Annual Carver sucks thread—2019-2020 edition

I am not a big Carver Arena fan. They really need to make some changes. More amenities, Club seating, Luxury booths, better, cheaper food and beer. How about hollowing out a big area behind one of the baskets and have bathrooms and a nice food court?

I am not much of a runner

Fran thought it was great! But.....
The reality is, it's truly amassing that he can get any talented players at all, to come and play in that mausoleum.
I'm been critical of his recruiting for years but most games are played with little or no support from the students that attend the university and the athletic department is content to keep everything status quo.
Yeah, Carver has had upgrades like a practice facility, center scoreboard for replay and advertising, and the like, but the students that do come to the games have been mostly been kept in the dark and away from the game action.
Most on here know of my feeling pertaining to where the students should be moved to, so there's no need to go into that any more because Iowa has an athletic director that is more concerned about the almighty dollar then giving the students a chance to impact the game more then they have been allow too.

I still believe there’s a compromise in there to have both. Have the students starting around half court and wrap them around behind the opposing bench to the pep band. The high dollar Hawks fans can have the other 3/4 of the court side and anywhere else they want.

I wish it could/would happen, but Barta has no stomach to upset the wealthy donors to make for a better game day, allowing the students to impact the games. The guy is a coward and hides behind the almighty dollar.

The idea that we should piss off several hundred high donors in favor of a couple hundred students who may or may not show up is absolutely ridiculous

I admit I'd go to a lot more events if I lived in/around Iowa City. Making winter trips from Des Moines to Iowa at night to Carver just aren't in my wheelhouse any longer ...

Wrestling has no problem with making Carver a rocking and intimidating venue ... But you need the people in the stands and the product on the court. Carver isn't the problem ... Iowa bball is playing well this year ... but the overall product the last 20 years or so resulted in a lot of lost fans or fans who only follow with a passing interest. I come from a die-hard Hawk family (myself, 3 brothers, and my father)... We used to talk Hawk bball all the time and make a few trips over to Carver ... Now, Hawkeye basketball is a secondary topic ... I used to be on the local IClub board and have many Hawk friends in Des Moines ... and the majority (actually, pretty much all of them) I talk to sort of fall into that same bucket (follow with a passing interest) ...

I like the new BTN commercial featuring the various student sections. The old one that they used for several years showed one Iowa student. (If you're out there, speak up). I guess he must have graduated. For the new one, they just show an Iowa flag.

We have to fix this problem. For starts students/fans should be able to enjoy their team and not be nervous of police making their quota.

I see you're quick to criticize a solution to enhance the students and players game experience, but I don't see you providing much solutions to fix the problem?
Are you one of those high end donors that just want to keep it as it is? If it works for wrestling, it should work for basketball, right?
Wrong, two different sports, two different athletic styles, and two different televised sporting events. How many Iowa wrestling matches are televises on TV live during the season? Not nearly as often as almost every basketball game I bet.
As most have stated Carver was built as a multi-sports facility and wrestling mats need lots of space hence the wide rounded north and south ends.
Where the university has the student section on the south end, most of the students are too far away from the basketball court and in the dark.
They see other university's on TV and notice many of them allow their students, seating near the court where they can yell and scream and pump up the players and make the game atmosphere uncomfortable for opposing teams. That is something that is sorely missing at Carver and will until changes are made by an athletic department that will allow the students the ability to make their presence felt.
Until then, student will continue to show little interest in games, unless it's a high profile game with national interest, which is usually only once or twice a year and evidently the Iowa athletic department is completely satisfied with this!
And one wonders why Carver is a morgue during most of the games?
Kudos to the players for having to deal with such a crappy environment!

LOL, I have posted my solution on this board many, many times.

I’m too loud of a fan when I attend games at Carver.

I cheer, clap my hands, just generally get into the game.

I feel like I don’t belong when I’m at Carver.

Isn’t comparing wrestling to basketball a bit unfair?

One is the most storied program in its sport; you’d hope it would have a strong fan base. It’s not realistic to expect Iowa basketball to establish that type of winning tradition, nor have as many loyal fans.

Build new field house style arena problem solved
Brilliant!!! TV has changed the landscape...Even if you let students in free you still wouldn't get the place filled. I'm betting if you check all the B1G
teams most of them are lower since we have to play different nights and different hours. A new arena isn't going to make any difference after the first year. But maybe you and a couple of friends could donate $100,000,000 for that new arena. I guess money grows on trees in Iowa??
