I hope I don't put a wrestling curse on Ayala by posting this but damn, he certainly looked to take a significant jump from the McKee match(s). Maybe it's a style thing similar to Spencer and Piccininni or maybe it was a mental breakthrough but the freshman laps in concentration appeared to be addressed and he looked like a man on mission, take no prisoners Iowa wrestling style attitude. I'm sure he'll still experience growing pains, as did Spencer his Freshman and Sophomore years but his performance against Purdue certainly put a smile on my face.

I’m admittedly playing Devil’s Advocate here but the level of competition just wasn’t as strong on Sunday. It was a better match up. Heck of a win and this is in no way an attempt to degrade it.

McKee losing to DeAugustino of Northwestern definitely helps Drake in the seeding for the Big Tens.

If he wins out, he is looking at the two seed.

Having said that, FloWrestling only had Schroeder ranked 9th in last weeks rankings.

this coming weekend he with have UR-DeAugustino (NW) and 21-Cardani (IL)

The following weekend will be 11-Heinselman (OSU)

Then the big matchup with PSU and Hildebrandt.

Then ranked matches against 12-Barnett (WI); 23-Cronin (NEB) and 7-Mastrogiivanni (OSU)

He can probably pull a good seed if he runs the table. If not, it will be a dog fight for a medal position on the stand.

Huh? 125 just has a ton of parity in the Big 10. Remember McKee got 8th at B1G's last year, and Schroder got 2nd. McKee did have a great NCAA tournament though.

Certainly, matchups at this stage are very important.

I don't think Purdue was as strong as Minn. Ayala can out slick lots of em, but not out muscle anyone yet. That will come I guess.

Getting overpowered by Minn was probably a very good learning experience. Will pay divivdends down the road.

"If he runs the table" is probably a big if. That's a tough stretch. Although think I read that Cronin may be out for the year.

It looked to me like Drake tried to slow it down and better position himself defensively against Purdue. He left himself open and paid the price against McKee. McKee and Schroeder are both good experienced Wrestler's, losing to either is no shame for a true freshman, and beating either one is a good thing.

You wrestle for Iowa in the Big Ten you're going to meet ranked Wrestler's often, that's what you sign up for. Drake is 0-3 against McKee but it's not an insermountable hill to climb. He'll take some lumps along the way I believe, just improve as you go and see what happens.

Yeah, we must remember Patrick Glory defeated Devin 13-0 on 12/4.

Did the last couple battles with Ayala run down McKee? Maybe coincidence but I always felt like anyone who had to beat Metcalf in an international tourney struggled the next round. I always felt like the guy that beat the guy that beat Metcalf owed Metcalf a tip of the hat.

it was a good win for him.... confidence builder..... he’s going to be a good one
I think he gets better over the course of the season and knocks Mckee off eventually..... but I wear black and gold glasses.....

McKee won head to head last year and finished 3rd at the NCAAs. I also consider McKee a stronger wrestler.

Just my take. It’s ok to disagree. It will all play out.

What fantasy land do you live in where third is ranked above fif.

Schroeder is a second tier guy with the first tier being Suriano, Vito, Glory, and Courtney. So the real question is whether Ayala belongs in that second tier or as a top ten guy right now. I think he will be 5th-Rd12 this year having trouble with big physical guys at the weight. If he can finish on a regular basis, he's an AA.

So you’re saying the second tier is 5-10+ right? If so, why wouldn’t Ayala be in the second tier?

And I’m not sure Courtney belongs in the same tier as Suriano, Vito and Glory.

Without Spencer 125 has quite a lot of parody at the weight outside of Vito and Glory (if he can make weight). Their most recent head to head had McKee winning a close one vs Schroeder. In 2020 Schroeder won by tech fall over McKee. Most of these veteran 125lbers are who they are, hopefully we see Drake continue to progress and learn consistency.

We would expect nothing less Mr Spooner

Not much parody, but a lot of parity. 😏

no he just blew his match with deaugustino. was up 6-2 with rt in the 3rd, threw himself to his back and then got turned trying to roll around late to escape.

With Spencer out Suriano easily wins 125 imo
I don’t think he easily beats Arujau who beat him in freestyle. IIRC they split in folkstyle about 10 years ago:/ Neither is dominant on top so the freestyle win for Arujau might hold the most water. It was close and getting dated at this point as well. I’d consider him the favorite but not in the same way Spencer was.

I'd say a slower pace favors Suriano.
