Lots of low IQ posters on here just love to rip the players. For the most part, I think the players are pretty good and certainly not worth ripping. The real blame lies on Fran. He has known for a long time that his defensive schemes really suck and has done nothing about it. Also, the players tend to reflect the toughness of their coach. Well, we know how well that is going. There are a few players that I will not name that are not very good. Once again, blame Fran. He recruited them. They go out there and give it what they got. If they don't have much, don't blame them, blame Fran. I hope no one transfers out. I believe that the right coach can coach them up.

I seem to only hear blame towards Fran and not a whole lot of blame to the players even if they are not very consistent at the game of Basketball and at this level they should be.

I mean plenty do throw some blame at Payton. He’s have a pretty disappointing senior year compared to what other shooters have done with this much experience under Fran.

Guy jacks up at like 2 off balance early shot clock 3s a game. He doesn’t have much iq about when to not try to get your own.

If a new coach is hired I'd hope he'd have a group and individual meetings with players and tell them either to commit to defensive coaching or hit the road. Then target Pryce & Brock and tell them they can stay but with a smaller role. Like previous poster mentioned, they will be recruited over. Bring in some real dogs that can defend & rebound.

The mass exodus needs to include Fran.

Honestly, if I’m recruiting there will be no more players from two parent households or 3.0 gpa’s. Look at the way Iowa State has built over the years. Give me Jamaal Tinsley, Deandre Kane, Brice DeJean Jones, Royce White and Talon Horton Tucker. All with talent and all with a rap sheet a mile long. That’s how you win ball games, not with the Sanforts, Dix, Freeman and Harding.

Commenting on a player’s ability/performance is NOT blaming them for Iowa’s lack of success. There is a distinct difference that some posters fail to understand.

I criticize the roster only Insofar as this collection of players (and the team makeup we traditionally have) will never be able to compete for conference championships or sweet 16s. It’s the same collective deficiencies every year.

But you really can’t blame the players themselves for that. They aren’t the people responsible for putting the roster together.

My rule is try and not criticize individual players if they are putting in the effort to better the team. If a player quits on a program in ugly fashion, (CJ Fredrick, proctor, etc) then all bets are off.

Agreed. I don't hold it against the players in this case. There have been past teams where I've felt differently, but not so much this one.

It seems like the team is still playing hard, they just aren't good enough to get it done, and we all know about Fran's coaching of defense or lack thereof. Ultimately, whether the recruiting or the coaching isn't cutting it, that falls on Fran. It's his program, and this is the team he assembled. So that's where I place the blame, if I have to point a finger.

There obviously has been some grousing about players (Sandfort, Dembele, and Harding especially) game performance(s) in the game threads. But most of the general complaints (80%+/-) are about McCaffery. JMO

I blame Fran for MOST of the issues. That said, many players are not blowing me away with their development or effort. Dembele? Woof. The younger Sandfort? Nope. Traore played on a team that sucked, he sucked the least. Freeman came in heavier, not more muscular. Not sure who his trainer was, assuming he had one, but you're not going to add weight and do zero to maintain at least baseline quickness and lateral movement. Then there is Mulvey where I wonder how he is even still on the team. If you can't replace him with a cadaver that blocks shots, you're in trouble. There is also a basic lack of knowledge/effort with certain fundamentals. My high school coach made us run a drill where he would heave something up. If the defense did not box out and get the rebound or the ball hit the floor, we were running a long time. We had "hustle" on the back of our warmups for a reason. I haven't seen that until recently. THAT is on the players.

Bottom line, Fran is recruiting the wrong players and doing nothing from a coaching standpoint to make them better. The whole thing is a disaster.
