DeVries NOT a candidate for Iowa job. Ben McCollum the next Iowa HC?

Yeah it just sucks that the University of Iowa is so poor! No money going there.
It really kind of is. It's not a huge state school (compared to the mammoth publics like OSU, PSU, Mich, etc) and it doesn't have a large or particularly rich fanbase. It doesn't even have a "sugardaddy" like ISU does, and we're damn lucky Warren Buffett isn't Nebraska's Phil Knight.

Wow; that's a million short of what other high major schools will be paying.

No wonder DeVries said thanks but no thanks.
I wonder what happens to the $4M to $6M Iowa was apparently prepared to spend to buy DD out of his contract.

If that was university money, you could offer some of it to McCollum (or someone else) as a signing bonus.
If it's booster money, you could throw it at NIL.

eventually some money is going to have to go to the Carver renovation

It would be nice but doesn't really work that way though. They don't actually have the money they had a commitment from a booster to provide it. They may have only been willing to spend that kind of money for DeVries and be unwilling to redirect it to the NIL pot for another guy. All of the donations get earmarked for specific things, she doesn't just get a big pot of donor money for whatever she wants to do.

Scott always has the numbers.

full text of tweet:

Let's be analytical.

History: WVU 31 NCAAs, 2 FFs; Iowa 29 NCAAs, 3 FFs (a wash)

Final AP polls: WVU 19; Iowa 21 (a wash)

Facilities: WVU's arena is 15 years older, Iowa has a renovation planned. Its $50m practice facility is about a decade old.

MBB rev: WVU $13.28m; Iowa $13.86m

NIL: WVU with an advantage today

Does Iowa want fans to donate to the University or the Swarm or both? Guessing both, but, NIL needs to be funded by a few deep pockets and not small monthly amounts.
Iowa needs a GM that can manage NIL and donations to the University. Getting mens basketball attendance back up will help. Removing Fran from the equation should help some with attendance.
A quality coach that can utilize revenue sharing and the NIL amount available is what Iowa needs. Fran had just ran its course and he was not willing to adapt his style or recruiting.

the small monthly amounts are used to pay players when they volunteer

the bigger deals are funded by the boosters

and the above added up to $1.5M in payments, dead last in the B1G

At Iowa womens bball will get much more of the cut then this...

But they can't cut from Iowa MBB....right?

The final rev share numbers will be interesting, Not saying anything I have read on the internet is 100% accurate but. quick google search shows Iowa’s WBB program currently generates more revenue than the MBB program. The WBB has the opportunity to continue to be a major player in the Big and on the National stage, The men, Likely not so much even with coaching change.

Serious question. As a B1G member, Iowa literally HAS to field a MBB team, correct? They can't just wave the white flag and tell Tony P. they're dropping the sport due to lack of success, $, or interest.

Because I'm getting the vibe that more than a few Iowa fans would be perfectly happy with folding the program and riding the WBB pony.

I appreciate your response. You are, of course, correct.

That said, for whatever booster was willing to ante up the cash for the buyout, it might be worthwhile to sweet talk them into considering an infusion of cash into the MBB NIL. No guarantees they would do it, but you could ask.

I am not in favor of cutting the men’s program, What makes it very difficult is Iowa simply does not currently have the resources to elevate the men’s program to the upper echelon. Iowa WBB had a magic genie named Caitlin Clark that changed the dynamics for the program, The WBB program is now in on the best of the best on the recruiting front. Do you invest in that momentum or do you put as much emphasis on fixing the men’s program as you possibly can. That is why I think the final rev share numbers will be interesting.

That's a tough, tough question there. The current popularity of WBB is unprecedented, thanks in no small part to CC22.

I will say this, if CC went to UConn or Notre Dame, WBB would still be a bigger deal, but Iowa would be investing more heavily in men's.

I get that, Iowa needs the bigger deals. You still need to have the right coach in place. Indiana had a good NIL for this past season and still didn't make the tournament and got rid of their coach.
The players are in control now and it is a different world. Expecting fans to blindly give money is tough. Iowa needs to focus more on football anyway, basketball is not going to make a big difference anyway.
Sounds like Beth is starting to figure out there needs to be a GM type for revenue sharing and NIL.
I just think it is a little disingenuous to tell Iowa fans that they needs to give more to the Swarm when there is not much faith in the prior coach. As an Iowa fan, I certainly wouldn't want to give a lot of money for Freeman to stay another year.
West Virginia fans are calling out Tucker Devries for shutting it down and playing 8 games while getting 1 million in NIL per their statements.
The Proctor situation in football didn't help.
