Brody Grothus

And so an era comes to an end. Props to Brody Grothus for making the sacrifice and making it to 141 - it couldn't have been easy. I don't imagine his season continues anymore after this, right?

Go get yourself some pizza and beer young man. Good luck in life and thanks for at least the attempt at 141.

------------------------------------------------ The End-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm at the tourney and my tickets are for a seat high up, so I looked around and noticed a bunch of empty seats in the first few rows of a good section. I moved to that section, have a great view, and found out that it's where parents of some Iowa wrestlers are sitting, as well as some non-participating wrestlers. I happened to end up sitting next to Brody's family. Mr. Grothus and I talked a lot during session 1 and he voiced his opinion on a lot of aspects of Iowa wrestling. One thing that he emphasized was that the cut was extremely difficult on Brody.

On a bright note, I was told that he has a good accounting job lined up in Davenport once he graduates, and will look into resuming his involvement in motocross.

Lastly, to my embarrassment I don't recognize the faces of most Iowa wrestlers (though I definitely know all the names). Tonight I was sitting next to someone who seemed like he was on the team, so I asked and it was Jake Kadel, with his dad and little brother. We chatted during the semis - cool guy, nice family.

That is what is all about. Brody is great young athlete who busted is ass for the Hawks only to fall short, Life will go on beyond this thread and his results on the mat as a Hawk. Good luck Brody in life. Go Hawks!!!

Every Hawk fan should Thank EVERY Hawk wrestler for making the cut, sacrifice, and what they go through everyday in that room! BG was always fun to watch, funky and huge heart! It is sad he drew the two tough RS Freshman and his career ended the way it did. BG will always be remembered for this post, but probably not his accolades on the mat. BG will be successful in his life after wrestling, and we all wish him the best. That's actually what matters.

Mike, you're exactly right! Mr. Grothus made the comment that wrestling has taught his sons "life lessons."

I also appreciate Brody making the cut. I will always wonder what he would have done this year if he had wrestled 57. But, it was best for the team for him to be 41 and I commend him for the sacrifice.

What bad luck to end his career. What are the odds he draws the #1 seed first round? He then wrestled him very close, but lost. And what does he get for his effort? The #2 seed gets upset early and drops right down into Brody's next match. Brody wrestles his ass off again but doesn't quite have enough.

It just goes to show you that life isn't fair. You would think that someone that would sacrifice so much would at least get a fair chance to prove he was top 6 or 7 at the weight. Which I still think he was.

Good thing for him, there is considerably more life after wrestling. This will be a harsh, but very helpful life lesson.

Good luck in all that you do, Mr. Grothus!

Hats off to Brody for giving it his best shot and taking one for the team.

Also, thanks to Patrick Rhoads for all of his hard work over the years. It was great to see him get a nice win over MN where he pulled the trigger and got to his offense, which is pretty darn good when he trusts it.

Best of luck to both young men. I anticipate that both of them will have very bright futures off the mat!

Mike Hlas from The Gazette had a few words to say.

So Grothus again fought for seven solid minutes, but was on the wrong side of a 7-5 decision to Thorn. And that was it. His tourney was done, he wouldn’t advance to the NCAAs, his career was over.

While action continued inside the arena and four of his teammates won to proceed to this afternoon’s finals, Grothus sat on a lobby floor just beyond the main arena. With his back against a pillar, he wept in sorrow.

His parents sat on the floor with him, saying little, but being there for him.

Hey, folks, those of you who are on Twitter -- let's flood Brody's Twitter feed with appreciative and supportive tweets. You all made a heck of a thread in his honor -- let's step up and show this super kid some love at a tough time.

Hawk fans are the best wrestling fans in the nation. Let's show it! Let's do this for Brody. It'll take you about a minute, and it will make his day.

One, two, three, GO!

Couldn't agree more. If I can be half as good of a man as Brody then I will be happy. WWDM you win my internet for today.

So who's tweeted Brody?

Of course, it's a decision for each fan to make for him/herself, but it's a very easy way to make a big difference for a Hawkeye who's really hurting right now. IMO, would be a very cool thing if his Twitter feed suddenly got overwhelmed with well-wishes from Hawk fans.

I tweeted to Brody, i hate the character limit of twitter.

"@Brodygrothus I know its not the finish you wanted, but we Hawk fans appreciate your sacrifice for the team and enjoyed watchin you @ Iowa!"

Awesome, Lax! Hopefully you'll be one of many Hawk fans to follow through on this. I have absolutely no doubt that Brody will greatly appreciate each and every one.

Never too late to start, Kwood! I have a grand total of something like 6 tweets. And I think I have even less followers!

I have never twittered but applaud your effort. I hope Hawkeye fans are letting Brody know how appreciated he was. I still can't get over the bad luck he ran into and am really sad for the young man.

This sad but also meaningful photo from the Sunday's Gazette after Brody's last match tells it all; Wrestling truly is blood, sweat and tears.
Good luck Brody, we all know you tried your best and we appreciate it!

Darn right, #10. Might want to send him a tweet and let him know!

I know several Hawk fans did send him tweets recently, and he tweeted his appreciation. Now's the time for the best fan base in wrestling to show support for a hurting Hawkeye.

Oh how time flies. It only seems like yesterday that Brody won the Lindenwood Open as a true fr, and some were calling to burn his shirt so he could go at 149.

Truly appreciate the sacrifice and effort given by Brody Grothus. He saw an opportunity and gave all he could. People that haven't wrestled, haven't competed for something will never comprehend what he has done. He will be a success in life. Thank you Brody and thanks to all the guys in that room that show up everyday to get better. Not for the glory, just to compete and get better. A valuable trait in life.
