Day 3: Finals Matches for Saturday 10:00 AM

My takeaways purely based on the results as I didn't watch any match live.

125: We are in good shape with or without Lee. I think Stickley will be able to perform quite well for us if Lee stays in redshirt this season. With Lee, we are obviously in good shape as well.

133: Seems unsettled, glad to see Pauly G has elevated his level but was hoping to see Laux close the door in his 5th year and take the spot. Hopefully this says more about Paul Glynns improvement than Laux.

141: Seems like Turk is the best guy here (for now) and with Murin being the heir apparent to the weight.

149: 3 studs, very good depth here. Glosser probably better than most teams 149 lber and he's our 3rd string.

157: Kem Dawg 'nuff said

165: Marinelli, hope knee was precautionary and he lights it up to start the season

174: Essentially even, both were top 16 guys last year at 165, and hopefully they've both made a jump to R12 - AA contenders this season. Whoever ends up being 2nd string after midlands, is a HIGH quality backup. I feel pretty good about whoever takes the mat for us in the post season, iron will be sharpening iron all season long and these guys know it will be about results against others not just winning wrestleoffs, so hopefully we see the best version of them against others.

184: Bowman will be solid here until we get PD3Hawk in here.

197: Warner is AA caliber right now the young man is straight up impressive. But I like what we've got with Wilcke too. I'd love for him to break into the top 6 here before back down to 184 next year. If Warner goes this year i would predict 3rd-5th, but next year.. Finalist.

285: Not much to info to be gathered from a 2-0 win over Costello. Main thing is to see him healthy and participating in wrestleoffs, we all know he's AA caliber when healthy.

We're very solid from 149-285. I like to see Turk get 141 included in that list, and I want Stickley + Glynn/Laux to perform against early comp! I wanna see how Stickley performs against those 9-16 ranked guys.

my eyeballs say:
125: Stickley could give some guys trouble with his length.
133: Razor thin margin between Laux and Glynn
141: Not a very close match. Turk is too quick/strong for Happel but there's no way Happel can make 133
149: Sorenson got a takedown when he absolutely needed one. We've seen that movie before. I like Lugo, too, though. He'll do well for us in the future.
157: Vintage Kemerer...shot often at the legs, finished on almost all of them. Incidentally, does anyone else think lots of shots by Kemerer are "bad shots"? He looks like he overreaches with his arms, doesn't follow with his hips quickly, doesn't work single leg angles much. I say this with MUCH APPRECIATION for his talents cuz he can take almost anyone down multiple times in a match
165: Razor thin margin. Neither guy is the ultimate answer.
174: Frustrating. Maybe 2 legitimate leg attacks during the whole 10 minutes.
184: Bowman beat up on a true freshman
197: Warner is good and deceptively strong. Wilcke is best suited to 184 but will give a good account for himself at 197 if he's the guy this year
HWT: I don't understand HWT offense very well. Stoll did outwork Costello and "earned" the stalling point. It does not look like Stoll gives his knee a second thought, which good.

The odds of both guys stalling is slim to none. Double stall is an easy out for an official who doesn't have the balls or brains to realize which guy is stalling & make the call. Double stalls are for dudes who are ok with ties & kissing their sister.
Don't know about that. I've seen a lot of matches where neither guy is doing much at all and both deserve to be called.

My main takeaways:

1) Feeling better about 141 — Turk looked athletic; hit a couple great doubles;
2) 174 was unbearable to watch again;
3) Warner is 1 year away from being an absolute monster;
4) Cash wins the slickest takedown award with a nasty duck.

Overall, feeling kind of ‘meh’ from a this year perspective.

Gunther surprising us!

As a die hard LHS Wildcat fan who watched Gunther many times in HS I am very surprised by his success! That's a good thing and I'm excited for him. But my question is if/ when The Bull is healthy does he get handed the starting spot over Gunther? Is Gunther getting any scholly $?

Yea...except there were no real legit shots in the match. Call it on both, the ref lets them know that he's not going to let them stand around for 7 minutes. The freestyle action rules really helped it...folkstyle needs to do the same.

I think using freestyle passivity and shot clock to replace stalling would be great. It could also be applied well to top/bottom wrestling. If stalling on top then get a passivity, then put on 30 second shot clock, turn him in 30 seconds or cut him/ride him out and give up a point. Forces action in mat wrestling, obviously wouldn't be used with <30 seconds left in periods so would still allow for crucial rideouts. On the feet the benefits are obvious.

Yeah! Stalling is stalling. It is not up to the ref to decide who is stalling more, It is up to him to call whomever is stalling. I love the double stall call.

125- Stickley is better than expected. Pretty slick with his technique and length. Excited to see how he fares with better competition.
133- not over by a long shot with a last second takedown by glynn to win it. Thought Laux knee didnt touch until after time ran out personally.
141- Turk is explosive!
149-The Soaring Eagle got his payback and won in his normal conservative fashion. Wait for the right time and get that takedown when its there.
157- Kem-dawg seemed to fall into singles and when he has a leg he seems to always finish.
165- Moody is an "orange" with his BS antics. McQuillen got a few early takedowns and then Moody started picking up his offense late. When he would let McQuillen up, Moody kept kicking his legs out from behind. Complete orange move and cant wait for the Bull to take it to him.
174- I'm not sure we seen the best of these two. Both good hand fighters but they looked hesitant to shoot.
184- Bowman loves his leg riding and was tough on top.
197- Warner had a couple good reshots and Cash with the slick duck. The baby faced assassin is who we thought he was!
285- Castillo ran backwards the whole time and chose neutral in the 3rd when down by 1. He must not be there yet on bottom and looked like he just wanted to keep it close with Stoll. Not a lot of wrestling in middle of the mat.

Thanks. Is that a good sign saying Costello is that good or a bad sign saying maybe Stoll isn't a 100 % ?

Don't know, hopefully it's Stoll being conservative.

iirc, Cassiopi handily beat Costello at Jr FS this past summer.

Wilcke's duck under was awesome. Surprised nobody had mentioned it earlier. Thought he looked bigger and more aggressive than last year.

It doesn't happen often; but, it does happen.

Do you officiate? Yeah, I didn't think so.. Having balls is making the correct call anytime and every time. Yes, I do officiate.

Double stalls are for dudes who are ok with ties & kissing their sister

Note to self: Never drink and post.

I think Stoll was being a little careful with his knee, but I also think these past couple months in the room have helped Costello a lot, and that he would have a decent record as a true freshman if Stoll was still he hurt. Im guessing he would be a little bit better then what Holloway was last year. From the sounds of it, I didn't see the match, but I don't think a 100% healthy Stoll would major Costello... but at heavy you probably shouldn't get majored anyways. So probably a little bit of Costello being tougher than thought of, and Stoll watching it a little bit, idk. But I sure am glad to be a hawk fan and am excited to see how this team looks in March.

No, I coach & about the response I would expect from a thin skinned official.

Nah...it was a Gunther like match. No offense. No shooting. Young finally shot and Gunther scores off of it in OT. Gunther has great defense and tough to get through but Young will score more points.

This is why refs need to call double stalls and start opening matches up.
Chief that is why they wrestle

So at the end of a 3 minute period the score is 0 - 0 and neither guy has shot, what do you do? I have seen this many times. To me you call both, maybe more than once.
I agree. After 2 min of no shots there should be a double. At the end of 1 if no moreshots then another.

I won't ask specifically where, but only a ballpark area of where you're coaching. Unless you want to reveal yourself.

You seem to be a hard-nosed, aggressive asshole when it comes to wrestling. Possibly dirty, nothing wrong with that inside the rules. I feel like we may know each other.

What is the point of this comment? I have a ton of respect for guys like Perez who are not going to see time as a starter unless someone gets injured. He shows up and puts in the work anyway. He's not seeking glory. He's doing it for the love of the sport and to push himself to become better at something.

"Not at all trying to be an arse" but you come off as an arse.

The point is, or the question was, what is the value of a guy who is obviously outmatched being in the room? 100 percent agree he deserves the big balls trophy for sticking it out knowing there may not be a light at the end of the tunnel. Most would not do that. Calling me an arse is exactly why I don't stick around long on these boards - people jump to conclusions and name-calling when all I'm trying to do is understand it better. A few people posted about the value of people like Perez, and that was great feedback.

I took it as you meant it. You're trying to learn more about the sport and I didn't care for the attacks against you. Some are a little trigger happy on possible trolls or read things the wrong way. Keep posting it was only a misunderstanding.

Edit: Perez isn't wrestling after he leaves college, but he's rolled with legends, hangs out with Gable, getting his degree and will have "I wrestled at Iowa" on his resume.

My thoughts from right up front.
125: As much as I hate to say it let Lee red shirt. I was extremely happy with Stick. Long and explosive kinda reminded me of McDonough. Obviously has a ways to go to get to that status but similar for sure.
133: I am so glad the ref gave Glynn the 2!! I thought he earned the win. I think he will score more points for us vs. Laux.
141: I would not have a problem starting any of the 3. Turk is explosive, Murin is going to be tough to keep on the bench next year and Happel is closer to both than most give him credit for.
149: typical Sorensen match scoring when he has to. Lugo was close to scoring early but could quite finish. I really like Brandon and future looks good with Lugo.
157: I can't explain how he does it but Kem finishes shots half the wrestlers in the country can't. A lot of people will laugh this off but he is our best shot at a Champ this year.
165: What was Moody trying to prove with the trips from behind. Had to chuckle a bit when he lost. Neither one of these 2 hold a candle to the Bull.
174: Complain all you want about these two. Young will score more points just that Gunther know how to play the defense game. I was hoping for more offense from Young but remember Gunther has Sorensen like defense. Young will be fine guys what till after Midlands and you will see what I am talking about.
184: pass until PD3 gets rolling
197: I really like Warner by the end of the year he could be 2 or 3 in the nation but leave the shirt on let him bulk up a little bit and make a serious run at a title. Wilcke had the best takedown of the day with that sick Duck. I like Cash a lot and he will be fine 197 is weak outside of top 2.
Hwt: Stoll was the aggressor. Very hard to finish on a guy that was just trying to keep it close similar to 174lb match. Stoll looked like he was trying a couple of new ties also.

Star said Lee and The Bull both could have went today but no reason to make the minor tweak of The Bulls injury worse or force Spencer into a bad spot and take a chance at getting hurt again.

Costello MO is always counter offense against guys better then him. No big surprise in this score from these two. I would be surprise if he would be .500 this year if a starter.

Plus, he knows better then to go down against Stoll
