Fran hates Toussaint! Told you

You're missing the point. Why did Ulis come in before Toussaint in the first half? Why did our first string PG fall to third string? He is better than Ulis in most stats. I feel bad for the guy, hopefully he gets the minutes he deserves against Maryland. Last year he had six steals in a game against Maryland, I doubt we'll ever see Ulis get six steals. We need Toussaint on defense, I'd take him out of bohannan 8 days a week.
I think I can answer this. Joe is a pure point guard. Perkins is a natural 2 and Ulis at 6'3", while also a point guard is more natural at the 2 than Joe is at 6' even. Fran had been playing Jbo 30+ over the last 6 games so the decision to move Jbo to point guard pretty much ensured that Joe would be playing less than 10 minutes or as was the case in the last game only 6. If Fran sticks with this then that's probably pretty close to what Joe can expect going forward.

Well, I did say "maybe". I don't have any idea who deserves what.

When JBo isn't on the floor, the Iowa guards hardly even get defended. When JBo is on the floor, at the very least the other guys get to play 4 on 4 instead of 4 on 5.

Spreading the floor is important when you want KM to get his.

Glad you had a good laugh.
Don't bother trying to explain how the game works - it just doesn't matter to a certain group. There isn't one coach in the country who would be worried more about giving JT rather than JBo an open three. Funny how that opens things up.

Iowa has 4 guards that don't shoot well - I'm pretty sure that's a problem.

I don't think Fran hates Joe T, but maybe -

- Joe doesn't follow instructions well.
- JBo is still being guarded by opponents, the others are not. Frees up the middle.
- Ulis is a good shooter in practice, waiting for it to show up in the games

The real star of this team is KM. Perhaps the lineup provided him with more opportunities. Interesting that PMac had one of his best games.

We'll see what happens in the next game I guess.

You make it sound like the real experts are our coaches and not the posters on here.

How is that possible?

;)

According to ESPN, Joe is making a slightly higher percentage of three point shots than Jordan on the season (35.0% to 34.6%). Joe has only attempted 20 three point shots this year while Jordan has attempted 136. Other teams are not going to respect your three point shot when you have only taken 20 shots all season.

This is not to say Jordan deserves 30 plus minutes a game. It is just to point out that your statement is misleading. Joe needs to play more, but he also needs to shoot more and maintain a similar shooting percentage when he is on the court for other teams to see him as a three point threat.

That's the thing. None of us have any idea who deserves what; some just think they do.

thanks to you both for bringing some common sense to a "Fran hates anyone" thread.

This

I think a lot of fans are missing that important point. The guards are ok, but each of them have deficiencies. We don’t have 1 guard who is proficient on both ends of the floor. Ulis’ shot looks good but he’s super hesitant to shoot. Hopefully that 3 he hit instills much needed confidence.

And the biased posters (we all know who they are) refuse to be objective and only point out the deficiencies of one of our guards.

Hell I like our players. They seem to genuinely like each other as well. Joe T was cheering wildly on the bench during that entire run. But Fran hates him? Joe T and Pat are tight. It’s highly unlikely that Fran has nothing but the utmost respect for a kid who came to Iowa from the East coast to play for him.

I don’t know the question to the when and whys of playing time. I get confused sometimes as well. But as far as the Minnesota game….it seemed really clear cut to me. And, really, that’s the only game I’m commenting on specifically

Be careful discussing the possibility that Joe might be happy. One of our resident experts, @jonesy , will call you batshit crazy for talk like this!

We don't know exactly what Joe thinks; no one does. We can only observe him smiling and appearing happy.

But here was one of our resident experts earlier in this thread, who thinks he has it all figured out!

if you're suggesting that Joe's smile is an indication that he must be happy with what's going on with him and his role on the team I think you're batshit crazy.

Good take. Hopefully he transfers somewhere he's appreciated.

I think something to think about, and probably where most of the angst is coming from, is this….our last 3 losses, RU, PU and PSU this is jbos line from those games…
RU-28min 6pts 1 reb 0assists
PU-30min 6pts 2reb 1assist
PSU-35min 2pts 0reb 5assist

now in my mind (and probably quite a few other posters on here), when a guy has #’s like that and is a pretty big liability on defense, his minutes should probably decrease. Now where the frustration comes in, instead of that happening, a more productive player on both ends of the floor, Joe, is moved to the bench and the far less productive player, jbo, takes his role and has an increase in minutes.
I think obviously the idea is to get jbo out of the funk he’s in, but in some of our eyes, Jbo isn’t taking us where we want to go regardless of how he’s shooting the ball.
This is where my frustration comes from, maybe im alone in that but I don’t think so.
You can even include games where we won where he was awful like IU game when he played 29 min and 2-11 & 1-7 for 3 or 1st game vs MD when he played 27 min 1-5 & 1-4 for 3 or at MN when he played 30 min and was 3-11 and 2-8 for 3. I can't wait for the next game where he finally shoots well when he goes 4-6 or something like that, which as a Hawk fan I'm hoping for, but then we will have all his defenders on here say I told you so trying to justify his minutes after one good game finally.

Also with the whole narrative JBo takes a defender away open up spacing. Ok then how do people justify Connor playing where defenders sag off so bad daring him to shoot every time he touches and unlike the other guards he can't drive past any defender to create shots or play defense any where close to them.

Yeah he’s been pretty bad all yr outside of like 2-3 games. But i think the losses really get people upset and looking at the numbers and something to blame for the loss. But apparently after a win, even against a bad MN team, we can’t talk about how crappy jbo has been and why we think other players might be a better option. Take the win and shut up i guess.
Tonight will be interesting. Joe played very well against MD last time, they have Fatts Russel who’s probably the fastest player in the league. We’ll see how Fran decides to plays it.

🤣 touché! A coach *outside of ia city. Better?
Honestly, everyone thinks Joe should be playing more. I'm not sure there is a fan on here that doesn't think that. I'm the kind of person though, that if we win, I don't really care how we got there. If we lose because of it, then that's something to talk about.

With that being said, I'm really starting to wonder if Joe is either hurt/told coaches of other plans after this season, or, as others have pointed out, does he not run the offense as expected by Fran too much. I'm no expert, clearly, but there has to be something, we as the casual fans, aren't seeing. On top of that, I do believe that Jabo was out the door until the CJF thing happened. Could it be that Fran talked him into using the extra year because he needed somebody when CJF pulled the rug out, and now Fran has PT guilt? Could be that Fran promised him PT, but now Jabo isn't playing as well as he once was, and Fran is stuck and feels bad to bench a kid that came back for him, and has given everything to Iowa bball for 6 years? This seems stupid, but it just might be the case.

I think that is definitely the case to some extent. Frans comfort level with jbo is obviously very high. As far as winning and losing, yeah it’s great when we win, as wins are pretty tough to come by in the BIG. My problem is, we’ve already seen how this story plays out. We’ll have no postseason success with jbo playing as much as he has been, especially at pg. And the flip side to that is, we weren’t expected to have much of a postseason with this team anyway. Like ive stated b4, we don’t really know what this team is capable of without jbo on the floor bc he’s been playing all but 5minutes. Maybe we would look much worse, but I kinda doubt it.

Based on the numbers, Bohannon shouldn't be playing. Either should Connor. Perkins is shooting horribly but at least he gives you some defense. I would have Perkins and Sandfort as my two guards. Also, I would be way upping Kris's minutes. He is the second best player on the team and only plays 19 minutes a game.

To show how bad Connor and Bohannon have been in conference this is their PER (the average player is considered 15):
Connor: 8.4
Bohannon: 6.9
Perkins at 10.5 isn't much better.

Here is the rest of the team
Keegan Murray: 30.5
Kris Murray: 25.9
Patrick McCaffery: 18.2
Filip Rebraca: 16.3
Joe Toussaint: 15.7
Payton Sandfort: 13.6
Ahron Ullis 13.2

The Murrays should both be playing 30+ minutes a game.
Bohannon plays 28 minutes a game... that is just bad coaching.

At least JBo forces you to guard him. Ulis, Perk, Connor and Joe T sent even guarded unless they go to the rim.

He doesn't really force anyone to guard him though. He isn't the threat he once was. He shoots 26% from 3 in conference play. Only Perkins is worse.
Honestly, teams are still guarding him though. It's kind of odd and it would seem at some point, that they figure out he isn't that shooter he once was. Maybe not though, maybe they keep facing someone on him outside the 3 point line, and if they do, I don't see Fran switching.

I agree, we will be one and done, which coming into this year, is kind of what I expected. I'd take Sandfort over both Cmac and Jabo in a heartbeat.

And for those of you glowing in the light of our big win over Minny they were the 1st victim of Nebraska. They are terrible. David’s PER numbers show you everything you need to know. This is kind of a little like the Petras situation. In the case of FB it can be argued that Padilla isn’t better so we don’t have another option. The numbers after a very wide body of work this year show Bohannon should only be playing spot minutes. Fran has not handed the keys over to Joe like JBO said was going to happen. Let Touissant play 30 minutes a game at the point and Ulis 10. If he wants to trot out a guy who’ had hip replacement surgery and give him 36 minutes with the numbers he’s putting up I don’t know what to tell you. He is not helping us win games.

I hate to sound like the self-important experts on this board but it appears obvious to anyone with any basketball sense that JBo is playing because he is a three-point threat. The opponent has to pressure him 100 percent of the time. Joe T. is not a threat, and the opponent can back off him and clog up Keegan opportunities.
Anyone that fails to see this..... well I'm sorry i can't help you're mentally challenged at the concepts of a team sport.

Jbo doesn't open up the floor like so many on here want to believe. He's just a guard being guarded by one guy. It's true that opponents play up super close to him, but it's as much about his inability to drive by them as it is about his 3 point prowess. I hear people on here telling us how he somehow strikes fear into the opponents and they all have to gameplan for him. This is complete and utter nonsense. He's averaging 7.5 points per game in conference play while playing 31mpg. At 25%, he's missing contested and open shots. The gameplan is take one guard and stay up in his grill because he's absolutely no threat to score going around you. He does nothing to open up the middle. It's pretty much the opposite of Joe who they don't play as tight because he's more likely to drive around you and break down the interior defense by going to the rim or dishing an assist.

If Fran was really concerned about opening up the middle on offense he'd swap Kris for Rebraca. I like Rebraca. He's a solid rebounder and he plays as hard as anyone out there, but his game is within 10 feet. There is nothing he's going to do to draw his man outside of the key. Guards don't slow down Keegan's game. It's mostly the presence of interior defenders that are able to easily slide off of Rebraca that allows easy doubles to occur every time he goes to work down low. Well... that and Fran's stupid 2 foul rule.

Except Connor doesn't ever go to the rim. He has one 2pt basket on the ENTIRE season. He can't shoot 3s minus PSU game where he almost made as many 3s in that game as he had all season. Yet he plays as many minutes as Perkins and Ulis.

If you support the coach and players you are called a sunshine pumper. What is the appropriate name for those on here hoping players like Perkins and Kris transfer to other schools? Certainly "Hawkeye fans" is out of the question.

Some of you guys might want to bite down hard on a bullet because, whether you like it or not, no one that could make a change cares one iota for your opinion, and McCaffery is here, better or worse, for at least another five years.

Out of the question? I would probably just call them Hawkeye fans who are extremely frustrated because they believe that the coach of their team (and it is Iowa's team, not Fran's) is mismanaging the roster to the detriment of certain players and the team overall. That's what I would call them anyway. If they weren't fans do you think they would care if they thought Fran was mucking it up?

With respect to everything else you are correct. Neither Fran nor his boss gives a shit what anyone thinks and he isn't going anywhere for at least another 5 years and probably longer.

In the first half, Joe came in for JBo and Ahron for Tony. Based on minutes played, JBo and Joe must have been in together briefly. In the second half, JBo spent a lot of time at point, even with Ahron in the game. I noticed Ahron on top with the ball some as well, so presumably they switched up a bit. Ahron was a combo guard when recruited and played mostly on the wing last year (2 and 3), so he's the most versatile guard (along with CMac).
Ulis was running the pg when he was in.

There isn't a huge difference between what the two when there running the motion weave stuff.

This is interesting. Their last coach had the opposite happen. School didn’t renew his contract and the players/parents raised hell and got him another contract. Fun fact, Randy Larson was also a former Highland coach

That list supports what my eyes have been seeing. Patrick stock is rising. Rebraca is getting used to the physical Big Ten and giving solid minutes.

This highland is in idaho. I posted it to point out that patrick is criticizing these high school kids. Yet criticism pointed at a millionaire coach and highly compensated athletes is frowned upon by some real fans on this board.

Hardly an apples to apples scenario. But sure, I guess you could compare it to those who are really nothing more than an arm chair coach thinking they know more than they really do about the game, thinking that they know what is going on with a player on a given night and matchup, thinking they know more than coaches who have devoted their lives and livelihoods to the game, etc. to a college kid who may not know anything behind the scenes why the kids are threatening to stop playing. I guess you actually were on to something!
