125 Lee has four time National Champ written all over him ... UNLEASH HIM NOW
133 Still a problem ... Glynn the rest of the way?
141 Happel looks like the guy for the rest of the season
149/157 Sorensen and Kemerer are Dominating
165 Marinelli versus Lewis once again tomorrow
174 I still think in the short or long run Young will serve the Hawks better than Gunther ... like them both, but Youngs offence is much better
184 Bowman has impressed me all year, what a story for an Iowa kid
197 Oh boy, Warner versus Wilcke right off the bat ... that match should be interesting
Hwt Stoll is on a mission of conquest and destroy ... man, he has really looked good on the mat

Seven wrestlers into the semi-finals and eight more still wrestling in the consolations ... not a bad day for Mr Brands Hawkeye wrestling team. Go Hawks!!!

We are not winning it this year no matter who wrestles. That said if Lee wants to go then let him. Glynn vs Laux has not ben settled. Glynn still going but lost to same Illinois kid Laux lost to before. Nothing done to really separate yet and honestly it does not matter, neither is a threat to AA, not sure qualifying is a given, we need help here going forward.. Happel in the lead but his slowness magnifed vs Bucknell. Turk is quicker but not good on bottom, not really a great rider either. Kind of a 1 trick pony with the double from distance and it is not a high % trick. Murin has the best future IMO, is quick and scrappy, just a bit small this year. Guther battles, Young has more potential to score but he needs to get bigger. Bowman is quick and good length, if he had the confidence some of the others have he would be even better.

And how does Downey and his appearance at Iowa shake things up? I Iike this team a lot with Lee at 125, the obvious at 149 & 157, Marinelli at 165, Downey at 184, Wilcke at 197 & the beast at Hwt. Question marks at 133, 141 & 174. IF Murin could make the cut to 133, Happel continues to get better at 141 (he has it in his bloodlines) and Young or Gunther could rise to the challenge, the Hawks do have a chance come NCCA time ... dim, but not there is hope. Go Hawks!!!

Weren't people saying Seth Gross was slow a couple years ago?

My dumb thought:

We have 3 potential starters already eliminated from a weak Midlands field in Stickley (but seriously Lee gets freed after this weekend), Laux, and Turk. Not good.
Not liking the results from those above mentioned wrestlers, outside of the guy called Spencer Lee. I still think there is potential in Happel at 141. No hope at 133, unless Murin makes the cut. Sometimes, after all the glory years as a Hawk wrestling fan, it's tough to deal with these issues today. I have not given up hope for victory this year by any means. Go Hawks!!!

Tough trade off with Clark at 133 for a few years. If Gross was willing to ride the pine until his SR season it could have been good this year. Gross was not that impressive at 141

Gross is a junior this year I believe. He would be fine at 141 if that light bulb had gone off at Iowa. He was Rd of 12 and starting to hit his stride his RS Freshman year. It's not just about the weight cut...kid entered a different zone summer before last when he made a freestyle world team I believe.

Watching him today just destroy people was so f***ing exciting! As a life long hawks fan I don't think I've been this excited to watch Iowa wrestling since maybe Tom came home. I've watched Spencer for about the last 5 years and this is the best Spencer Lee I've ever seen! He looked amazing in the 14,15 and 16 World Championships but, DAMN!!! TnT have him on another planet. I hate to bring this up but, Teasdale has to be wondering if TnT aren't a better fit for him? I mean PSU has no one in there room but Nico and after the Gilman shellacking, I wonder if he dares to show his face in PSU room.

That event by Gross and his team members was crazy dumb. I know for a fact that you and I could have been in that same situation - except that some smarter people prevailed.

I’ve been guilty of many transgressions in my 55 years but having sticky fingers was never one of them.

LOL I’m really curious about the details of the smarter heads prevailing amongst the nuckleheads we associated with.

I agree simply from the standpoint that I can't watch another meet where we get piss pounded at 125. Wrestle Lee
To free or not to free, that is the question. It’s a question I don’t think we can answer, as much as I would love to feed the beast this year its a Lee and Brands call based on what they know (and we mere mortals do not)
Whenever he is free I’m damn glad it will be in Black. :D

Let’s see what Lee does against Suriano. Don’t want him to reinjure knee. Top guys going to be longer matches with more strain on knee.

From Homer "The Iliad & The Odyssey", Apollo the Son of Zeus, like those two famous characters in past time, Spencer and his father will have a say in this matter. Not a bad analogy from a dumb former Iowa wrestler. Spencer Lee reminds me of Dan Gable, and might be better (never thought I would ever say that in my lifetime). I think Tom unleashes Mr Lee after the Midlands, with his father's blessings. Go Hawks!!!

Wain a mina.... I thought Mike was quoting Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Are you mixing your Literary giants or am I missing something?

I can't wait for that matchup. Lee will Destroy that Penn State traitor. There will indeed be some interesting matchups tomorrow. Go Hawks!!!

I would think that Spencer has been going full matches against CC, TG and JD for awhile now! I don't think he would be wrestling if he wasn't. I know it's not in a tournament or dual setting but, those three compete for every position and point.

Take the stealing out of it. How about getting hammered and doing stupid, potentially illegal or destructive thing?

I'm gonna go ahead and raise my hand.

Add Matt McDonough to that list. Spencer is special, ask any one of them.

I keep on moving the goal posts on Lee...he looked great at UNI but...let's see how he does against a guy like Sean Russell...now its Bresser and than Suriano. Bresser because he just wrestled a close one against Fix. Quite frankly, I would be happy if he just showed up in an Iowa singlet tomorrow night...Damn the Topedos.

That would hurt the Iowa - unattached guys, and they might not be top ten this tournament anymore if that happens.

If Lee wins it all and does so convincingly, the knee feels great after, I don’t think it leaves a question on what to do.

Would that not be completely awesome — to see him come out for the finals in black and gold? No press conferences to explain the plan . . . No interviews. . . Just walks out in that legendary singlet and gets after it. Would be a nice way to make the announcement!

The way Lee is wrestling it would be a travesty to tell him “good work son, now watch from the sidelines until November.”

I’m like 70% pull the redshirt. The 30% is the whole 9 months removed from knee surgery thing. Having trouble getting over the thought of him wrestling 4 full seasons without the bulky knee brace. It’s an imperfect thought I know as so many other things can happen in 4-5 years.

Also, are we sure he’s better than Jay Schworm? Lol @banbasketball (Did he get banned?)

If he beats Suriano close, hedge on the RS. If he clearly beats him and there is no question about the W gonna be hard to keep the shirt on I would think.

I also think of this in 4x potential. A kid with his his recent injury history, might want that RS available for down the road should he need it.

If he tears up Bresser, where Fix was a lot closer, the anticipation for tonight will be taylor vs Dake at the scuffle level.

This is my thought process in Lee's case. Like you said, if & how he beats Suriano will cement my opinion. I'd really like to see how he fares in a grind em out 7 min match. My gut tells me will see that today.

I'd bet money that he'll bonus Suriano. The knee won't be getting re-injured, since guys won't have many chances to even touch the knee, except when trying to counter his attacks.

How far along was the season when McIlravy took off the shirt? Sorry, my memories are vague of that year.
