I really like the look of isu's new staff. I like the mix of young and old. one of Iowa's best up and coming coaches in Metcalf. only thing I don't care for is lack of a big.

At this point I think I would trade the unknown of isu for more of the same at Iowa.

Yes I am fully aware that many will wish me out the door for saying that. but realistically I see isu matching iowa very soon. And maybe even surpassing.

Iowa

Dresser along with two unproven's and one that was let go by Iowa.

I thought our staff did an underrated job this year all things considered. Everyone needs to take a deep breath. It's not like someone turned down and Iowa job to go to ISU.

Dresser's teams best finish is 4th.

Tom has 3 National Titles.

That makes this decision rather easy.

And neither did cael before he got to psu.

I'm not saying dresser is the next cael, but more that sometimes when the right coach finds the right spot good things happen.

I like what dresser and the coaches are selling. I'm still a hawk fan, but I think I will be paying a bit more attention to isu wrestling

The bearded one that got let go was still part of more championships that Morningstar and Berhow.

I've always paid attention. This doesn't change a thing in that regard. Maybe they'll get good enough so people will start to give a shit again, wouldn't that be something!

But didn't Dresser and VT finish higher than Iowa in 2016? So yes, as much as we want to believe it can't/won't happen, the reality is that Dresser is a good coach and he could possibly finish in the top 5 at nationals every year.

I am not trying to be pro Dresser and it kills me to say good things about ISU, but right now with this hire ISU will become a hot team very quickly. They will be in the hunt for national championships very soon. If Iowa continues to just maintain, we will be left in the dust.

Remember when all the die hard Iowa fans would say, "well just wait until Cael and PSU win a championship before we worry about them". Well look at them now. Iowa did not "worry" about them until it was too late. I do not want ISU to surpass Iowa because the fans, administration, etc want to live in the past.

Being a good athlete does not equate into being a good coach. I loved to watch Brent wrestle, but he has never coached in a college program and is unproven as a coach. He was hired by USA Wrestling and never even made it to the full-time position--did he? Often times the very best athletes don't make the best coaches. Its a different type of work ethic and payback, so time will tell, but I for one am not worried. I do believe the ISU program will improve, but I don't see them surpassing Iowa at least not in the next decade.

Morningstar had one season of coaching experience when he got here. Are we acting like 1 year is a dramatic difference than 1/2 year or 0 (depending on how you want to look at Brent's experiences this season)?

I think wrestling is the exception to the rule that the best athletes in their sport don't necessarily translate to good coaches. In most other sports I would agree with you. Carl, Brands, and John Smith were all national champs and Olympic gold medalists. Those 3 coaches are the best in wrestling at the moment, imo.

i guess i'm the only one that thinks this is great, ist is okies main competition. i hope they make john smiths job a bitch with four hawkeyes leading the charge. if tnt and us as fans are afraid of the competition then maybe wrestling isn't the right sport. iowa state i think i would rather continue to suck then to turn my program over to the ones whos shadow i'm trying to escape.it's all good guys if they turn it around it's because of iowa wrestling.if not it will be expose dresser for the car salesman that he is. good or bad m* is toms guy i admire his loyalty to him and if he is picking the wrong guy he will and should be held responsible. pretty sad that widespread is the one to point out that we are depressed at finishing 4th and how great of a problem that is.alot of rambling here, but this whole thing is intriguing to me.

There is also a difference between being a head coach and a volunteer assistant. Dresser will be in charge of who is recruited and who is not recruited. Dresser will be in charge of how duties are passed out to his assistants, he will be in charge of how scholarships are given out. Dresser will be in "control" of the room.

So while Metcalf will have a huge impact on the room in the way he interacts with recruits, how he teaches technique, how he motivates wrestlers; he will not have a major impact in the business side of coaching.

So in a sense Metcalf is a seasoned veteran in that he will being using the same qualities that made him a good wrestler and coach for his whole life.

I do see what Descat is saying, but Dresser is a known commodity and I believe he has enough experience to put Metcalf in a position to succeed. If Metcalf does well, then he will move up the ladder quickly and most likely will not be at ISU for long.

I hope the reason why Brands does not have Metcalf on his staff now is because he is holding out for an even better coach/leader in McD. (I have absolutely no idea if this is true, this would just be a silver lining)

Get grip if you think ISU will be legit in the hunt for a team title any time soon. Not too mention your comparison's between Dresser and Sanderson.

Not trying to stir the pot at all, but how many of TnT's 3 championships came outside of a double recruiting class (I genuinely don't know the answer to this question)?

Right now, I'd take ISU's team vs Iowa's. Metcalf is TnT 2.0 so you get the same more or less with him in the room. Dresser and the others are all just gravy and offer more than the rest of Iowa's current assistants IMO.

Edit* I would take Metcalf over McD any day of the week as well. This wouldn't even be a question I'd have to think about.

Sure Metcalf is equal to the Brands. lol

You are correct his championships are due to his double up class

Beyond those 3 championships Brands has 1 runner up finish in team results the last 7 years. That was because PSU redshirted a couple of studs that year.

My take...I thought for sure Metcalf was on his way to Colorado and this sucks...not going to lie. However, Brent has to do what's best for his family and it sound like this is a six figure deal according to CP. That's real money in the sport of wrestling and too much to pass up and its not a loyalty or greed thing either. This does disprove a lot of rumors about Dresser or leaps of logic (which I was guilty of) though about him advising the AD to not release the Iowa guys. It still could have happened behind close doors with the Va Tech AD I suppose but if it was even suspected, than Brent wouldn't be headed to Ames.

I think Metcalf gets some real college coaching experience at ISU then baring some sort of amazing build up by Rodger Chandler, he gets offered a head coaching gig at Michigan State. If the money is truly as high at ISU as people are saying than maybe he doesn't accept, but that is how I see Brent's future. From there who knows, if he has a ton of success then I could see him replacing TnT about a decade from now.

Anyone know if ISU has had donors step forward with all this $$? Their FB and MBB coaches aren't that highly paid (in the relative world of coaches salaries), though Prohm did just get a bump. Together they still make less the Ferentz (not that you can really even compare Big12 and Big10 money outside of Texas)

Two things about this whole situation that are vastly understated.

1. Recruiting in Iowa, against the U of I and even against Schwab and UNI will be very difficult. Much more difficult than recruiting Virginia and the east coast simply due to population and the lack of prominent programs in that area. People easily forget Cael couldn't do it.

2. Iowa wrestles in the premier conference in the country. ISU wrestles in a hybrid conference of random schools, only one of which is relevant in the sport. That matters when it comes to recruiting; both in state and elite, national kids.

I'm just not sure how much of an impact the situation at ISU has on Iowa. Time will tell but we're competing against the elites for elite kids. ISU is not in that realm, even with the Dresser hire. Maybe in 5 years, they're there but right now and in the immediate future, I don't see the direct impact. Let's see how the head to head battles for the top in state kids go over the next 2-3 years and let's see if they can draw some top 10 talent.

Right now, the responses are overly emotional and based on projections that heavily skew towards ISU based on very little evidence to back it up. The best thing Brands and Co can do is keep bringing in talent and capitalize on a lineup that projects to be very good in 2-3 years.

Throw in that Iowa City is 10x the town as Ames.

Fair point. Not to mention the fan draw. Facilities wise, I'm not familiar with with ISU has but given the money that's come pouring in for the program, if they're not up to par now, they will be in the future.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to act like ISU didn't do something big, because they did. But I think the segment of the fan base freaking out and acting like it's the end of Iowa wrestling are overreacting in a big, big way. ISU is better off now than they were before they made the move to get rid of KJ. No question. But to be a top 5 program consistently (where Iowa is not counting this upcoming year) won't happen overnight and it may not ever happen regardless of how many former Hawkeyes they bring on board. ISU has a lot of schools to pick off before they get to the Hawkeyes. Next year will be their best shot and they're not equipped to beat us next year, even with the holes we'll have.

How did metcalf get so much better than mcd all of a sudden? I think Matt would be great asst to have on board.

Does it sting a little that we "lost" out on Metcalf, maybe a little. I look at it this way, with all the outstanding wrestlers that leave our school, we can't have them ALL as coaches on our staff no matter how bad we want them.

Years down the road are we going to have the same conversation if a Gillman, Clark, (eventually Lee), etc catch on at other schools?

As much as it stings to some people, I think its MORE impressive if you look at the huge amount of schools that have either coaches or asst coaches with Iowa ties. To me, that's proof that we are doing it right at Iowa and schools would rather go after our past great wrestlers that looking at some of their own alums.

The other thing I look at is that even though some of our wrestlers go to other schools and want to do their best and make the school great, their heart and their roots will still bleed Hawkeye gold and black!
