WBB 2017-18 Season

Coach Jensen just said they don't know the extent of the injury, will get it looked at back in IC.

"We don't think it is anything serious, but we'll re-evaluate it when we get to Iowa City," Bluder said. "We had bad visions going through our minds when that happened."

Bluder's quote in the recap of the UNI game. Hoping Tania is back quickly. This year's team is fun to watch and playing well. We can't afford injuries.

Iced it down and walked back to the bench. Hopefully nothing serious. They have until Thursday.

Gosh dang. Huge loss for the Hawks

It is time to find another Kari Knopf. Doyle, Meyer and Sevillian are going to have to be iron women now, as there are no scholarship guards on the bench.

They do have a few other options still. Ollinger is a forward but at least has some ball handling skills. Zion Sanders is a walk-on guard, but maybe she has had enough practice time learning the system now to contribute. Or maybe Lisa will have to play Gustafson, Stewart and Coley together and rotate one of the guards out for a breather.

This team can still achieve all their goals, but there is no margin for error now and foul trouble will be a big issue. And let's hope for the best for Tania's future now too.

Edit: For most who probably don't remember, about 20 years ago the Iowa women had a slew of injuries so got an All-American on the Hawkeye softball team to walk on for one year to the basketball team. She had been All-State in high school in everything at Dowling and obviously a great athlete. Maybe there is another Kari Knopf somewhere in the student body though I doubt it.

Absolutely

Zion was a HS all-star in an Indiana class that was stacked with talent. I think she could spell the others for a few minutes. Amanda can handle the ball, but is a bit out of control and rushed at times. Doyle, Meyer, and Sevillian are all pretty sturdy and should handle more minutes.

I doubt it would happen but

Technically is Jinaya Houston eligible to transfer in without sitting out, since the last I heard(if true) she was going to a JC. Of course I doubt that would ever happen.

No, I don't think that would happen either. We have added walk-on's mid-season in the past for practice depth, that would be more likely.

There was in a glitch in the system. They sent me the top secret password: Hawkeyes.

Just back from Carver. Megan 27 and 12 despite being pounded on.
Mak 21 and 7 assits, Lexi also with double figures with 12. Kath with 8
So 68 of 79 from them.
Kind of a sloppy game. When Iowa got up by 20 the refs put the whistles away and it turned into hockey, with body checks and tackles.

I watched it on BTN2GO (being the resident Maryland viewer), and it was easy to see the transition from basketball to hockey. I’m just glad no one got hurt as rough as the game got as it went on - seriously, we can’t afford to lose another player from this team. They still have great chemistry and shooters even with the loss of Tania.
I hated to see Megan being pounded on; it looked like she even got a forearm shot in the head/throat/upper shoulders area on what was supposed to be an inbounds or similar type play. The Drake players were very aggressive.
I am glad Iowa was able to assert themselves and win this game handily.

Soooo.. it wasn’t just me. Hope this was temporary.

Refs let too much go early, and had trouble getting it back. More fast collisions than should happen. A bit scary, especially when Kathleen went down for a brief instant. With only 2-3 off the bench, any potential injury is scary.

I know they have big-time reputations, but you can keep Lisa Mattingly and Amy Bonner. There should have been multiple flagrant fouls called. Not my favorite refs.

Agree the officials let the game get away from them so Drake just kept getting rougher. Wouldn't be surprised if Lisa let Jennie know what she thought of it either.

There was a point of emphasis a few years ago about cleaning up post play. You are supposed to only use one arm in a barred form on defense. If anything, it is now worse. Megan had two people shoving on her with both arms, leaning over her shoulder, hip checking her, and clawing her with no call. When the officials let all the rough stuff go, it ruins the game. No flow, drives to the hoop being hammered, shots being stopped with hands all over the arms. Really takes the enjoyment out of the game. And then somebody gets hurt.

That's how Drake plays under JB, because that kind of play is usually rewarded in the current officiating environment. If you have access to the WatchESPN app on a phone/tablet/Roku/etc. they're on a lot due to the MVC's TV deal. When Drake plays it's like bowling - they are the bowling balls and the other players are the pins. To be fair, they also have good players, Wendle and Ingle from last years team could play for almost anyone, and Hittner had 27 for them last night.

And it's not just Drake, many if not most teams are coached to play aggressively right up to the limit of what a given game's officiating crew seems to allow. Sometimes I think coaches are more worried about losing players to foul calls than injuries.

A couple of flies in the ointment - we got out-rebounded and had 18 turnovers, two common problems during the last B10 season.

Yes, it seems the 'points of emphasis' seem to fade away after several weeks each season, for both WBB and MBB. When we had Megan Skouby and were trying to run a triangle offense through her, she got the hell beaten out of her by pretty much everyone in the conference.

This regarding TOs and offensive rebounds. They better get that under control or it will be a long Big 10 season. Lack of effort and sloppy passes.

Last night, and to an extent in the UNI game, they looked mentally tired. They would make a really bad pass, and then seem surprised that it didn't work. Slow reactions to those passes and to rebounds. A lot of rebounds taken waist high, no jump to the effort. They also seemed flat footed on the rebounds , looking at the ball but no immediate action taken to run to it.
Maybe they were drained after finals, or maybe not getting the rest needed with the free time.

”Multiple flagrant fouls”? No, there were no flagrant fouls, because you see a lot of those in the women’s game. The refs, nowadays, go the monitor/replays for practically everything. Sometimes the play does get rough and it is the refs job to clean it up. But, “multiple flagrant fouls”, easy there.

Nice article, think he's greatly underestimated Michigan State however as they have been putting it together as of late. Minnesota has very good guards but have played a cupcake schedule (#211) so far, will be interesting to see if they are for real. With Tania, this team could have pushed for 2nd as Maryland isn't nearly as strong as in the past & Michigan is beatable too, especially since they come to Carver.

Hope bench players can find some confidence through extended playing time, and Meyer can come back with her 3-point shooting unaffected.

Looks like a “hard luck” senario is unfolding. A small nucleus of players is going to have to carry the season- a significant contrast to a year ago! Good things can still happen if MM can get back in a couple weeks... taking care of business this weekend is very important. This team is going to have to “want it more” then several of their opponents to meet what I expect to be their own expectations.

Mak was playing so well. Averaged over 15 ppg in the rivalry games. Leading the team in assists. Hoping she will be able to play while she heals.
Everyone will need to step up.

IIRC, both Kenny Arnold and Bob Hansen played with broken hands during the 79-80 season, so it can be done. But Meyer had been playing so well, I was starting to wonder if it will turn out she's the best of last years extraordinary freshman class. She's certainly held her own, to say the least.
