WBB Transfer Portal Targets 2025-2026

She'll end up at LSU, and then get overshadowed by all the better players on that roster and ultimately find a way to blame it on Iowa. Lol.

Seems like a very selfish and self-centered princess. Perfect for LSU.
She does seem like a perfect fit for that LSU culture...."disrespect, disrespect".....

Ava is a 20-10 gal if she stays out of foul trouble. She can be a machine for us
I really wouldn't count out Mallegni if she just settles in. She can shoot the three and has the build to score going to the hoop and get to the line. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see her go anywhere from 8-14 points a game and 6 boards next season. Syds minutes open. Go get it Teagen....

Obviously whoever made the comment about the the Arizona WBB Coach has no knowledge of WBB. Adia Barnes took over a dumpster fire -- worst program in the Pac 12 at the time with barely any fans in the stands. In five years took an undersized team to the NCAA Championship game losing by 1 to Stanford, a team they had lost to earlier in the season by 27 points. The problem Arizona has is no NIL money -- Football and Men's BB gets it all and the athletic department was horribly financially mismanaged.

You could almost say the same for recently fired Fran McCannedery except for NATTY run. However, he's an A1 dipshit to me also. The way I see it is Adia is Fran in reverse. Ada hits on defense and not much of an offensive mind. Fran is the exact opposite with offense stressed while defensive is majorly slacking.

Thus, they both have basically 50/50 conference records over their P4 careers. That's what happens when only stress one half of the court.

Fran brought us back from a low and made the MBB relevant again. Adia did the same with UA to bring butts into the seats. I get it! However, that's not what I'm talking about. It's why we're talking about Jada now.

Since you made up you mind I know nothing about WBB, thought I'd bring this to the board's attention and neglected to share it.

"Barnes enters her ninth season as a head coach with a 150-100 record overall and a 68-73 record in the Pac-12, which has been one of the top conferences in women’s basketball throughout her tenure. She had a string of five straight seasons with at least 21 wins come to an end last year when the team went 18-16."
...
"On the downside, the Wildcats have suffered considerable attrition via the transfer portal over the past few years. In the early part of Barnes’ tenure, Arizona saw transfers out. However, they were generally looking for more playing time and went to smaller programs. After the UA program became more successful on the court, conflict off the court grew.

The issues started in 2021-22, the year after McDonald left for the WNBA. Barnes brought in three transfers. Two of them did not fit either on the court or off, and it stirred conflict. After Arizona lost to North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament, Barnes said that there would be changes to the roster before the following season. There were.

When the season was over, Koi Love transferred again—going to USC where she ended up playing little in 2022-23 before being dropped from the roster before the 2023-24 season. In addition to Love, Anna Gret Asi, Semaj Smith, Gisela Sanchez, Derin Erdogan, and Aaronette Vonleh all transferred. Taylor Chavez didn’t transfer, but she opted not to use her fifth year of eligibility. Although Barnes later said that Erdogan was a player she deeply regretted losing, at the time she said that most of the others who transferred were gone because she wanted them gone.

Of the group who transferred that year, only Vonleh and Erdogan had immediate success at their new schools. Vonleh was the only one who went to an equivalent program and prospered immediately.

Things didn’t get better in 2022-23. The Wildcats had issues in the locker room and a staff that didn’t please Barnes. She fired most of the coaching and support staff after the season, feeling that they were encouraging some of the drama and undermining her. She also felt the work ethic was not strong among several members and that she should have just fired some of them before the season instead of bringing in Bett Shelby in a mentorship role. She regretted not hiring Shelby as an on-court assistant immediately.

“When (Shelby) came in her first year, not as a coach, a lot of that was to teach Erin (Grant) and Ashley (Davis) how to recruit efficiently and do their jobs a little bit better,” Barnes said. “So I brought her in as more of a mentor. I saw that Ashley didn’t ever recruit at a high level, and I wanted her to learn that, but it didn’t really work like that when I did it. I think that because Bett was known as one of the best recruiters in the country, I think bringing her in caused a lot of insecurities and I think it caused a little bit of a power struggle. So that was not the brightest move. So that caused a little bit of internal conflict, and so that’s one reason I made the changes. But, at the end of the day, if we were doing our jobs at a level we were supposed to, there wouldn’t have been a need to bring Bett in.”

Of those who left the staff after the year, only McDonald left on good terms and by her own choosing. Barnes encouraged her to give international play another shot while she could, saying that the coach and the program would always be there when McDonald was ready to return to the coaching world.

Most of the staff was simply fired.

“Video coordinator, got rid of immediately,” Barnes said last February. “And then Erin, Ashley, got rid of. And then it was Director of Operations, got rid of. I couldn’t get rid of them fast enough.”

Barnes moved Shelby into an on-court coaching role, hired Anthony Turner, moved another staff member into a new role, and hired new people to fill the rest.

The group has stayed intact after the first year. She felt that she should have made most of those moves sooner and her decision not to do so cost her some players.

The program lost five transfers after the season. This time, it included starters or players who had a strong likelihood of starting in 2023-24.

In the end, she saw forward Lauren Ware, guard Paris Clark, guard Madi Conner, forward Lemyah Hylton, and guard Lauren Fields all transfer. Ware and Fields started and contributed on NCAA Tournament teams in 2023-24. Clark, Conner, and Hylton all went to teams that missed the NCAAs.

The turmoil didn’t stop there. Even before the fall practice started, Barnes had to dismiss transfer Fanta Gassama from the team. She wasn’t the last one who would leave—either by her own choice or the coaches’ choice.

The two freshmen who returned to the program after the 2022-23 season did not make it through their sophomore years. Conflict behind the scenes and on the court led to the departures of both Maya Nnaji and Kailyn Gilbert. Gilbert has since transferred to LSU.

The players who stuck together formed a strong bond, though. Arizona returned all four freshmen from last year’s No. 3 class. Barnes and her staff also added the No. 40 player from that class in South Carolina transfer Sahnya Jah. She has a talented young core who she thinks can lead the program to great things if they stick together.
...
One big question
Can the Wildcats get past the turmoil of the past three seasons and form a cohesive group that leads them into the future?

Arizona’s transfer situation was not unique. For the past few seasons, many programs have faced a churn of players due to the lack of rails on the transfer situation. The team ultimately lost four players to transfer or separation in 2023-24, but it seemed to perform better and be more cohesive on the floor after three of those players were no longer on the court.

Still, it’s difficult for a team to grow and get the most out its personnel if there are constant dramatic changes on the roster. In this day and age, it’s unlikely that many teams will keep all of their players every year. However, if the Wildcats are going to form a committed and effective unit, those changes need to slow down. More importantly, whatever has caused them behind the scenes needs to stop."

Fast forward a year. Let's see how that "talented young core who she thinks can lead the program to great things if they stick together." worked out.

"Forward Jorynn Ross became the fifth Arizona women’s basketball player to enter the transfer portal during the current cycle ...

Earlier in the week, three UA starters — center Breya Cunningham and guards Skylar Jones and Jada Williams — entered the portal. They represent three-fourths of the 2023 signing class that was supposed to form the foundation of a championship contender under Adia Barnes.

Forward Katarina Knezevic also entered the portal following a promising freshman season.

Barnes is entering the last year of her current contract and faces yet another roster overhaul. UA athletic director Desireé Reed-Francois has yet to comment publicly on Barnes’ status as the 2025 offseason gets underway."

Does that sound like a healthy environment?

This year she went 10 - 8 and 19 - 14 overall in Big 12. She's probably lucky they moved to the Big 12 or else another mediocre year or worse in SEC or B1G.
March Madness had 12 B1G, 10 SEC, 8 ACC and 7 Big 12 teams. AZ not being one of them.

The writer of this article admits he did an interview with Adia and got a good deal of his insight from it. Like that's not going to be totally bias one way.

Obviously, this head coach isn't working with a full deck. She got overly cocky after her NATTY run in my book and it shows with her toxic wasteland with so many player exits almost every year since it.

I ceased reading two paragraphs in to this manifesto. Nevertheless, I’m grading it a B+

She now follows
Raina
Jan and
Iowa Wbb

Jan doesn’t follow her yet.. so she went out of her way to follow Jan opposed to hitting follow back on a follow request.
New follows by Williams
Abby
Feuerbach
Guyton
Levin
Kennise Johnson
She follows Deal.. not sure if that was new or already happened.

Almost every returning player and coach(Raina and Abby shared to their story) Commented and/or shared Jada Williams post on their IG story except Jan, Tania Davis, Mallegni, Gyamfi and Heiden. Stremlow commented but Jada doesn’t follow her yet.

Ediger commented, Deal commented, and Hays shared it to her IG story.

Our potential 2026 have a mixed bag of follows..

Lewis is following a bunch of older players since she’s been visiting for years just Levin among younger players. AIA together?
Guyton follows but Lewis doesn’t back.

Bjorn has been too but just follows Levin and Stremlow.

Harpring follows new(Stremlow and Levin) and older(Olsen, Stuelke, and Kylie) players.

Woliczko follows McCabe, Stremlow, and Levin.

Incoming recruits.
Everyone follows Deal except Lewis

Lewis and Bjorn follow Houston.. more local and visits together.

Woliczko follows Hays.. they took a visit together.

Iowa has a weird gap for 2026 recruits.. where they have 5 freshmen and 1 sophomore. Ava Jones having to retire and Kennise being injured means it’s just the freshmen that are the focal point for team building.

Heiden and Mallegni aren’t very active on social media. Heiden reposts a little bit that’s it.

Levin and Stremlow are the heavy player recruiters.. Along with Deal.

Houston isn’t active.. Hays posts a decent amount but being in Alaska doesn’t have the relationships yet..

Point being this seems like a full fledged player recruiting barrage on Williams! Since you add in the 4 seniors that she’ll play with. Will it pay off??

I asked AI to sum it up:

Here's a summary of the main points:

Adia Barnes, head coach of Arizona women's basketball, has had a mixed record over her nine seasons, with a 150-100 overall record and 68-73 in the Pac-12. While she brought success and increased attendance, her teams have struggled with defense, similar to how Fran McCannedery's teams focused on offense but neglected defense, leading to 50/50 conference records for both coaches.

Barnes' program has faced significant player turnover through the transfer portal in recent years, with conflicts both on and off the court. She fired most of her coaching and support staff after the 2022-23 season, believing they were encouraging drama and undermining her. Despite these changes and the addition of a talented young core, five more players, including three starters from the 2023 signing class, have entered the transfer portal in the current cycle.

The team's performance in the most recent season was 19-14 overall and 10-8 in the Big 12, missing out on March Madness, where the Big 12 had 7 teams selected compared to 12 from the Big Ten and 10 from the SEC. The writer suggests that Barnes may have become overconfident after her NATTY run and that her program has become a "toxic wasteland" due to the high player turnover.

The writer, who admits to having insight from an interview with Barnes, believes she lacks a full deck and prioritizes excellence over mediocrity. They also compare her unfavorably to Fran McCannedery, calling both coaches "dipshits" and asserting that their criticism is not due to a lack of knowledge about women's basketball.

If Jan and her staff want a PG, then I'm all in on that. I wouldn't be disappointed with our PGs of Guyton, Deal and Stremlow running the offense with possible help from Levin and Johnson. I realize Johnson didn't do anything in 23-24 before her injury and Levin hasn't played much, but maybe one of them can improve and contribue. I realize Stremlow may not be a go to PG, but she can play and she has that something about her. I would like to see one or two 3/4s that can hit the three and can get to the basket. I realize I'm in the minority regarding the PGs, but whatever.

She’s clearly a D1 player. Jan played her more than she did most of the other Freshmen down the stretch. She clearly struggled late in game decisions and such. But to say she’s not a D1 player is ridiculous.
It’s almost as if she was auditioning for other people

Jada Williams follows
Jan, Raina, Abby, and Tania Davis.
Don’t have knowledge of an IG account for Randi Peterson and Sean Sullivan is private.

She follows every returning player except
Stremlow, Gyamfi, Mallegni, and Heiden.

Plus AJ Ediger and Addie Deal

All players and coaches that she follows also follow her back except Jan.

Gyamfi, Stremlow, and Mallegni follow her, but she doesn’t follow back yet.

Ediger follows now.. plus Layla Hays gave her a follow.

So 11-13 of next years roster follow her. Only Houston and Heiden don’t yet. Plus 3-4 coaches.

She follows 7-13(no connection to Hays or Houston yet) so 6-10 that are on campus.
Plus 4-4 on coaches.

Not sure what that really means. Her first visit since she entered the portal. She may start following other players from other teams, once she takes other visits.

First, you're correct that she may do that as well on other visits.

Second, it would signal an offer was extended. Why would IA teammates waste so much time if no offer was extended to her.

Third, she could be gauging how well she would be accepted. These social media savvy women know how to use it to their advantage. She has close to 90k likes already and it's only been 2.5 days. She has nine photos on her page (next highest is 25.5k). There's ~55 to 1 ratio of likes to comments. Even if all the comments are bad, which they're not, the likes dwarf them. Hell, some of those pics are fashion in nature and we're 4.5x+ those likes. She's an influencer with ~621k followers on IG alone. It's why she had so many Corp NIL deals aleady like Spalding. In my book, so far, that's called WINNING!

In the end, will it help us? Don't know. However, this sure in the hell can't hurt us with follows and likes!

I know you and many on here don't want to hear this, but we live in a different world under NIL. These savvy women could use it as their world after basketball is over. Meaning influencing others may be their career forever after college if they don't make the WNBA also. Picking a fan base that responds to her post could be an additional bonus to her NIL bag during college and after. This is what these young kids know and why our fan base is so active on social media.

Let me give you some other examples:
"I truly get what you're saying, but there is a line there. So for example, when Ava Heiden committed, she remarked on social media about how she felt welcomed and overwhelmed by all of her new follows and positive comments from Hawk fans."

This is from a UCLA forum:
"Iowa fans are every where though lol. They were all over Betts when she entered up until she committed. No hate to them, I think they have a top notch fan base but seriously, they are every where on every post or tweet when it comes to elite recruits posting stuff. lol."

I did a post about the GA Tech fan who was jealous of our fan support and was telling a GA Tech forum to up their game to compete with our fans here:

This is what WINNING looks like from our end. This is how we can become influencers as well.

High energy, quick, team first, defensive specialist with good ball handling skills but modest shooting/scoring skills —- is that the composite player profile for Jada Williams?

Seems about right. She takes charges like Kylie. I've seen her listed as PG, SG and CG.

She might have an additional attribute as well against a highly rated team.

Article Title: Jada Williams' monster 4th quarter keys Arizona to 68-61 upset of No. 3 Stanford

"She did just that, scoring 14 of her 23 points in the last four minutes of the game to lead the Wildcats in upsetting the No. 3 Cardinal, 68-61, Friday night at Stanford."

"Williams, who tied a career-high in scoring (she also had 23 points against Oregon on Jan. 14) took some time to warm up on the offensive end."

"At one point in those waning minutes — in the midst of Williams knocking down three 3-pointers, one 2-pointer and 3-of-4 free throw attempts, all in the game's final 3:18 — Williams got slammed to the ground by Stanford’s Talana Lepolo. It took a moment for Williams to get up and walk it off; yet, naturally, when play started again, she knocked down another shot."

“She’s a dog; she’s tough; she has heart,” Barnes said. “Even when she's not shooting the ball well she’s propelling our team and helping us win. Then she hit big shots when we need it.”

"Key moment
UA out scored Stanford 31-16 in the fourth quarter, but that final four minutes of the game that stands out. The Cardinal was up by nine points and Williams and company went to work. Martinez was fouled and knocked down both free throws. Williams picked a steal and knocks down a 3-pointer. She grabbed a defensive rebound and stepped back for another one from distance. Helena Pueyo chipped in yet another steal and passed to Courtney Blakely for the layup to tie it at 59-59. With just under two minutes left, Williams nailed a jumper to give UA a quick lead. After giving up a layup to Iriafen, Williams hit yet another 3-pointer giving UA a 64-61 lead with 30 seconds left. Williams made 3 of 4 free throws and Pueyo added one more for the seven-point win."

She's more of a 3 or stretch 4. Would love to have her. But at what point are we messing with team chemistry?

Yes getting a pg and 3-4 combo makes us nasty and fills all ? Marks this next year. I just don't want to see people leave because of playing time

I get this for sure, and I expect Jensen to be careful and conservative with her additions. She either gets a player or she doesn't, but there aren't really half-measures if they are looking to add a player.

Suspect Jan knows that already. This is why I like combo guards and stretch 3/4s. I can pitch it differently to where rotations and substitutions can work out with current players. If I target one exact position, then that can be threatening to a current player and then they wonder how they're going to get playing time. Anyways, suspect Jan has this down to an art form and why we don't lose many players.

Jan will try to add 2 more pieces out of the portal where we "don't have a lot of depth."

She says:
"My model will always be to try to develop but like we're graduating Syd at forward and we don't have a lot of depth at the one, right."

"I love our freshmen and I love the incomers and if we can just get a couple portal pieces I think could' be really fun."

She specifically targets a #1 (PG) and the other position inferred is Syd's position for graduating.
