Because that's where he'll be starting next year after Murin, Lugo, Kemerer, and Marinelli all drop a weight class.

Yea, but he would dominate 125. I can't think of a single 125 that would be able to beat him.

If you had realized he isn’t a 174 like he rest of us did back at the Iowa duals, it might make more sense to you. That said, it is absolutely baffling he’s not a 174 pounder.
So we make at least 2 and potentially 3 guys, 2 of which are AAs at their current weights, cut from their best weights to get an unproven young in at 165? And who's our 174?
Count me as one that would rather see our guys pack on some muscle and weight and be strong come March instead of looking weak and lifeless after a long season of cutting. In case you haven't noticed its been working really well for psu.

It seems as if the coaches and Young have already given the 174 spot to Gunther after losing a close wrestle off. This would have been a nice tournament to see how they competed against a comparative field. I guess nobody else thought that way and it’s pretty disappointing.
The higher finisher of the 2 will provide the team points at 165.
These points are well taken. I don’t have interest in guys making a challenging cut.
Hopefully after Midlands Young moves up to 174 and challenges Gunther
Neither is going to get us where we want to be. If these 2 are all we have the next few years it's not good.
I agree 100%. I think the Hawks do better with Young versus Gunther at 174. Nothing against Gunther by any means. Go Hawks!!!
Seriously? Gunther beat Young in a wrestle off and Young looks like an average size 165 pounder.
Who's better Marinelli, or Gunther? Who's does Young have a better opportunity to beat? Who is younger Gunther, or Young? Who has more potential Gunther, or Young based on chances in lineup already? What is more of a need weight this year, & next? Are you fellas seeing a pattern here?
Im with you man. Young should be wrestling 174 at this tournament. Baffling to me he isn’t.

Marinelli is wrestling with a brace the size of Rhode Island - if that isn’t reason #1 why he is at 165 that I can’t help you out anymore....
Spencer Lee, & Sam Stoll are wearing same said knee brace. I hope Iowa didn't sign Young as an insurance policy to Marinelli. That's not fair to Young first & foremost. .....and a close second a very unwise way to spend scholarship dollars. Especially in the 9.9 & PSU era. Nice try though.

Given that Kemerer is a class ahead of the other two, no.
Saying it isn’t fair to Young that they signed him and Marinelli.
Ok, verbally committed first? Pretty sure he was the guy known to "open the pipeline" to Young Guns.

What you call an insurance policy other people call depth. We need depth, and if Young wants to wrestle, he wins a spot or he sits, just like everybody else. Then if something happens to the guy ahead of him, take advantage of your opportunity.
Young wasn't some sure-fire can't miss stud that is most likely on a full ride. He was a good recruit who had and still has a chance to be a starter at some point, but he needs to get better like a lot of people do in order for that to happen. He's not the first and won't be the last, those rules apply to everyone not named Spencer Lee (and a few others past and present).
I have no problem with Young at 65 right now since it’s clear that he isn’t a full feed 74. Plus Gunther beat him and has been mostly serviceable. What I do question is why he isn’t a full feed 74 yet knowing well before The Bull’s injury that Bull was 165. I’ll be equally frustrated next year if Wilcke or Warner aren’t at 184. It’s about expectation and management. Seems like there has been a little bull-headedness and willingness to try to convince every guy that “they’re the guy they just have to earn it.” I hope and expect that to change just as our recruitment philosophy has. Ya heard?
