade. They no longer support most of the conservative principles of actual conservatism: they're fully onboard with racism, fascism, authoritarianism and bigotry. Those are the folks running that party, and a moderate conservative has no chance in hell of winning any major party nomination for anything.
That would absolutely cost him any chance at a GOP presidential nomination.
