2023 NCAA Championships Session I Thread

solid showing this morning but some huge matches loom tonight. teske’s loss hurts a lot because he had byrd running on empty and didn’t capitalize. hope teske and cobe can rack up some bonus points on the backside and we win the close ones tonight. go hawks

All in all not a bad round. Teske could have won if he wasn't obsessed with going to him back against top guys. Murin has a tough next round
Sebreicht probably wouldn't have lost if he wasn't fulfilling iowas mandatory shoulder injury slot. And Warner looked slightly more inspired than usual. I do miss when cass would pin people, but its whatever
IMO, Warner looked very good. Caffey looked like he lost before he walked out there. Tonight is the key match for JW.

While 133 and 157 try to keep all ten alive tonight, 149, 165, 174, 184, and 197 all have huge matches tonight. 2 coin flips and 3 solid underdogs. Hawks need to win at least 3 of these weights. Tonight will tell the tale for Iowa on the over/under for 5 AA.

Overall thoughts from round 1:

It's bittersweet that this tournament is the last time we'll ever see Spencer in the black & gold. Savor it, fellas...

Teske has skill but strikes me as one of those guys who always seems to find a way to lose. That said, his path on the backside to AA isn't the worst.

Any points Siebrecht gave us at this tournament would be gravy. Those of you who were expecting him to make some noise were seriously overestimating him.

Good win for Brands, but if he waits around and tries to win every match in the last 20 seconds he's gonna have a rough tournament.

I liked the Warner we saw in round 1. I hope that version sticks around. If he gets past Elam, he has a pretty decent road to the finals.

Non-Iowa related, how impressive is this young NC State team?! They had an awesome first round, and that team is mostly freshman and sophomores. They're going to be a force next year.

Really disappointed there. Cobe is my favorite wrestler to watch but can't give away a win when they are hard to come by. Just furthers the PSU can coach their guys up and Iowa can't. SVN should've lost and came back for a pin, Cobe should've won and gave it away.
So much fail in this post...

SVN is a blue chip recruit who got down early and battled back, think Borschel in the national semis.

Cobe is a zero * recruit who battled his way through the season as an undersized 157, earning some top 10 skins along the way until he hurt his shoulder. Obviously it impacted him at BTT and today.

Injuries are part of the game, no excuses, but let's not throw out the coaching card on this one.

FWIW, take a look at the guys wearing the shoulder armor today... their W/L record wasn't very good.

Shoulder brace wasn’t there for cobe in big tens. We are consistently the least healthy team in March. Doesn’t matter how good our recruits are or how well we coach them up if they’re hurt. SMH
The hell it wasn't!

All 10 of our guys are on the mat this weekend.

Other wrestlers had to drop out, some are barely able to get through a first round match. It's a brutal sport and guys are beat to hell every year.

Heck overall this is about as healthy as we've been since the 2020 team that was going to run away with the title.

I have been impressed with what Pat Pop has built there. They get after it.

Where can we see the updated brackets
Trackwrestling is always good. Very good minute-by-minute information. ICON upper left will navigate (brackets) by weight class. Three dots upper right will navigate the entire tournament. This information redundant for many, useful for some. Link below.

Va Tech is underperforming with 6 points, projected 51.5 without bonus for their 10 wrestlers
