What should be taken from this game.

Better defensive intensity goes a long way.

Attacking the basket tends to make a difference, as well, whether its finishing or drawing fouls.

Heat check bullsh** shots need to die in a f***ing sun-soaked lava pit.

Also, a win gets us one step closer to the tournament. Plain and simple.

Toussaint made one of the greatest plays of the game, diving into the bench to save a possession. I don't know what's going on, but it does seem Joe is evaluated on a much stricter scale than anyone else on the team. JBo hit those two early shots, but after that he reverted to his horrible shooting form this season. I do give him credit, though, for a great defensive effort. He, like the rest of the guys, really played hard on D in the second half.

But bottom line: Toussaint seems to be the scapegoat for Iowa's issues, and that's just not right. Joe has his flaws, just like most of the rest of the roster, but he always plays hard. I don't think Fran's treatment of Joe reflects well on the head coach at all.

Use the same standards to judge JBo, and he'd never set foot on the court. IMHO, of course.

Bohannon as a 6th year St I believe is shooting 25% from the field during Big Tem play. He was 2-7 today. Everyone is all fired up about his defense today against a team that’s only ahead of Nebraska. If we continue to give him those kind of minutes against even decent teams we have 6 years of hard evidence how he will do defensively. Kudos to the Hawks today.

Maybe Toussaint has been under the weather. I have never seen him wear a t-shirt under the jersey.

It was a good win. There's no such thing as a bad win (and no such thing as a good loss). Hawk fans should be happy.

I don't think you can conclude much about the specific combinations we used, seeing as how Minnesota isn't a particularly good team. Chances are, there are any of a dozen or so combos that would have been successful today.

Still, happy to get the win.

That said, I do feel bad for Toussaint, as I've mentioned in other threads.

Fire Fran. His love for JBo is inexcusable. Does he have blackmail on him? He wouldn't be starting pg at any division 2 school even at this point in his career. <30% shooting in conference play. It's a travesty, I feel bad for Toussaint. I hope he transfers to a team that cares about him

Joe T not starting is inexcusable. Sick or hurt in the second half? Did not play. That's troubling.
PMac had a hell of a game.
Keegan had a hell of a game as usual.
Sandfort showed flashes of brilliance on both ends of the floor. He's gonna be good.
Ulis struggled for awhile but pulled it together later in the second half.
Perkins did not have a good game at all in his first start. (Don't understand him starting)
Rebraca held his own inside on both ends.
Kris seemed a bit out of rhythm. I truly believe he should be starting and getting more consistent minutes to get into the flow of the game.
JBo at the point guard doesn't work. JBo starting over Joe T is ridiculous. JBo turned up his defense and play late in the second half. You cannot count on him to do that. He's not quick enough to play defense consistently and against better guards. His outside shot is not reliable anymore either. For the record, I like JBo, he's had a great career but the coaching staff is hurting our team by giving him so many minutes.

Sandfort deserves to play over connor who should be our 10th man in the rotation. He was not missed today.

enough already with jbo at pg. the jbo perkins starting lineup should end after 1 game. Need ulis or joet handling the point. Speaking of ulis did a good job of matching up with their bigger G Willis. We will need joet who played great first time against MD quick guards come Thursday.

we won again in spite of jbo playing
36 min. But we keep it up with him playing 2nd most minutes will prove costly again and bite us in the butt like psu on Monday or Rutgers before that.

Lastly without Keegan no doubt we are playing first day at big 10 tourney in the bottom 4.

Defense in the 2nd half. That as good as iowa has looked at that end consistently in a long time
Agreed. Switched on the ball screens except for whoever was guarding Minnesota's big. Iowa has the versatility to switch on all those other screens. Did a much better job of staying right on the guy's hip and making them shoot contested shots. And finishing the possession with rebounds.

In general, I like playing fewer guys as Taylor did tonight. Don't even really care which guys it is, just pick your best 7-8 and give them all of the PT.

Fran clearly wants Toussaint to transfer

The main reason I would have for giving JBo continued minutes is that to this point, he’s been the only guard from Perkins, Toussaint and Ulis who is never afraid to shoot, and offensively, perimeter shooting is the biggest weakness of the team. His defense is okay, and we have enough other defenders out there that we can get away with hit.

Toussaint? I have mixed feelings. Love his general effort and defense, quick as any Hawkeye in recent memory…but his offense hasn’t evolved at all in 3 years. I didn’t realize until I got home from the game that he didn’t play in the 2nd half. Aside from the one great effort play I thought he was largely invisible today.

I think Bohannon should play around 25 min/game unless his shot is falling.

There's more to offense than scoring. Check Joe T's assist numbers and his assist to turnover ratio. He brings much more to the offense than JBo much of the time.

If you need outside shooting, play Kris and Sandfort alongside Joe T more.

Joe plays outstanding defense as well. The best of any guard we have by far.

I have no idea why we continue to play JBo extended minutes. He's supposed to be a shooter/scorer and does neither very well this season. He's a great Hawkeye but he's not the JBo of old.

Those three don’t shoot because if they miss they get a short leash while others are allowed to make the same mistake time and time again.

Jbo was a placeholder in this game. He was there and if you replaced him with any number of guys the outcome would be the same or better.
Bohannon for 36 minutes is ridiculous. I believe he hits his first two shots and then 0-5. It’s now apparent how Fran works. He refuses to play his best players. Joe T. playing only 6 minutes is pathetic. It makes no difference where Jordan plays, he has lost his stroke. So JBO and Uhlis account for 14 of the 18 misses and Joe T. goes to the bench? Don’t penalize the team by not putting your best on the floor. At this point in the season, JBO needs to sit.

This. Bohannon shooting 25% from the field in league play and gets 36 minutes. Brilliant.
Don't get that either. Minutes must have been promised to JBO to entice him to come back for this year and with his poor performance so far this season, I can think of no other reason...
Joe T. is lightning in a bottle, but no one guards him like they do Jordan. Coaching staff must think that a potential 3 from Bohannan is more important then a possible steal from Joe.
Not liking the way Iowa doubles down leaving wide open looks for 3's. Jordan and Joe being too short can't recover fast enough to cover wide open shooters that are left open but of coarse the whole team is afflicted with leaving shooters wide open

First you can’t play Kris or Sandfort at the 2 in lieu of Jordan. They’re not guards.

Second, Ulis and Perkins are both pretty salty defenders as well, and seem to offer more offensively than Toussaint does. Ulis playing like he did today deserves more minutes.

I agree Jordan plays too many minutes, I think part of the reason he did today was because the Hawks had it going in the second half and I can’t really argue with playing the lineups that are clicking like they were at that point.

It becomes a vicious cycle. We want Perkins, Ulis and Toussaint to get more minutes, but they don’t play consistently enough on offense to warrant more time. They don’t show enough on offense, therefore they don’t get the minutes we want for them.

Toussaint does a good job at distributing the ball on offense, but he’s also zero threat to score consistently, and any player like that has a ceiling on their minutes. It’s the same argument for cutting Connors minutes, who also does a good job distributing the ball for his career.
