Why is sweet 16 the benchmark?

It is not f@cking absurd. What banner gets displayed by making the sweet 16? You still end up a loser by not advancing further in the NCAA tournament. Right now it is a crapshoot as to who will win the NCAA tournament. St Peters making the sweet 16 is a joke.
Winning 4 B10 Games in 4 days is an accomplishment that earns a banner. Winning the NCAA Tournament is an accomplishment that also earns a banner.

So, in your world, there's the National Champ, and the second best thing to accomplish in a season is...a conference tourney championship.

Dude, I've had a hard few days. Please give me some of whatever you are snorting.

A sweet 16 banner?

I am not sure what benchmark everyone has for success. But in the NCAA tournament there are 95 teams that have made the sweet 16 since Iowa in 1999. There are 71 teams that have made the Elite 8 since Iowa in 1987. And 51 teams that have made the final 4 since Iowa in 1980. I am not sure why some of the posters on here are dismissing the NCAA tournament. But for me that is where I count success for a program. This is the data, everyone can do with it as they please.

For the record, I find all 3 of those stats to be absolutely nauseating.

What I'd really like to see is average end-of-season RPI/NET/KenPom/Sagarin/etc averages over the past 23 seasons among the teams outside that 95 that have been in the Sweet 16 since Iowa was last there. My guess is that Iowa is #1 AINEC. They have worked hard in earning the reputation as the quintessential 21st century NCAA Tourney choke-artists...

I am really hoping Dochterman, Leistekow, or somebody else here takes that project on. It’s perfect for Doc in my view.

I am not dismissing previous NCAA tournaments. This NCAA tournament however I believe has been terribly skewed by the terrible 3 point shooting that has been displayed by many teams in the tournament. Many of the top seeded teams have been eliminated by teams like St. Peters that were not even ranked because of their teams poor 3 point shooting.

I believe that the NCAA shouldn't put out a new basketball for the tournament that many people have said does not feel right and as one person said was a basketball that they feel was a Walmart $5.99 special.

The 3 point percentage overall in this tournament has been abysmal and it hasn't been because of teams not having open looks. Perhaps someone can provide the data relating to the overall 3 point percentage for all the teams that have played in this 2022 tournament.

Didn't move anything. Proved we are yesterday's news. I could name every Iowa basketball team in history to make the Sweet 16, but couldn't name one thing about who said what on TV hyping the team up any year. That's my point. Iowa essentially wiped out any "relevance" they may have had pre-Tourney by laying a gigantic turd. Absolutely no casual basketball fan in the country will remember Iowa's BTT championship, but many will remember that time Iowa was a 5 seed and lost their opener to a 12 seed and busted their bracket because they bought-in too much to the hype.
I don't even think you understand what you are trying to argue. You said "A team that has gone as long as Iowa has without a Sweet 16 is completely irrelevant on a national level. Winning conference tourneys does nothing to fix that." Well, you should have said ",once they lose". They were relevant for a good week because of winning in the conference tourney. That's it.

Ridicule me all you want, but why is sweet 16 so much better than a B10 championship? Obviously, everyone wanted a deeper run, but do they hang sweet 16 banners? Don't think so, but I sure bet they'll have a B10 champ one. It's the nature of 1 and done's... everyone has a shitty shooting day time to time. I'd rather have a tournament championship than none at all.
I agree conference tournament championship is equivalent or better than a sweet sixteen. The conference tourney takes more wins and a lot of times a tougher win along the way.

Regular season conference championships are probably better than an elite 8 and close to on par with a Final Four. The regular season takes a lot more wins and a lot more quality wins. Yes, its more fun to end the season on a high but a conference championship demonstrates excellence for a season and is a lot of fun for a fan.
