WBB 2017-18 Season

Samford beat a good UCF team last night. Won't be as easy as I was hoping. I'm a little concerned about a let down after FSU.
Not worried about a letdown with this team at all, if anything the loss will motivate them. Tania tweeted this after the loss...
"1 thing I hate more than anything is coming up short. But trust me when I tell you we will bounce back. #agnb"

Sunday at 2 pm. Against Samford (alabama) .Samford only lost by 15 to Florida State, at FSU.
Samford University is Alabama's top-ranked private university. Located in suburban Birmingham
Samford lost by 25 at FSU, 87-62. We shall soon see how Iowa does against them. I am confident that lowa will not have a letdown.

Iowa pulled away in the 2nd half to win 80-59 in a game of tackle basketball. Megan got a double-double, 18 and 11. Hannah Stewart set a new career high with 17. Kathleen added 14.
The Hawks lead the nation in assists. They had 26 again today.

For Davis to refer to "coming up short" is a classic Freudian comment! However, you gotta love point guards that hate to lose. Gustafson's fist pumping and Doyle's general demeanor indicates the attitude might be prevelant on this team!

Are we even that surprised at this point?? @IowaWBB's "Walking Double-Double" Megan Gustafson named @B1Gwbball Player of the Week. Averaged 26 PTS, 10 REB this week. Top ten nationally in PTS & REB #Hawkeyes pic.twitter.com/lKg2M2BjRV

Not being even remotely local, I paid the $6.95 to watch the game on cyclones.tv. W.o.w., these guys calling the games are total HOMERS! I can’t stand it! I also subscribe to the B10 package, and the guys calling the Iowa games aren’t even close. Homer doesn’t even come into my vocabulary with those two guys.

Iowa needs to stop their unforced turnovers. Amazing Megan hasn’t even attempted a shot.

The ISU announcers are definitely setting broadcasting back many moons... The analyst has no idea about Gustafson, its taking 2-3 defenders on her all the time to keep the ball away from her. Hopefully we can get some more movement in the second half to free up the inside game a little more.

Exactly - that’s why Chase has had her shots instead of Megan.

And we just got a basket and one - and the announcers want to call traveling, awful call, etc.

It appears all three other in state teams are down this year. Drake is 5 and 4, and Northern Iowa is 2 and 6. I'm a little surprised.

I'm really surprised about UNI, not sure what they had coming back, but Warren had them on the uptick.

UNI's been missing one of their returning starters. I think Drake will be pretty tough by mid-season, lots of young talent. Better than UNI's IMHO.

Hawks win a "reward" game. 85-45. After a challenging schedule so far they get an easy one to lead into finals.
Megan got her double-double in 23 minutes, 19 points and 10 rebounds.Nobody played more than 25 minutes, everybody scored.
Hawks now 10-1 leading into the last two instate rivalry games.

Can you explain to me why Jesse Dickerson called a double foul after Kathleen Doyle got elbowed in the jaw by an opposing player? He couldn't have missed it when everyone else in Carver saw it. Did he want to restore order after Arkansas Pine Bluff got chippy? Not the way to do it.

The opposing player just got through throwing another elbow. Not sure why Kathleen got called. Mercy rules, I guess. Kathleen also got poked in the eye and knocked to the floor. Pine Bluff got chippy after Iowa's defense shut them down. They also were undercutting on rebounds. The officials couldn't bring themselves to call it.

Probably a game that shouldn't have been scheduled in the first place, and shouldn't be again.

I agree. Coach Bluder is generally very smart about scheduling, avoiding teams in the RPI upper reaches (this one was #298). Our RPI dropped from #15 to #25 even with the win. I suppose she wanted one game where she could get an extended look at everyone.

I think the one good thing the game did was give Lisa a chance to hammer to her team that you have to play all 40 minutes with the same energy. Every timeout she was just as animated in the huddle no matter the score. This team still needs to learn to go hard after every rebound, even the ones where you think you are the only player around (which Florida State took complete advantage of). And they have to stop with the sloppy turnovers. Both things still happened yesterday, which will be the difference between being a middle-of-the-pack team and a great team in the Big Ten.

It was a good game at the right time, coming three days after what is always a high-pressure game and the Saturday before finals. Let-down / lack of focus would be an issue on Saturday no matter who was on the schedule. Best the game be against a +250 RPI team.

After being #28 in the AP and #27 in the USA polls last week, the Hawks are now #25 in the new AP. Should climb into the top 25 for USA too, I imagine.
As a caution, last year in a similar spot they came back from finals week and dropped games to Drake, Illinois, and Penn State. They need to come back charging hard.

Coach Bluder may have given UNI some bulletin board material on her post game show, saying something along the lines of "...we're going to go up there to prove that it should have been us to go to the NCAA tournament last spring and not them...".

She may have been talking about the score of last years game.

Iowa beat both ISU and UNI handily last season. They got in, Iowa didn't.
Thus the motivation for the Hawks.
Iowa also #25 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

I think that would be an odd thing for Coach Bluder to say (if that is what she said). Beating UNI this Sunday really won’t prove that claim. Beating them (and ISU too) last year [decisively] in IC lends greater credence to that assertion. For the record, I (like Lisa) am an UNI alum and I believe Iowa is the better team and have little doubt that Iowa will prevail. I am also confident they will beat Drake to conclude their non-conference schedule with a record of 12-1.

I heard it with my own ears on the post game interview. UNI's kids worked hard to earn an at-large, with some decent non-con wins (K-State and Creighton) and a good conference season. Iowa's fate was in it's own hands; a few less turnovers and a few more rebounds would have lead to a couple more conference wins and likely an NCAA birth. Lisa's comments, though no doubt unintentional, made it sound as though she believed UNI had somehow taken Iowa's slot.

That said UNI is simply out-sized and out-talented by Iowa, and the McLeod Center has been Hawk-friendly for WBB.

The difference last year was when Tania got hurt. I really believe they would have won that game and maybe one or two others. Who knows but one game probably would have changed the selection.

Dunno, turnovers were an issue before Tania's injury, and I attribute rebounding problems in part to last years 4 guard lineup. Another problem was putting 4 good quarters together against teams not named Maryland or OSU, I'd agree that her absence had some effect there.

I don't mean to sound too grumbly, we've been playing very good, consistent b-ball. If we can keep it up, March should be a lot of fun.

Success for this team will come if they play good defense and rebound the ball. Last year they were horrible on defense and did not rebound well. This team seems to be playing less zone and more man defense. Man defense could get exploited in big ten play. Tough match-ups for Iowa against big athletic guards and athletic 3's with size. Turnovers are concerning but it appears this team can score the ball. I think Iowa's fate will be determined on defensive end.

Tania Davis went down with a knee injury in first half vs UNI. Hope the best for the young lady, she has returned to the bench.

It was her “good” knee she tweeked. Gave a thumbs up when she walked back out on the court.
