Brawl in Madison

In a word "yes"...by saying "shown to understand and avoid", really? I hope you are right, honestly. The Fran I see is close to exploding at some point in almost every game he coaches. It never hurts for Leader to gently remind his staff of what is expected.
He’s literally avoided a potential situation like this a handful of times by bypassing the handshake line. You think after this debacle he’s going to need reminded that it’s a good idea to avoid those situations? Seems like he’s got that figured out

I'm just happy this didn't involve an iowa team. If you told me a brands or fran did this, I honestly wouldn't be surprised.
There was a thread on twitter that said which big ten coach would you have expected to be in this situation, the vast majority said fran. So don't think I'm the only one that thinks that.
When has Fran struck anyone? I must have missed that news.

And yet. Fran has actually been the standard for NOT letting this shit happen. On more then one occasion he's waved the players off. That deal with Illinois last season could have been exactly like what we saw here. Even worse this happened with an arena full of people. Heaven forbid we see something like this escalate into the stands like the NBA game in Detroit years ago.....
And yet i would bet some of the fans in this thread who say “a bigger/better man would walk away” are the same ones who were critical of Fran for “walking away”. Certainly no one commended him at the time.

Plenty of blame to go around for both sides. After a thorough review I put the blame 3% on Wisconsin and 97% on Michigan. Also remember that the only thing that stopped Howard from further physical attacks was a policeman physically holding him back. Otherwise Howard probably would be in jail right now.
Excellent lead in sentence, well played. Your percentages were spot on.

That would have been how it could be handled as recently as 15-20 years ago. But if you put an obvious goon out there, that person will just end up getting suspended for the entire year, with Wisconsin getting 4 free throws and the ball.

I do agree that there has been enough video evidence of Davison's nonsense that he should have been suspended for at least 1 game years ago. But he does it so the refs don't see it away from the ball and he's free.
refs may miss some things in real time, however all game films are reviewed. hard to miss things that happen over and over……unless

He was grabbed by Gard and then like a minute later punched someone else that wasn't touching him. That isn't going to fly in any court there, Sparky.

1. Juwan is an idiot pressing in a game that was over.
2. Juwan is an idiot for getting mad about a timeout called because he was pressing.
3. Gard is an idiot for grabbing Juwan.
4. Juwan is the biggest idiot for throwing a punch that clearly wasn't in self defense.
Again, Gard "Stopped" Howard to counter his aggressive comment. HOWARD aggressively grabbed Gard's sweater, this is the first "aggressive" move. Then Howard points his South Side Finger right in Gard's face. And of course the punch when there was clearly no one from Madison touching him or really even close.

I’m only on the third page of this and I’m not sure what i hate more: the dumb shit by both coaching staffs or the fuçking look-at-me holier-than-thou Twitter pearl-clutching by media personalities. Good lord do I hate Twitter.
what’s twitter?

Right. Gard shouldn't have "stopped" him and should have addressed the comments later. Gard stopping him certainly didn't warrant that kind of response, though.

Juwan should be suspended for the season. Players that threw punches should be punished. Gard's actions don't warrant punishment.

I'd agree with this much, there are certainly times when the smarter man walks away. A coach instigated brawl on live TV between two very high profile programs is one of those times the smarter man turns his back and just goes to the locker room.

If you're a coach and the thought throw a punch enters your mind the preprogrammed response should be walk away. Say your piece in the press conference.

I will so Juwaan Howard wasn't so tough when Russ Millard swaggered through the Michigan huddle, or when getting blasted in the face on rebounds.

Gard's fine seems appropriate, I didn't think he'd get suspended. The player suspension seems a tad on the light side, I was thinking 2 games, but whatever. If both sides had better examples for coaches none of this would have happened.
I agree with about everything they've done disciplinary wise other than Howard should be done for year not just reg season.

I don't think Coach Ryan would have handled the exchange with Juwan the way that Greg did. Bo might have just replied to the 'll remember that" exclamation with "ok-- see ya".

Bo would’ve let Juwan talk, shook his hand and walked away with zero ****s given

Gard got fined $10K so....uhhhh....comments?
Purely a symbolic gesture.

was Fran or the Illinois assistants fined for a similar dustup? Was krabenhoff fined for being in violation of the sportsmanship policy?

Gard got fined because Howard threw a punch. It’s throwing a bone to those that would allege disparate treatment. $10k is pure theater. But if you think it’sa +1 in the scorebook for you on this issue, congrats!

lol, seriously????

So that’s the hill you want to die on?

The turning and walking away applies to Gard. Gard and the Badgers should have turned and walked back to their bench as soon as Howard grabbed him.

How do players Williams and Neath get by with a one game suspension? They both threw and connected on at least two punches each. Neath maybe threw more than two, he cuts out of the video while throwing a punch and he cuts back in a few seconds in basically the same position and he's still throwing a punch at the same guy as previously. He's out of the video long enough to have maybe thrown two or three punches at the same target.

Does anyone think Howard will look to the NBA and "self-extended" suspension? Chaney was an old man of retirement age, who still didn't do anything as bad as Howard.

I know this will never happen, but Howard needs to pay Gard's fine. If Howard doesn't take that swing, there's no possible way on this Earth that the Big Ten fines Gard for holding Howard's arm in the handshake line. Absolutely zero. Coaches have been doing that exact thing for as long as there have been coaches. No rational adult reacts the way Howard did and no rational adult should have been expected to predict it.
Howard paying his fine, as symbolic as it is, would go a long way toward demonstrating the kind of contrition that's in his apology statement (that someone else wrote).
