Looking at some of these smaller tournaments there are some good coaches.

Also the AAC is loaded with talented coaches, couldn’t Iowa get a coach from there? Or do we not pay enough?

Have you seen Fran's buyout?

I would start with some of the following names:

Marquette’s Steve Wojciechowski
Texas Tech’s Chris Beard
Nevada’s Eric Mussleman
Virginia Tech’s Buzz Williams

Also wouldn’t mind going after an up and coming mid major coach like TJ Otzelberger.

Iowa can afford to pay a good coach to come - $5 million is not unreasonable as a dept that will make over $150 million in revenue this year

No, thanks on Hoiberg, but a huge YES to the entire Drake staff. What those guys did this year was truly impressive. Now I hope the Bulldogs, despite two huge injuries, can win the MVC tourney and earn an NCAA opportunity so I'll have a team to cheer for . . . one that features former Hawkeye Brady Ellingson.

Really, if Fran decides to move on and resign on his own, would Iowa still be liable to pay his buy out?

Some of these suggestions are laughable.

Beard makes over $3M per year at TTU and has roots in Texas including being an assistant at Tech for 10 seasons.

Hoiberg is a pipe dream.

Muss, Wojo and Buzz aren't realistic either.

Tech is maxed out at Beard’s current salary - they’re paying a football buyout right now and are drowning in debt as an institution. Iowa makes double what Tech does in annual revenue and could easily step up and double his salary or more if we’re aggressive. Woj and Muss are in leagues with current revenues not even a tenth of Iowa’s in TV money. Besides, Iowa is not doing its job if they’re not pushing bottom feeder revenue schools deep into the red to keep a coach.

The only move that is not at best a lateral move is the Nevada to Iowa job.

You think Iowa is going to pay $6M plus per season for their next basketball coach? 3 coaches in the country make more than that...Coach K, Calapari and Holtmann.

why not put Izzo and Phil Jackson on your list?

High risk high reward. Except we dont have much left to risk.

After 20 years of basically nothing it's time to push in the chips. We have little left to lose.

We risk not making the tournament. It's easy to dog this team from the last 7 games or so (and with good purpose) but let's not just drop the rest of the season.

We rarely make the tournament.

I'm ok risking making it every 4 or 5 years for something potentially better.

The only way Iowa is going to get a high level coach is to get one early before they're proven.

Otherwise nobody is interested because of how hard the job apparantly is.

Think about the fact that Fran was able to recruit better guards to Sienna than to Iowa. That tells you how desirable this location is.

Maybe Frankie Mac might respond better to an AD who doesn’t completely suck (i.e. hold his coaches accountable).

Can we start up a GoFundMe account to axe Barta? He’s possibly the worst AD of any P5 program (though Pitt fans might disagree)

Now that I think about it, now I know why UI plays Pitt so much. It’s the one P5 program that makes us look good.

I think you're selling the program short. Iowa has a long history of basketball success, although it's getting more and more in the rear-view mirror. I don't buy the "nobody is interested" B.S. Just look at Fran - 9 year tenure with a new contract extension with huge buyout; and Iowa has made essentially no impact on college basketball during that time. Who wouldn't want that kind of long-term, high-paying, low-pressure gig?

I just think Iowa can do better and I am already seeing the daddy/son issue that drove Iowa fans nuts w/Lickliter.

I just think if Fran doesn’t get us to a sweet 16 by year 10, then it’s time to move on. He’s been suspended twice in his career both times involving officials. He’s a loose cannon/bully to the local media. And the fact is he flat out can’t recruit to Iowa.

I think the fans/students deserve more, especially if your paying him that much money. Get someone in here who can sell the program. Fran obviously can’t do it and neither can Barta. If it weren’t for Big Ten network $$, Barta would be canned.

Why do people think that coaches are banging down the door to come to Iowa or would jump at the chance?

Consensus says we have a lame AD, a very fickle fan base, a lackluster home atmosphere and a lightly regarded recruiting ground.

Sure, there's money to be had, so someone will take the chance. I just don't see it being on most bucket lists.

It would take someone really special to come here and to stay.

And Drake could not beat 15-17 UNI when it mattered most. Yes, let’s grab that coach and do big things.

They lost their three top players going into that game and a 4th got injured during the game. They literally had 6 guys to play most of the game.

I’d take Daren Devries any day of the week and twice on Sunday due to his coaching instead of whining and complaining about the officiating the entire game. Fran has worn out his welcome in IC. Sean Miller might become available!! LoL.

My post was more centered on who could Iowa get if there was a change? I’m not set on Devries, but sounds like a Iowa guy who has been in the coaching game for a long time.

Does Iowa pay enough to lure a coach away from the AAC, Mountain West, other conferences?

UNI is as horrible as they have been in years. The MVC is historically bad. Make all the excuses you want though.

Texas Tech is in the process of opening a state of art cutting edge basketball practice facility. Throwing money at coaches is not going to change the program much until Iowa administration makes a commitment to budget and facilities. Iowa can bring in the hottest most dynamic young coach in the country be he will struggle to consistently bring in top level talent unless given the right “sales tools”.
