Fire Brands

DT would require a year, but yes. You would again be certifiable if you didn't give him the job when he walked off the podium after Paris. But that's also a year away.

Hire Casey. That's as simple as needs to be said. When that happens, he'll splinter the RTC, bringing in some of those guys. And having coached under/with Cael - you may not get the same exact magic - but you're getting the program run in the same manner. No more lack of development, no more Hawks faltering at the end of the season.
Those guys aren't leaving PSU. I think Taylor has a good thing going and I doubt Cunningham leaves.

I think most fans realize the thread title is an over reaction.
But, I think Brands does have to take a real hard look at his program, particularly the staff. Accolades matter.
You got two positions that are some of the most coveted positions in all college wrestling that are currently occupied by two great guys. But great guys don’t develop national and world champs.
Past champs do that.

We should have snatched up Tervel before nebbie did.
Perry is a wrestling savant. Sucks we lost him.
Need new blood.

So if they replace Brands they better win a bunch and right away.

Who is that coach. And this is coming from a guy thinking Brands could do a better job.
Doug Schwab has overachieved at UNI. Is that better than the Brands Bros.? It might be time to start considering some type of change. It seems PSU is continuing to distance themselves.

Over achieving? What have I missed. I know it’s only UNI, but he hasn’t blown things away

In my opinion, (and many others close to the program) it does. Edit: There is a reason Illinois went after him.

I would hope we could do better than Schwab. The good thing is we don’t need to because our program is in good hands. Our future when the Brands are ready to step aside just graduated. BAR NONE OTHERS

Okay. Are you a fan of Iowa wrestling or the Brands Bros.? Nobody knows Lee's future. You are just not willing to accept that our coaching needs to improve.

Illinois? That's not a very high bar. I am not knocking Schwab, just don't see how you think he has overachieved. What results are you looking at that indicate he has overachieved?
Do you want to go round and round over opinions? Illinois is a Big Ten job. Probably a Top 10 job nationally. Not a high bar? How close are you to people in collegiate wrestling? Schwab has a great reputation. I never said he is better than the Brands either.

Again. For the funding the program receives and their roster he does pretty darn good.
Aaaaah. New question…

I’m curious as to the ratio of dollars spent on wrestling programs compared to return on investment measured in points scored at Nationals?

IMHO, it would be what is expected. The more money spend the better the return.

We just won the title in 21. Had a team in 20 that I believe would of really put it to the rest of the field. We are in a solid second position this year. I have been watching Hawkeye wrestling since the Fieldhouse days. I can tell you that the only truly disappointing years were the last couple of Zalesky. That was horrid. If we can bring the Ferrari (dont know if I spelled it right) boys in and get a portal or two, we will be right there again next year. The kids in high school now, are and have been following Lee for the last few years. He has the ability to take over Caels spot with the big name recruits. We will rule supreme again soon. In short im a huge Iowa wrestling fan and im guessing I have been much longer than you.

Haha. So you are too emotional. BTW, I have had multiple meals with Gable that were by his choice. Barry Davis grabbed me after a couple of home duals and took me out on the mat to roll around. In my age, I was too good of friends with a ton of Iowa, ISU and UNI wrestlers. You are not making a decision on results. I used to love the Fieldhouse days as well. The Banachs.

I guess you can take what I say and decipher as you please. I know where we are. If you think a change such as Doug Schwab would bolster our program you have the right to think that. If he was sought after he would of been gone long before now.

It’s not a stupid question. You’re just a cult member unwilling to make decisions outside of what your leader has kept in his purview.

So plainly - How many more times does Iowa finish second before you believe tom should be replaced?

And it’s ok to say never if that’s your honest answer. But if so…

Blink 3 times if you’re in danger.
I’ll say it. NEVER. You can’t do better than TNT. You remind me of a Nebraska football fan the last 10-20 years. A spoiled brat that doesn’t realize the landscape of college wrestling has changed and we aren’t going to win 10 in a row just because we are Iowa. How many firings have they regretted to date? I like the upward trend in recruiting and hopefully we can make the landscape shift back a bit soon but firing Brands is just stupid.

You are reading what you want. Never said Brands should be replaced by Schwab. He would be on my shortlist if a replacement was needed. He was offered the Illinois job and turned it down. He is very happy at UNI. The point is that Iowa needs to make improvements. You just point to a Lee legacy as the solution. The upper weights NEED coaching.

Your right they do. However we took 5th at 74,5th at 97 and 4th at heavy. Swing away bud

You wearing yellow?

Are you happy with those results? PSU - 174 finals, 184 finals, 197 7th, Hwt. finals
Nope, considering they were by guys who were in our room for 5-6 years. Those are the results you want by redshirt freshman or sophomores on a championship team or a one year fill in as a senior while the blue chipper redshirts. Didn’t want to engage in all the discussion but unfortunately staying silent does nothing too. Fact is, we are another full recruiting/graduation cycle with not enough to show for it. What I mean by that is how excited were we all 5-6 years ago with these stud recruits coming in thinking the tide was turning back to Iowa? How we changed to getting blue chippers and our saviors were here. Unfortunately not enough improvements or change happened in that time and we are now calling this year and next year rebuilding years. Our best recruit in the last three years didn’t place this year (not discounting the deepest weight class) after three years in the room. Something has to change and it seems obvious that a couple assistants should be replaced with younger recent studs and one should be a non Hawk.

Well, maybe things aren’t so black and white, eh? A lot of solutions are only discussed or considered after some poor a$$hole stands up and states unpopular observations.
Yes, changes seem due, but Jay's tweet is not the way to do things. "Enlightenment" by social media is poor form that makes Jay look worse than he should.
Let's face it, having Hawk wrestling in 2nd place this year probably isn't the biggest problem that the athletic department is facing.

Jay’s tweet looks like a frustrated attempt to spark dialogue about something there’s really no good time to discuss.

Nothing Jay posted is out of line and he's mostly right if you believe, like he does, that the standard at Iowa is consistent titles - team and individual.

He is 100% right that Iowa has a brand problem. Their brand, fair or not, is that they are beat down by March and underperform at NCAA's. This is a major problem because the only way to catch PSU is to match their firepower. And how are you going to do that when Cael can point any recruit he wants to their results at NCAA's? They aren't even in the same stratosphere as the field when it comes to producing at NCAA's and every big recruit wants to be a champion.

How do you solve it? I'm not sure you can. Cael may just be unbeatable for most of the rest of his career. But you have to try something. New upperweight coaches, high level HWC athletes, and a different recruiting/talent evaluation methodology would be a nice start.

We should be grateful to have a consistent top 4 team, but that's not the standard Tom set.

Maybe so, but you can bet it was disingenuous. He’s a lot like you, can’t wait for any opportunity to try to run down the program and Tom.

Maybe you are too close. The program needs improvement. If second place is the goal the strategy is good.

I don't try to run down the program. I want them to catch PSU and call it like I see it. Does Jay have a history of this? Never seen anything before.

And answer this, what does it say that so many former hawks love to "run down the program?" Seems like the guys who wrestled 5 years under Tom might have some good perspective on the short comings. Is there another team with so much animus from its former athletes? Doesn't exactly help recruiting.

i've actually done that. And had he listened to me then, we wouldn't be in this situation. He didn't believe me. Everything that was in Larry Lee's notebook - had already been said to him.

So try again.

And dude. This is a sports message board. It's entire function is to "come here behind an anonymous name and start a thread." So when you say things like, this has no context and i have no ideas, well. I do. And i've posted them on numerous occasions. And all the name calling in the world won't change the facts. With Tom Brands at the helm, we will always be second fiddle to Carl. Something that's been said MANY times on this board from MANY Hawk fans. I'm just not coward enough to sit down, say nothing, and act like we can't do anything about that.
Gotta agree...have read Gobblin for years, but you are off the mark on this one. This is in fact an Iowa wrestling board for Iowa fans to talk the program, both good and bad.

Everyone who gets a little red ass when someone is critical about any of the coaches or wrestlers needs to remember that. If you still can't handle it, then you might want to evaluate participating on the boards at all.
