***#16 Iowa vs Minnesota Game Thread***

This is Lindsay Whalen's 5th season as Minnesota's head coach. I honestly thought that she would have turned things around by now in Minnesota.

In 2018 she took over coaching duties at Minnesota while continuing to play for the Minnesota Lynx of the WNBA. She retired from playing professional basketball in the summer of 2018 (at the end of the 2018 WNBA season).

Year 1 was pretty good. Years 2 through 5? Not good.

Her Minnesota coaching record:

21-11, 9-9: 2018-2019 (NIT)
16-15, 5-13: 2019-2020 (no postseason; COVID)
8-13, 7-11: 2020-2021 (no postseason)
15-18, 7-11: 2021-2022 (NIT)
5-4, 1-0: 2022-2023

The key to winning will be defending Braun (and Battle too). I'm not expecting us to have any issues getting high percentage looks at the basket on offense, but if we don't put energy into getting stops it's just going to become a running match. Braun in particular has the ability to go off if left unchecked, and she's also very capable of passing to the open shooter. Even if Kate gets the primary assignment on her it will take a team effort. Having watched a few Minnesota games this season, their team morale is much higher than the last few seasons.

Monica C. should feast tonite and have a huge game. Minn. should be feisty and we could easily have a letdown but we should win. Hawks 87-72 after competitive 1st half

She's got a really young group this year. If they all stay I expect them to improve a lot in the future, especially with Mara Braun.

Spot on. Warnock checking Heyer is also an interesting matchup. Warnock moving a little better this year. May need to vs Heyer. Also, Braun, Battle and Heyer were all 3 top 55 per ESPN. Quite a freshman haul that is already panning out.
