Tom has tightened up his recruiting game in response to Cael and Ryan. That's great, but he had the lead in 2010. That shows he's not infallible, but also shows he learns from his mistakes. I feel good about our recruiting trajectory for the first time in years.
He has yet to show that he's tightened up his strategy on allocating dollars efficiently across weight classes and having a plan for allocating wrestlers efficiently across weights. His philosophy has been "It will work itself out." That's true, if winning NCAA titles doesn't matter. Not trying to be a dick--the proof is in the pudding.
We had a logjam at 149 with Sorensen, Grothus, and Cooper that resulted in a weak 141 and 157 at NCAA time. We had PD3 floating mysteriously between 184 and 197, resulting in Wilcke not being at his optimal weight at NCAAs. (Fine to blame 75% of that on PD3.) We had 3 top-20 guys at 141 with a giant gaping hole at 133.
Gable somehow managed to get Troy Steiner, Lincoln Mac, and Terry Steiner into 3 different weight classes in the same year in order to put the team into better contention to win a title. He didn't say, "Lincoln and Troy are both 142-pounders, but it will work itself out."
We all know the article is coach-speak, we all know Tom is not going to commit to anything now, no one really expects otherwise.
But to trust that he has a plan and just isn't telling us is inconsistent with the data we've seen over the past 7 years. If he does, great! Some of us are skeptical until we see the evidence. But peace. Nobody needs to call anybody names over it. We're far ahead of where we were a few short years ago regardless. It's going to be a great season.
