DeVries NOT a candidate for Iowa job. Ben McCollum the next Iowa HC?

I wonder if the issue could be Iowa’s unwillingness to contribute a greater portion of its rev share to MBB. And I think this could be a mistake.

I’ve heard elsewhere that Indiana plans to take the average amount given to MBB by other B1G schools, and then double it. Iowa probably can’t do that, but until we grow NIL, it seems prudent to bump that number up a bit.

Of course, the problem is where that money comes from. It can’t be football. It can’t be WBB. Probably not wrestling (unless that sport has enough resources coming I from other places.) So honestly, it’s probably got to be baseball (or any other sport that would be getting a share). And that would hurt the baseball program significantly. But if you want to rebuild your MBB program — which actually has a chance to produce revenue — I think you’ve got to do it.

Things look bleak unless there is some big money on sidelines. That would be true regardless of who is coach.

In Iowa's case, What is point in paying a coach $4 million and then only have $2.5 million for NIL? These escalating coaching salaries make no sense.

Remember, Beth was a college soccer player. She's going to spend NIL to build a championship soccer program! lol

B. Mac is the only answer here. Iowa will not get a big name coach due to NIL. Mac has built championship teams with little or zero NIL in Division II. He's the guy, bank on it.
The problem is the WVU AD is the one that hired BM at NW MO St. We could be in trouble there too..,

IU fans not happy with their choice.
They wouldn't be happy if Red Auerbach was resurrected as their next coach.

Ryan Bowen:

Post-playing career

[edit]
Shortly after retiring from the NBA, Ryan returned to Iowa City to become the video coordinator for the University of Iowa shortly after Fran McCaffery took over.[8] After spending a year plus in Iowa City working for the Hawkeyes, Ryan was hired as an assistant coach by the Denver Nuggets in December 2011. On August 21, 2013, Bowen was hired as an assistant coach and assistant director of player development by the Sacramento Kings.[9] In July 2015, Bowen returned to the Denver Nuggets as an assistant following Denver's hire of Michael Malone as the head coach; he worked for Malone in Sacramento. Bowen coached the Denver Nuggets 2022 Summer League team.[10] Bowen won his first NBA championship in 2023 when the Nuggets defeated the Miami Heat in 5 games.

Got this elsewhere - who knows whats real w all this lol....

Sources close to Devries said Iowa was his dream job and that he was worried about our NIL
Since it looks like we aren’t getting him it’s a reflag for the program.
Either he doesn’t like who’s in charge ( Beth ) or the NIL and money isn’t there , or both.
To lose out on a guy who’s dream job is Iowa shows our NIL is weak and it’s not looking good and/or BG was playing with her food at the dinner table. If we get Ben and I hope we do but it’s definitely a red flag when we can’t land a coach who’s dream job was to be here

Some good takes I think...

So Devries was IUs 5th or 6th choice according to this.

Interesting.

Makes me wonder if McCollum was higher on their list and he turned them down.

Then they panicked and paid a guy with 0 tournament wins 7 mil a year lol.

If Iowa gets McCollum this whole thing worked in their favor, if not it's a disaster.

Huggins' age has been discussed, but he IS a tough customer.
Hire him as say a 2 year interim.
That way we could build the Swarm/NIL up enough to hire a (current) big name.

I am sure McCollum is a great coach, but competing with D2 players in the MVC is different than the Big Ten.

I do not see a big difference between BM and DD. But if DD reason for not coming is because of the NIL bank, how is BM going to recruit with a small bank compared to other schools. It is going to be a new recruiting world for BM at Iowa. I hope he is successful if he gets the job and will support him.

Whoever it is we need to give them a chance. Any choice is a roll of the dice anymore with NIL and transfer portal.
McCollum brought DII athletes with him and not only beat teams in The Valley but they beat Miami, Fl, Vanderbilt, Kansas State. So, what he did with DII athletes is pretty remarkable.

You’ll need to throw in a large, University-owned SUV, a driver, and a golf cart with driver. Had all of these at WVU, and still insisted on driving himself, in the U’s vehicle, and a DUI. The golf cart? It was to get him up the hill to the stadium. No sheet…saw it with my own eyes.

With that said, I love how the guy loves his players. Great ball coach. But hard pass.

How does Indiana come up with $7 million/yr for Devries, pay off WVU for the buyout, buyout Woodson ( they had just given a pay raise the year before, and pay off all the other coaches the've fired in last 20 years?

Well, she is the athletic Director. When she got the job, much was said about her ability to navigate the new landscape. Translation: NIL. If she fired Fran without a solid plan to shore up bball’s NIL to lure a new coach it’s a major fail.
I agree but there is NO proof that this has happened so everyone needs to stop speculating. There is a good chance that some of these coaches don't want to come to Iowa. She has been our AD for just a year. How was she going to help with NIL with a bad MBB coach. How much is our total NIL for all sports? I am guessing that nobody knows that answer. Just stop ripping on her without knowing all of the facts.
