WBB 2017-18 Season

Adversity may have drawn the team together initially, plus playing with a shorter bench gave the remaining players more time to develop both individually and as a cohesive team. But now this is getting ridiculous. If you project the player loss through the season, they could end up like the Alabama men’s team that finished against Minny with only theee players. Since Gustafson is often triple teamed, maybe it would still be fair.

The problem isn't that the girls left the program. The problem is that Lisa refuses to use her allotment of scholarships. Now it's a problem and it has been before as they seem to always have injuries each season.

If women's basketball aren't going to use their allotted # of scholarships the NCAA should give baseball a couple more scholarships. It's obvious w basketball doesn't need them and women's basketball is not a revenue sport

We dressed nine tonight and the first half used eight. Those not dressed?
Davis and Meyer (injured)
Buttenham (left team-concussion risk
Cera (transfered)
Houston (left school)
That makes 14 players expected of 15 scholarships allowed.

Vs. Wisconsin Thursday:
Ollinger started tonight’s game. Mohns and Sanders have seen first half time. Eight of nine dressed players have seen first half action. Iowa leads 30-14 at halftime. Sevillian 11 points. Gustafson 8 points, 7 rebounds.

Conn, one of those girls (Sanders) isn't on scholarship. That would leave 2 scholarships un filled. Lisa could use 2 more players, especially guards.

That is true. But it’s not like Bluder went into the preseason with a bare, er sparse cupboard.

Count it as a success when you can look that bad and get a W. More turnovers than field goals is usually not a recipe for victory.

We started the season with 9 scholarship players. The only other one that wasn’t known about last spring was Houston. So it was a sparse cupboard. Cera didn’t tell them in August and they knew about Christina too. It’s the Bluder way to go with a thin roster and it’s going to be a big problem, especially if Mac has a broken wrist as the Wisconsin broadcaster was saying.

Also if your point and rebound totals are within ten, it’s usually a 50 point blowout or a loss.

The team had the players in place, but Cera surprised both the coaches & team with her decision to transfer in late May before summer workouts. Jinaya quits a week or so prior to practice so both of the situations were unforeseen & they couldn't really react to them with the timing. Adding Zion Sanders was about all they could do unless a grad transfer or junior college recruit became available.

They have plenty of guards coming in the next few years but now really need quality posts otherwise they'll be short there.

Yikes. Not a pretty game, but short handed and on the road a W is a W. Megan looked frustrated and at times discombobulated, bit still finished with 21 and 16. Lexi with some big threes early. I've said this before but Lexi has really been a nice surprise. The offense looked stagnant and everyone looked like they were waiting for someone else to step up. Hopefully the Hawks can regroup over the weekend and come out strong against Michigan.

Aren’t all three recruits next year over 6 feet?

The guards Tomi Taiwo & Kate Martin are 5'9 / 5'11 - Logan Cook is 6'1 but a finesse player - Monika Czinano at 6'2-6'3 is the post recruit. The rest of the verbals they have are all guards.

Taiwo is 5-10, Martin is 6-0, Cook 6-1, Czinano 6-3.
After Houston left, they had 10 scholarship players and a walk-on.
Now 9 suited. Which would be fine, if the two missing weren't two of your best.
21 turnovers tonight. The defense was solid. Chase shot well. Alexis had all her points in the first 12 minutes. Only 5 points over the last 6 minutes. But it's a W.

On Wednesday, at the end of practice, Meyer suffered a fourth metacarpal fracture in her left hand. So not the wrist.

She had 6 by halftime, and that just has to change. She's been starting for almost a season and a half...
Doyle has always turned the ball over a lot with really sloppy passes, but last night set a new record! If they want to get to the NCAA Doyle better cut down her turnovers drastically. She also does not know when to slow down and set up the offense when struggling (same with JBO mens). Critical for a point guard IMO.

We had a lot of success early pushing the ball, so I'm sure that what Doyle is still trying to do. I think we can still get some easy baskets this way, but just need to be a little smarter. Some of the turnovers are to teammates who just left the spot. I think that has a lot to do with injuries and different players in different spots. Logic had too many turnovers too her sophomore year. Doyle will figure it out.

Carly Mohns!! 25 minutes, 9 points, 6 rebounds, played the point on the triangle-and-two.
Hope her health holds up because she played great today. MG and KD had the points but Carly had the best floor game (very high BBall IQ).

All played well today. kD and MG stood out but others did well too. Shooting off in first half but they were almost perfect in last few minutes. No missed FTs in final two minute when Mich was fouling

What an amazing effort by the Hawks! Playing #19 Michigan, down two starters.
Carly finally got to show what she can do. They just did a walk through on playing the perimeter a day ago and turned her loose. Shot the ball well, played great defense, rebounded, got a huge steal on Flaherty , tipped passes, etc. She even knocked down a 3!
Megan had 6 points at half, 21 in the second. 11 rebounds. She had two players on her all the time. 22-22 now in B1G play from the FT line.B1G player of the week? Try of the year.
Kathleen came alive offensively , 9 assists only 4 TOs.
They really made Flaherty work for her points. Only 4-12 from 3 after hitting 10 in their first game. Happy New Year!
Now go get Maryland!

Carly is listed as a RS Jr in an earlier press guidebut Lisa mentioned her as a senior post game. Because of her health, is she probably not coming back? Today: POG.

What a fun game. Carly stepped up huge and Kathleen had an amazing game. Chase with some big baskets and Megan was her consistent self. Some nice defense from Lexi.

14-1!! Go Hawks

She is graduating and due to her knees calling it a career. Great game today!

Why do several of the girls insist on wearing their shorts so they look like they're wearing diapers?

Looks very strange and not in a good way. You would think the coaches would make them wear their uniforms the way everybody else does.

I have always believed that Carly had the potential to have some really good games like this. In fact, with this opportunity, it seems possible to me that she could have even greater games yet to come. I hope so.

Oak....it was an amazing effort by the Hawks. Dang do I love watching this team play basketball. Shorthanded and all and this team plays with such grit, determination and with a fierce attitude too.....Norm Van Lier would be extremely proud of the way these girls play the game and it's a huge reason they are 14-1.....

Now if we can just get the men to play with that same attitude, they will have the same success....they are starting to and realize what happens (WINS) when you play hard on both ends of the court but need more of that attitude play like K Doyle, Megan. Alexis, Hannah and great to see Carly's play last night too..

Is too bad we've had the injuries. They're playing really well, don't get me wrong. If we had Tania and Mac we beat the girls from the mitten state by 20.
I fear our lack of depth will catch up with us and we'll drop a few games with shouldn't.
