Tom Brands addresses the rumors: Kemerer at 174 is far from done deal; Here is a PROJECTED LINEUP

Gable somehow managed to get Troy Steiner, Lincoln Mac, and Terry Steiner into 3 different weight classes in the same year in order to put the team into better contention to win a title. He didn't say, "Lincoln and Troy are both 142-pounders, but it will work itself out."

I understand your point but to be fair, that was back in the days when rules on cutting weight were much more lenient.

Tom has tightened up his recruiting game in response to Cael and Ryan. That's great, but he had the lead in 2010. That shows he's not infallible, but also shows he learns from his mistakes. I feel good about our recruiting trajectory for the first time in years.

He has yet to show that he's tightened up his strategy on allocating dollars efficiently across weight classes and having a plan for allocating wrestlers efficiently across weights. His philosophy has been "It will work itself out." That's true, if winning NCAA titles doesn't matter. Not trying to be a dick--the proof is in the pudding.

We had a logjam at 149 with Sorensen, Grothus, and Cooper that resulted in a weak 141 and 157 at NCAA time. We had PD3 floating mysteriously between 184 and 197, resulting in Wilcke not being at his optimal weight at NCAAs. (Fine to blame 75% of that on PD3.) We had 3 top-20 guys at 141 with a giant gaping hole at 133.

We all know the article is coach-speak, we all know Tom is not going to commit to anything now, no one really expects otherwise.

But to trust that he has a plan and just isn't telling us is inconsistent with the data we've seen over the past 7 years. If he does, great! Some of us are skeptical until we see the evidence. But peace. Nobody needs to call anybody names over it. We're far ahead of where we were a few short years ago regardless. It's going to be a great season.

Sorry to sound like a broken record, especially since I think you've been a strong advocate of getting highly ranked guys as a top priority.

I don't see fitting Steiners and Lincoln into different weight classes vs a logjam at 149 with Sorensen, Grothus and Cooper or the PD3/Wilcke as the primary issue.

Grothus was not in the top 100, and in one ranking was #16 in his weight class. Cooper was a transfer with only 2 years of eligibility. Sorensen was not a top 20 guy, and #5 at his weight. Wilcke was #86 in his recruit year, and #9 at his weight class. PD3 was always a roll of the dice with only potentially 1 year of eligibility.

Lincoln, on the other hand was a true blue ribbon recruit, and I think Steiners were pretty elite as well (maybe Troy > Terry).

So it seems to me, the primary issue was not Brands juggling these guys inefficiently, it was more working with HS recruits that were a step or two behind what PSU was bringing in.

The allocation of dollars efficiently is potentially a problem. But for me, it is a huge unknown, and possibly a critical factor with regards to how PSU is able to grab so many top 10 or top 20 guys most every year, while Iowa gets a few now and then, and has to worry about "we don't have enough scholly money."

Brands and co do seem to have gotten religion on going after some really elite guys, which paid off nicely with Lee. But juggling the $ with scholly limits and competing against other schools who may not play by the same rules.... that is problematic.

This...what they see is lack of planning I see as holes. Limiting factors vs coaching shortfall.

Also, it makes me laugh to think that some don't believe a bunch of wrestling guys (the coaches) do not sit in the office and kick around their best lineup obsessively...like we do on here. So much to do with coaching and managing. Most bosses that hire folks will give the official line that the job is open for qualified folks to compete...may the best person win. However, most have a good idea of who that person is going to be...they just can't say it out loud to the folks in their workplace...it shows favoritism and hurts morale.
I have it on good authority that the coaches fire up WrestleStat and go to the eligibility breakdown page for Iowa...

;)

After reading the article about Brands's comments, I'm surprised so many seem unable to see his plan for next year. It's there. But he, me, and you know that shit happens. Some want him to predict the unpredictable and guarantee the unguaranteeable. He's too experienced to give a layup to future bitchers.

Things look good.

Good to see you around here again Squibs.. Hope things are well out on the best coast!

Certain posters burn a ton of energy in their attempts to be negative.

Im not sure your correct about the top 4 Nolf, Hidlay, Kem ,Panteleo Deakin for this year or
174 Hall, Kem , Amine ,Kutler ? If Z goes up
Was talking about this past year, not this next one, but imo 174 is better either year. And I have Zahid at 174 until we see otherwise, I’ve seen no evidence of indication he’s going up so far. And Deakin didn’t even AA this past year.

174
Zahid -3rd and 1st in 2 NCAAs, Junior World silver
Mark Hall - 1st and 2nd in 2 NCAAs, 2 time Junior World Champ, Cadet World champ
Myles Amine - 2 top 4 finishes in 2 NCAAs
Bo Jordan - 4 time AA

Things are great here. Weather is knock-down gorgeous....but don't come...40 million is enough. Where U?

I’m the fartist formerly known as Fossyronjon... We got familiar back in 2003 with nationals tix in KC... A trip I often try to forget. Lol. Still here in Gods country with no plans on leaving.

I do remember 03. We took a bath...pre-Brands I should remind some. If I remember, I negotiated through your mother...fossyronjon had a sinister ring, but mom's can be trusted.

Indeed. You wanted a mediator and trusting soul to ensure the transaction so I called in the most trusting person I know to handle shit. That was 15 years ago... Time flys when you’re getting old.

*Devil's advocate
If Iowa's starting QB decided this spring to play receiver instead would the coaches not speak to that when interviewed? If the star cornerback was moving to offense would coaches not acknowledge it when asked?

Jacksonville Jaguars' coaches wouldn't say what positions their offensive line would be during spring/summer practice...they mixed them up during open practice.

With Young at 57, I think the lineup has legit potential to have 10 AAs. Near AA lock at 125, 133, 165, 174, 197, and hwt. And strong AA potential at 141, 157, 184

I think Cash will be a lot better at 184 than 197.

I understand the concern with weight classes not working out or being optimal as that has definitely been a big problem in the past, however it is beginning to look like this coming season may be the first season with no holes in a long time.

All things considered, Brands has done a great job with filling the weights recently. Wrestling has to be the most difficult sports to recruit for by far. You have to recruit kids who are 16-17 and hope that they end up growing into the weight class that you're recruiting them for. And with the way D1 wrestling currently works in that top P4P recruits is the most important factor for team success, you can't afford to miss or have too much overlap, especially with only 10 scholarships.

Happened to work out near perfectly to get Cassioppi to replace Stoll, Lugo to replace Sorensen, Lee to replace Gilman. And now adding Desanto to a weight that was going to be our biggest hole this coming season.

Things are looking good. Let's hope Young 57 and Kem 74 works out and this team will be in title contention.

I am very curious to see how Kem will perform up 2 weights. He is a wrestler who utilizes flexibility a lot. I suspect he'll do just fine, especially if the weight cut last season was strongly affecting his strength and endurance which seems to have been the case.

Folkstyle Nolf is a tougher out than Hall....I am good with that. Are we obligated to put a poll up on the New Kids on The Block site or do we just ask Bo as he is the resident expert of That is What They Do??

Tom has made many changes the last couple years after a thorough examination of the program. In re this topic, you can bet a lot of dough that there is a plan. However, having a plan and announcing it in June, does not necessarily have to happen. And too, having a plan and having it work out, is not 100%.

For us'n mortals, follow the breadcrumbs of what is happening or seen, you will be enlightened.

That said, I am merely hoping for the health of our guys this year and let the chips fall where they may. Healthy, I give us two chances in 5 to win with PSU getting the other 3. For us, every weight should do better except maybe 149 and 157 if Kem goes to 174.

I understand your point but to be fair, that was back in the days when rules on cutting weight were much more lenient.
True, but the timeframes about when these decisions are made is a factor as well.

I don't know when Gable made up his mind, but I assume he gave them a bit of a heads up and a running start. In season or not. That would for sure take longer these days, but we don't know when the seed was planted. The Steiner's were already good enough to be undersized a bit and still handle most folks.

All I care is that Brands has a plan. I believe he does now. I will say I think there has been times in the recent past he hasn't, so I can see the concern.

I also agree with not naming his lineup now in the press as it relates to the motivation of his wrestlers fighting for spots.

On the flip side why in the heck does M*, Brands, etc. have the back & forth on Twitter eluding to it, then be all secretive about it? That makes no sense to me.

They had a plan for Spencer. A lot of good reasons not to pull Spencer’s shirt...plus, Tom never wrestled true freshman. He proved that he is open to change when it warrants it plus the TnT took a huge risk.

Imo, what were these grand plans that was going to make Iowa better? Somebody cited Sorensen/Grothus but they were wrong.
Not sure you can give full credit to Brands for the Spencer plan. Everything he had said was that it was up to him (Spencer). We certainly can’t knock Brands with his handling of that situation though.

Some posters just do not like Brands period so no mater what he does or does not say or do is not going to sit well with them.
That is the immature counter blanket argument. Criticizing TB and liking TB are not mutually exclusive. I could tell you over and over that I think he is a great mat coach and a good person and a very motivated guy who cares about his wrestlers, but you just won’t accept that I think he isn’t as good as we need him to be in other areas. All coaches are like that and that can be worked around. I’ve suggested many tines that we hire a full-time recruiting coordinator to help TB. I’ve never suggested firing TB except to pose the question of—how long without a title before we make a change? 5 more years? 10 more years? Never? So I love Tom Brands, he is an icon. Not convinced we are “woke” on recruiting.

Has to be a different feel in the room from 125 to Heavy even to the staff. The possibility is a great motivator. I wouldn't put us at 2 of 5 on the probability scale, slightly lower , but in that range. I like what I see and am hopeful for a special season. Going to be an entertaining season I am sure with highs and lows....and the Cesspoolers standing on the ledges and calling for heads.
This seems like a team that with the right moment (Erickson pin of Z) COULD fight harder for the guy next to them. 5 champs is a tough mountain for any team to climb but it all starts when one guy looks across the mat and says F that guy...not today.

Five champs? Are you only fielding half a team or what?

And yes I know who graduated just speaking on the potential of the obstacle more over the POTENTIAL of the Hawks to not give a crap and make a move anyway.

I'll bet every Pokemon I've ever captured that you're wrong...

A rising senior going for his third NC in entirely dominant fashion who hasn’t lost a match except to injury in two years is better than Lee. It’s not a knock on Lee to say Jason Nolf is better, just as it’s not a knock on Zain to have said Kyle was better.

My son was recruited to a powerhouse wrestling high school to man a weight needed. It didn’t work last year, but we worked out it out today. Beginning of my boys being future hawks. I just picked any thread to throw out my excitement. Nebraska and ISU were all over him too as a freshman. Thanks for listening. Good times.

Good for you! And them! How many boys do you have? LOL
