The 2023 NCAA Wrestling Tournament doesn't start until next week (March 16-18 in Tulsa, OK), but the field is set for the event and the brackets have been released. Brackets for all 10 weights are available here.

Iowa qualified a wrestler at all 10 weights. Two Iowa wrestlers (Spencer Lee and Real Woods) received #1 seeds at their respective weights, but only three other Iowa wrestlers received single-digit seeds (Max Murin, Patrick Kennedy, and Tony Cassioppi). The other five Iowa wrestlers heading to the NCAA Tournament (Brody Teske, Cobe Siebrecht, Nelson Brands, Abe Assad, and Jacob Warner) all received double-digit seeds. Those double-digit seeds set them up for difficult matches -- they'll need to need to produce several upsets to stay alive on the championship side of the bracket.

These guys need to win THREE matches tomorrow (two in the early session, one Friday night) to secure All-America status.

Day one of the 2023 NCAA Wrestling Tournament went mostly as expected for #2 Iowa, at least according to the seeds. Iowa went 8-2 in Round One; the higher-seeded wrestler won 9 of those 10 matches, with the only upset being (14) Cobe Siebrecht's loss to (19) Garrett Model (Wisconsin). In the second round, Iowa wrestlers went 5-3, with the higher-seeded wrestler going 6-2 in those bouts. Iowa benefited from one upset (at 174, where (11) Nelson Brands edged Ohio State's (6) Ethan Smith, 3-1) and was the victim of the other upset (at 165, where (6) Patrick Kennedy lost 3-2 to Michigan's (11) Cameron Amine).

All told, Iowa went 15-5 on Thursday, putting five wrestlers into the quarterfinals and the other five staying alive in the consolation bracket. Those results were good enough to put Iowa in second place in the team race behind #1 Penn State, the heavy pre-tournament favorite.

TEAM STANDINGS after Thursday

3Missouri17.563
4Minnesota16.534
4NC State16.526

7Nebraska15.552

Iowa remains within range of Penn State in the team race for now, but the quarterfinal round will provide opportunities for separation. That round is the first big point round, since winners in the quarterfinals assure themselves of no worse than a sixth-place finish. Iowa has five quarterfinalists, but will only be favored in three of those matches. Penn State has seven semifinalists and will be favored in six of those matches.

Friday at the NCAA Wrestling Tournament is critical for two reasons. It's moving day in terms of the team title race -- most of the team points are awarded during the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds that take place on Friday morning and evening. And for individuals, Friday is about positioning yourself for a shot at championship glory on Saturday night. You have to navigate the quarterfinal round and the semifinal round in order to book a spot in that Saturday night championship match.

Iowa put three wrestlers into the Friday night semifinals: Spencer Lee at 125 lbs, Real Woods at 141 lbs, and Tony Cassioppi at 285 lbs. Unfortunately, only Woods was able to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament finals on Saturday night. In the upset of the year -- and one of the biggest NCAA Tournament upsets ever -- Spencer Lee was shocked in the semifinal by the 4-seed, Purdue's Matt Ramos.

The 2023 NCAA Wrestling Tournament is over and, unfortunately, it did not end on a high note for Iowa wrestling. The Hawkeyes placed one wrestler in Saturday night's final session, #1 Real Woods at 141 lbs. Woods was facing #2 Andrew Alirez of Northern Colorado in the night's only matchup of unbeaten wrestlers. Unfortunately, Woods was not able to become an NCAA champion, suffering a narrow 6-4 defeat in the final.
