Not particularly a Hlas fan, but glad someone is putting that message out there.
Ben McC has been my first choice for a while. Still hoping he's an option.
But even if they don't get him there are plenty of other lower level D1 guys who would be good choices.
Contrary to what I've seen repeatedly expressed, this isn't a do or die call that the AD absolutely has to make perfectly or U of I athletics implodes. It's a big decision, certainly. But any change at this point was going to bring more initial interest than where men's bball was and was heading. And if it doesn't go reasonably well, try again in a few years.
It might not go well, but how great a story would it be if the new guy takes a group of lesser known players/cast offs/former malcontents to the Sweet 16?
And to think Iowa was also apparently willing to pay that. And yet you still have fans questioning the school's commitment to MBB.
Im not sure Iowa was willing to pay it, which is smart, **** that. I think it's been McCollum as the top guy for months for Iowa.
I would guess Tucker would want another million to follow his dad and play for Iowa. That alone would be 1/3 of Iowa's NIL fund. Pass on all these bloated amounts.
I think McCollum would be really good for Iowa basketball. He knows how to develop a program. He can take scrap heap players and make them competitive. Watching his team play, while his offense is deliberate and takes the shot clock down, it's not due to a lot of standing around or aimlessly dribbling. There is a lot of movement, a lot of passing, and many shots come off of cuts from the baseline or wings. It's not much desperation 3s because they ran out of time. It's in some ways like Phil Parker's defense. Eventually, you're going to make a mistake and we're going to take advantage of it. However, rather than it being on defense, it's on offense, i.e., you're not going to be able to cover my guys the whole shot clock and we'll end up getting good looks. That's sort of my take on watching his team play. That could be good for Iowa. It will matter that they get better talent, as the level of talent week after week will be better, but the same style can work obviously with better players. I hope they get him. This delay seems like something is afoot with him.

Personally, I think all the handwringing over NIL from the chicken littles is overblown.
Is it necessary? Absolutely ! Does Iowa need a bloated NIL budget to field a competitive team? No, and I’ll tell you why.
There are a LOT of good basketball players out there. And there are also a lot at the mid major level who can play at the P-4 level. Many players who enter the portal thinking they are going to get big $$ at a P-4 school won’t. They will end up with less than they think, play at a mid major, or won’t even get a scholarship offer anywhere.
There are examples out there of schools who are paying a lot of money for basketball/football players and getting little return on their investment. Paying top dollar is no guarantee of winning championships. And do Hawkeye fans really want the University to lay out millions for a couple of players who only care about the money, and will bolt to another school who will pay more the first chance they get (and even suffer a season ending “injury” or “check out” before the season is over)? I don’t think so.
There are plenty of kids fully capable of playing competitive P-4 basketball out there, that will not cost an arm and a leg. WITH THE RIGHT COACH, Iowa could assemble a team capable of consistently making the NCAA tournament, as well as some Sweet 16’s (or even better). The key is having a coach who not only can identify these players, but can enable them to reach their full potential. There are men out there who can do this (no, I don’t know who they are….that’s Beth’s job, although I think McCollum is one of them), and would be willing to come to Iowa.
Iowa does need NIL money. But not as much as some seem to think.
