DeVries NOT a candidate for Iowa job. Ben McCollum the next Iowa HC?

Well, she is the athletic Director. When she got the job, much was said about her ability to navigate the new landscape. Translation: NIL. If she fired Fran without a solid plan to shore up bball’s NIL to lure a new coach it’s a major fail.
I agree but there is NO proof that this has happened so everyone needs to stop speculating. There is a good chance that some of these coaches don't want to come to Iowa. She has been our AD for just a year. How was she going to help with NIL with a bad MBB coach. How much is our total NIL for all sports? I am guessing that nobody knows that answer. Just stop ripping on her without knowing all of the facts.

You’ll need to throw in a large, University-owned SUV, a driver, and a golf cart with driver. Had all of these at WVU, and still insisted on driving himself, in the U’s vehicle, and a DUI. The golf cart? It was to get him up the hill to the stadium. No sheet…saw it with my own eyes.

With that said, I love how the guy loves his players. Great ball coach. But hard pass.
Poop. Here I thought I had a brilliant idea.

It was reported by Norlander or one of those types. Apparently it was:

Brad Stevens
Scott Drew
TJ Otz
Dusty May
all long shots.

Stevens isn't going back to college bball and recruiting from a Celtics front office job
Drew...maybe but being from Indiana he knows how unrealistic IU fans can be
Otz has a good gig. They give you a statue if you're over .500 in Ames
May? Moving within the conference is always tricky. Why go from Michigan to Indiana? Michigan has plenty of money.

Agreed. And DeVries is a really good coach but $5 million/year tells me they were desperate because his resume likely doesn’t warrant that.

I'm not ripping on her. Just pointing out that it was emphasized how much more savvy she would be than Barta (not a huge challenge) when it came to NIL and the new framework. If you were planning Fran's dismissal, getting the NIL thing squared away would be a huge priority as you know every candidate is going to ask "What kind of resources will I have to get the players I need". "We're working on it" isn't what a top candidate wants to hear.

You're right, we don't know what's said behind the scenes. Knowing Indiana they're throwing everything at basketball and bent over for DD. A previous poster with supposed connections to Applington-Parkersburg made it sound like Beth has a comprehensive plan. We could still end up with a really good hire. I'll believe she can get it done until/unless she doesn't. We'll know in a week or two.

I recall Hayden's press conference upon accepting the Iowa job. "I've been promised I'll have everything I need to build a winning program". Our next basketball coach will be expecting the same.

Ouch. Hurts mostly because he was born and raised here and his brother is a legend. As always I wish the worst for Indiana basketball.

can't wait to hear the terms of his contract.

Bill Self is #1 at $8.8M ($23M buyout).

Mike Woodson was making $4.2M.

Feel bad for WVU fans.

And Iowa's $1.5M NIL just doesn't cut it.

And notice "fan support" in this announcement.

Since I’ve learned more about McCollum I’ve been impressed by him. To the point I was good with him or DD being the guy. Now that it’s down to McCollum, one thing I’d like to emphasize about him is he’s done more with less for a long time. In this time where Iowa can’t hang with the big money schools, doing more with less will need to be the watch words for Iowa basketball. And as doing more comes true, the money will increase as fan interest increases. And then Iowa can do more with more. So, go get McCollum and let’s watch him start this thing up again.

What I don't get is everyone is blaming the NIL. Iowa was 15 out of 16 B10 teams in coach's salary this year. How can they expect the fans to invest when they won't invest themselves?

It would be interesting to know what Beth offered per year and if it even came close to what IU offered. Also, the years of the contract and the buy out......

And they have been talking about a Carver renovation for years; Iowa MBB is on the back burner when it comes to priority

Is he a guy who can energize donors and the fan base where it leads to a larger NIL, a full arena for games, and investments in the program (Carver renovation, etc)?

The more I read about this, the more it becomes clear that the issue is not that the Iowa offer was pathetically bad, it’s that the Indiana offer was incredibly generous.

Indiana is a basketball school, and they are going all-in to return their program to its former glory. That includes a huge salary for their head coach, a robust NIL program, and a pledge to double the percent of rev share going to MBB, compared to other B1G schools.

That doesn’t mean the Iowa offer was bad. It just wasn’t as good. I believe Iowa is offering a competitive salary package, and has a foundation in place to improve the MBB NIL. Rev share will help as well, especially compared to non-B1G teams.

As a coach, I think the Indiana offer just turned out to be something DD couldn’t say no to. It’s always going to be hard for Iowa to compete against the blue-bloods for coaches. But compared to other mid-tier programs, there’s no reason to believe we can’t be competitive.

So, let’s go get McCollum. At the end of the day, he could be the best possible person for the job anyway. And if not, we go find the next guy. There’s lots of good coaches out there.

They completely overpaid and panicked with DD and I’m thrilled. I’ve wanted McCollum the entire time and it’s time to go get him.

Good post.

There's 2 pieces to how players will get paid next season:

(1) NIL from collectives, which IU spent $5M this past season

(2) Revenue Sharing pmts from the school. Most schools were expected to spend $3.5M on MBB. So, IU is going to spend $7.0M?

That would add up to $12M (or more) for IU's 13 scholarship players.

Crazy.

Apparently for DD and McCollum this is “the dream job” I want whoever wants to actually lead this program and take it to the next level.
