******Iowa vs Nebraska Game Thread******

Great game by the perimeter tonite. Post play on offense was not up to par.

Also, BTN putting on a Nebraska advertisement tonite with all of the Husker history and all the story lines of the players, families, past Huskers, etc. Have never seen BTN put so much emphasis on only one of the teams playing history. And not one mention of Clark who would top all of Nebbies great players. (sorry for the rant)

They have done a few with Iowa/Clark, usually tied to home games.

I'd almost given up on these gals 3 weeks ago.

Glad to be so wrong!
Basketball is a loooonnnngggg season. Every team goes thru parts of the season where they are hurt, not shooting well or nit catching breaks. Good teams play hard and work through these periods. Good coaches understand this is part of the game/season. Players and coaches have to “trust the process”…I Believe UIowa knows this. Perhaps its fans will learn it, too.

Maybe this came up somewhere in the thread, but for me Heiden oozes potential.
If we have guards that can feed the post in the years to come, Ava will be a terror in the B10.
This is particularly true because almost all post players show steady improvement under Jensen

Also, Hays has not played against the greatest competition, but her footwork is very strong.

Defense keeps you in almost all games. It just boggles the mind that some coaches cannot figure this out.

If they play defense like this for remaining games, I think we get 3 or 4 of remaining 5. Barker will be the nightmare matchup.

Whatever Jensen was telling the team to keep their heads level through all the officiating BS had to be brilliant. Far too many terrible horrible calls going against the team, and they just kept playing like they knew it was going to be 5 on 7. That takes some toughness.

Olsen is pretty freakin good when she's on her game. If you have that and a player knocking down 3s, the team is going to find success.

Affolter continues the elevation back to what we knew last year. Hitting big shots when the defense forgets about her. The clock beater really hurt Nebraska after a good defensive possession.

I think playing Mallegni for the height mucked things up for Nebraska, and Teagan played well. She has some game, but it hasn't all come through just yet.

The one positive I always felt we had at the 5, is having 15 fouls to give. Geesh, needed them tonight.
Bunny missing Hannah is frustrating because she'll play her next game and make a bunch of tough ones.

Great to see Taylor McCabe do great in Nebraska. That recruiting loss still stings with them, so those daggers hurt even more.

I thought Iowa would win there simply because I felt Kylie was going to make Prince's life miserable, and she and others did. The Hawks have been upping their D this year for sure.

I was glad to see Mallegni drive that once to the basket, and I hope we'll see more of that from her in the future.

JJ has kept this team fully engaged!

I’ll say it again, with continued focus and growth. I believe we are the third best team in the Big Ten.

Exactly

I was looking at the boxscore. It listed Iowa had 31 rebounds vs Nebraska's 29. When I added up Iowa's individual rebound numbers, there were 6 offensive rebounds and 19 defensive rebounds. But the totals at the bottom were 12 and 19, respectively. Did Iowa really get 6 dead ball rebounds on offense? On the other hand, Nebraska seemed to only have 1 dead ball rebound, on defense. Maybe that's lady luck showing.

Anyone on the ISU forum? Anyone in here say we're still "very average?"
Well. It looks like Iowa women’s basketball is back. They basically played themselves in the tournament in the last three games and now on their way to being ranked

Old Lucy is playing like clark all the sudden.

We lost the feed at half. Had to follow on ESPN gamecast. Watched the 2nd half later on YouTube. That sucked.

We'll beat Rutgers and get votes. We're better than average. We've been needing a takeover player and Lucie has grabbed the reins. We're competitive in the 2nd tier of the Big Ten and can make noise in the Tourney. Too bad Jensen didn't bring Heiden along. She has a skill set we need as well as depth she adds as face the "forests" ahead.

We're not even close to average. We weren't even close to avg on the 5 game losing streak.

Depending how you look at it, we're already receiving votes. A new Coaches Poll comes out today.

USA Today Coaches Poll (2/4/25 last week)
Others Receiving Votes
Creighton, Baylor, Utah, Oklahoma State, Iowa, Mississippi, Richmond, Louisville, Florida Gulf Coast, George Mason, Illinois

Torvik Rankings currently has:
Team Ranking
Past Week Games
Notes on 4 Teams Ahead of Us
Iowa #23Beat #29 (A) and #40 (A)Min 4 teams to fall out before we're in
Baylor #25Beat #73 (H) and #174 (A)?
Oklahoma State #30Beat #9 (H)Not passing them
Utah #31Beat #77 (A) and 160 (H)Most likely Not passing them
Creighton #36Beat #55 (A) and 62 (H)Not passing them

1) Torvik already has us in Top 25.
2) According to my notes, I'd be surprised if we get in the Top 25 on the Coaches Poll this week. However, we should move up in the receiving votes section.

Good to see the ladies win big and the fans here with all the accolades. Hope they continue doing well.
I remember just 3 weeks ago posters here saying fire Jan, Shes in over her head and bring back Bluder.
Let's hope Jan/ this team has things figured out now and go far into the tournament.

Get used to it. Teams are going to start utilizing Iowa games to do honorifics because it is easier for them to pack the house.

We weren't even close to avg on the 5 game losing streak.
Average margin in those losses was under 5 points; biggest margin all year was 10 points to a very good Tennessee team.
Here's the records of the teams we've lost to: 17-6, 18-5, 19-5, 19-5, 15-8, 16-8, 16-8; all Big 10 or SEC teams.
Not many 'average' teams can match that. Just had to learn how to win.

Not nit picking but you aware of the definition of average.

Iowa is competitive in the Big Ten now after a 5 game losing streak in which the point spreads were close, It was obvious lack of leadership was the issue and Lucie Olson's taking control is the catalyst.

Average would put Iowa in the 155th ranking of teams. Iowa is "far from average".

We're 29th in net, so we might receive votes, but prob won't be ranked unless we stay close with UCLA and win all other games.

Right now we're viewed as a bubble team, and teams are apprehensive about ranking bubble teams.

You're missing my point. Not many people can read between the lines well enough with the context of the rest of the message to figure out what's being stated. I can't believe I even have to clarify this.

I also stated this, "1) Torvik already has us in Top 25."
I also stated this, "Depending how you look at it, we're already receiving votes. A new Coaches Poll comes out today."
I also stated this, "However, we should move up in the receiving votes section."

I also stated this, "Hawks are back to just inside the Top 25 on the composite computer models." before the game last night. Our avg composite ranking before we beat Nebraska last night was #25. It will surely go up again beating a Quad 1 on their home floor.

Now what kind of mind thinks when someone says, "We're not even close to average. We weren't even close to avg on the 5 game losing streak.", that I'm talking about BELOW average? In fact, we're ABOVE above average to the point we've been a Top 35 team all year long.

Hell, I've been tracking these rankings the whole time I've been on this board. We've been near the Top 25 the whole time even during our 5 game losing streak. I even put out a post before every game that states our avg ranking and worst we've ever been is #33.

Here's my post on our worst avg composite ranking this season at #33.

Even on Sports-Reference.com which usually has the most consistent rankings from day to day has bounced us around between #28 and #32 almost all year long. That's pretty consistent. I take it that's not even close to average.

I'm well aware of NET rankings. It's been close to Sports-Reference.com. It's also all pretty close to the composite rankings I do before every game.

I'll state it again. We're not even close to average. We weren't even close to avg on the 5 game losing streak.
How in the hell is 155th even close to ~#33 (at our worst during the 5 game losing streak) or ~#25 (now)?

According to today's Coaches Poll we're not even receiving votes now even after beating Minny and Nebbie on their home floors. Last week we received 16 votes. This week zero votes! It's why I hate these polls.

Great road win at a tough place to play with refs that were not helpful at all. Lucy was amazing hitting outside, slashing to the basket and dropping some assists. Affolter was great as well as McCabe. Everyone contributed. Stuelke plays with great energy, I hate when she has these games were she misses a bunch of bunnies. Guyton has been cold the past couple games. Hopefully she will find her touch again but still playing hard regardless.

'm taking issue with you saying this is an average team. 71% winning record with 3-5 Quad 1 record, including 2-2 against Top 10 teams, one win against a top 5. That ain't average. The 155 reference was a median number of the 330 teams or however many teams there are competing in the NCAA.

We knew this was a team that lost unreal amount of talent and needed to find its identity. It has been frustrating to not have a leader, a player to take control when games are on the line. Olsen was an All America caliber player last year and she hadn't settled in completely mid-year. this season. By the USC game she found her grove and the Iowa offense has been flowing. She has confidence and the team functions with her leadership. Inserting Hannah at the post has helped stabilized the offense since she didn't seem to fit in the forward model.

The frosh are frosh, very talented and in the learning mode.

I'm optimistic with this team. ESPN has us an NCAA 10 seed now. We have road games at Michigan and Ohio State and home against UCLA for severe tests. Big time games are opportunities.

Do you understand what context means? You just did the very same thing I explained that the team isn't even close to average and why. What part of we're ABOVE above average to the point we've been a Top 35 team all year long don't you understand?

Where did I say we we're average? Point out the exact quote where I said we're average.

I even have a message 2 hours earlier in this thread asking who in here thinks we're still "very average?"
That's because a person with a handle of Jnecker4cy on the ISU forum said we're still "very average." Not me!
Anyone on the ISU forum? Anyone in here say we're still "very average?"

Btw, a very astute observer with the handle of ICCYFAN rebutted Jnecker4cy "very average" comment which is very easy to do:
Let's not get carried away, Iowa has Zero votes for the top 25 and Neither does Nebraska. Yes they are having a good stretch but they still are very average.
ICCYFAN said:

"Yeah, just a couple of "very average" teams with Iowa carding their fourth Quad 1 Win of the year at Nebraska on Monday night. Do you know how many NCAA WBB teams have more Quad 1 Wins than Iowa's four at this moment in time? Hint: As of 2/10, only six NCAA WBB teams had >4 Quad One victories. "Very average" indeed!

For what it's worth, Nebraska has a pair of Quad 1 wins, toiling away in the NET #2 Rated Conference.

Why in the world would you cite the "popularity" poles when the season has progressed to the point where significant NET data exists?"

I just got done profusely explaining to you we were a Top 35 team all year long even during our 5 game losing streak.

Again, I'll ask you, how in the hell is 155th even close to ~#33 (at our worst during the 5 game losing streak) or ~#25 (now)?

Do you understand that 155th isn't even close to #33?
Mind you that #33 rating is at our worst point this year.

A group of us have even been chastised on this forum to temper our expectations because I think we've could of been closer to a Top 15 team all year. Hence, our win over USC bears this out. Still think we have a chance to take down OSU and UCLA.

I'll state it again. We're not even close to average. We weren't even close to avg on the 5 game losing streak.
Do you understand what "not even close to" means?

Here's an early post of my high expectations of this team and why.

The above post goes along with a thread I started regarding it.
Recruiting Players Pre-Clark, Clark Years & Post-Clark: 8 Years of Rankings (2 Years Prior to Clark, The 4 Clark Years & 2 Years After Clark)

This is why we're not even close to an average team. The rankings of our players bears out that we should be at the very least be in the top 10% of Div 1 teams. However, I say with our player rankings show we should be within the Top 5% of Div 1 teams. Bart Torvik and Sonny Moore both ranks 362 programs which I believe are all Div 1. Meaning we should be very close to a Sweet 16 team with our player talent.
