*****W Virginia vs Iowa (W) Game Thread*****

Wow… 100% can’t agree with this. In fact, my son, and I remarked that quite frankly, they weren’t particularly quicker than us.

And for all intents and purposes, they should’ve been. They had a 56 guard, a 58 guard, a 59 guard and two others under 6 foot.

I can assure you we didn’t get out athleted in that game or we wouldn’t have won.
The only reason Iowa won this game is because they out scored WV 25-3 at the free throw line. WV made more 2's and more 3's. Iowa struggled on the offensive end because they couldn't get open and they stood on offense. Typically teams stand around because they cannot get open.

I’m going to add… they are a defensive team and not a prolific offensive team as we know. However, they scored less than 60 points, only four times this year.

They shot on average 45% from the field, tonight 34%.

We played sensational defense. I/e: we found a way to win. I mean think about this. We scored 64 and won by 10.😳

We won because we out rebounded them by seven, and we held them to their third lowest scoring output of the whole entire year. If they were way quicker than us that wouldn’t of happened.

We don’t have an athlete/quickness issue. go look at their box scores. They’ve played a shit ton of “athletic teams” and held them in the 60s….

Great defense is about a lot more than quickness. It’s why there’s no excuse for our men’s team to not play better defense.!

Either Iowa will play a lot better on Saturday or that will be their final game this season. Iowa is overdue for a strong game, thought it’s hard to say if they’re worn out from being under the proverbial microscope all year.

Why does Iowa play a lot of zone and junk defenses then?

I wonder when the last time Iowa won a game shooting 36% or worse.

5-22 (23%) from 3
12-25 (48%) from 2
.................................
17-47 (36%) Overall

Iowa outscored WVU 25-3 from the FT line (Iowa shot 25-30; WVU was 3-5)

Because we aren’t a great defensive man to man team, but man did we D them up tonight. I was shocked. Hell you might say we won because if it.

We held them to 34% shooting.

I mean dude, they played Baylor, Texas & K-st and the most pts scored were 73 by K-st once, then 65. Texas scored 70, Baylor 66 & 65….

All athletic high end teams…quickness was not an issue. Are you aware of how many open three-pointers we missed or even layups?

That’s a function of their physicality, not their quickness.

Yes, every close game or loss isn’t on the coach. CC had 3 assists. And let me tell you something it should’ve been 10 we missed 7, 8 maybe 10 wide, open three-pointers, and countless layups off her passes….

But I’m not gonna blame them because that’s the same team that absolutely kicked the shit out of West Virginia on defense and rebounding… This was a good game. I’m pleased!! Sometimes you have to find different ways to win and we did that.

They shot 34% from the field and had 35 rebounds to our 42.

Guys, we had seven assists, seven that’s it… Give them credit they took us out of our offensive formula. We really did not play well at all and we won by 10.

That’s a big damn deal !!!
kirk ball produces wins. period. :)

Iowa better study that game more than anyone else they play, because they need to figure some things out.
Iowa was far too passive on offense. When a team wants to press you and get right up in your face on the perimeter, you have to make them pay. Iowa being so tentative with the ball played right into West Virginia’s hands. Affolter’s late and-1 was a textbook example of how you punish an overly aggressive defense. Iowa needs more of that going forward.

Also, I get that Caitlin Clark is Caitlin Clark and she deserves the right to play hero ball sometimes, but she needs to trust her teammates and get shots in the flow of the offense too. When Iowa had scoring droughts tonight, Clark seemed to abandon the offense too readily in favor of trying to do everything herself.

However, the fouls on WV were all legit, as they play a rough, reaching in game. Unless, of course, you are a typical iswho fan, who thinks Iowa was just handed the game by the refs. 😉 If you are an iswho fan…how about that Stanford team!!!!

Mostly I agree, however she took 22 shots, her average. And we missed bare minimum five wide open threes off passes by her. At least five. We also missed several layups some uncontested off of passes by her….

Yet she still kept passing them the ball. She didn’t jack up any wild 35 foot three pointers down the stretch like she often times likes to do in close ball games.

I honestly thought she played the most composed. She has been in a tight battle for sometime.

You realize we played a bunch of triangle and 2, right?

Lolol, you mean ONLY when they spent the whole game laying bricks? Gabby couldn't throw it in the ocean, and Kate and Hannah missed about a dozen layups. Kate passed up a couple of WIDE open threes and drove into traffic and turned it over. Was not a great night for any of the "supporting players" except Syd vicious......

Classic foul the sh!t out of a team and dare the refs to call them. As stated, the whole damn WV team could have fouled out.
Not the greatest performance tonight offensively, but they locked down on D and forced WVU into alot of perimeter play. Not their strong suit.
This time of the year it doesn't matter how you get it done. Survive and advance.
Iowa plays with a target on their back and teams are just itching to take down the GOAT. Need to be prepared for this going forward. It won't get any easier.
One final note on the Stuelke haters...I thought outside of missing a few bunnies she was tough as hell tonight. She was in with the trees on the glass and had some big rebounds and battled under the hoop all night. Not an easy assignment with all the mugging going on down there tonight.

You could tell from the opening tip that West Virgina was going to bump and bang the crap out of Iowa. It was crazy the amount of fouling THAT WASN'T CALLED ON WV.
