Hawkeye Women's BBall Season 2022-2023

Kyle, are you staying with this site or moving with Tom? Is this change happening on Jan. 1st? If you can’t say anything right now I understand. I really appreciated your coverage of the teams/sports you do. Thank you!

There definitely is a disconnect between her and the caches right now., It seems like they are not on the same page.
I have a feeling she really wants to play the 4. The coaches don’t need her there, but see what she can do at the 5. I think we all hoped / expected her to be as exciting as Stuelke has been but at the 5. Just doesnt seem like her game. Might not be dissimilar from Angel Reese…

Just a quick WBB update: as many of you know now, Kyle and the Hawkeye Report team have moved to a different site. The GoIowaAwesome team has move over and will now be running the Iowa Rivals page.

For those who don't know, I've been covering Iowa WBB for GoIowaAwesome since the 2017-2018 season. Back when I started, the team didn't receive a ton of coverage. Jeff Linder covered them for The Gazette, and that was basically it for full time coverage. Then the 2018-2019 team made an Elite 8 run with Megan Gustafson and the team's popularity grew. Caitlin Clark and the past few seasons have taken that to another level entirely.

I don't know if Kyle still intends to post in these forums, but I do want to say that he does great work covering the team. His work providing recruiting coverage and analysis is something that hasn't really been done for Iowa WBB previously.

In terms of coverage, I won't try to replicate Kyle. He's good at what he does for a reason, and my day job is a as a small town lawyer. But I do plan to expand the coverage from what it's been previously. For 5 and a half seasons, my coverage of Iowa WBB has been a labor of love. With the move to Rivals, I will now be a paid contributor.

I'm still contemplating what that expanded coverage will look like, but I'm excited for this opportunity.

Anyone see Illinois play this year? Statistically they look like an athletic team that could give Iowa trouble today.

They almost beat Indiana. This will be a tough one. If they don’t beat us, they will certainly beat one of the other B1G contenders.

Are you going to do most of your posting on the premium board, here on the free board or both? God Bless. Go Hawks.

We still need to have those discussions internally. I've only known about this move for a few days, so it's all pretty new yet.

That said, my preference is to post as much as possible on the free board. WBB is still growing and the best way to grow the game is to reach as many people as possible.

O'Grady must really be in the dog house. I know there are differing opinions here about who should see minutes at the back-up 5, but I felt like we could have used some of her rim protection today.
Coming into the season, I thought this would be the deepest the bench has been in years. Instead, Coach Bluder seems to have less faith in the bench this year compared to the last couple years.

That starts at the 5 like you said. O'Grady, Ediger, and now Stuelke have each been the primary backup 5 in one of our last 3 games. They don't appear to be any closer to picking a winner from that group, and matchups don't appear to have dictated who played.

Here are the minutes Affolter has played in our losses plus the ISU and Drake games: 9, 7, 3, 3, 2, and 0. She basically gives Martin one short rest a game and that's it.

And at the 1, Clark came out of the game 3 or 4 times today (including fouling out) but played nearly 37 minutes. Does she really gain anything from resting for 1 game minute at a time?

My thought after watching & listening to Lisa over the years is that she is like Kirk Ferentz in that how much playing time one gets is based on how they practice leading up to the game. As far as Goodman & Wetering go, I don't expect either of them to play much until next year and they get another year out from their knee surgery. I also expect that with Fereubach next year as well unless she is forced too by some unforeseen circumstance.
I would still give some of Gabbies minutes to Affolter at the 2 guard.

You mean some of her 2021-2022 rim protection.

To her credit, O'Grady hasn't played long enough stretches in any game that counts to get into any sort of rhythm. Personally, I believe a big part of why she has regressed is the short leash she's been given. I also believe this is why none of the backups have really shined to date. And Monica has had good games and bad games.

The post issues are more Bluder's failures to adjust to the way defenses are clogging the paint and are also in part due to poor post feeds. Several of the passes have not been catchable or are thrown WAY too low. When you have a 6'4 post you need to feed her high and not throws lasers at her knees.

When our posts do get passes, there are defenders under the basket and they're forced to arc their shots over the top. Those shots fell last year at a high rate but this year they've mostly rimmed out.

There is also fewer opportunities for shot blocks because opposing teams are driving more which creates a mismatch. When our bigs do attempt shot blocks, they're getting called for fouls even though the offensive player is initiating the contact. Our defenders need to be trying to draw charges instead of backpedaling and allowing easy drives and layups.

I don’t disagree with this, but I think Lisa sees them in practice and has stated wants someone to step up there. To Lisa’s view no one has. In close games you have to maximize your chance to win that game. Develop in practice and games with breathing room to allow floor time.

Brandon I must say, your game reports are excellent,thought-full and and well written. Look forward forward to more
Thanks! Quick question for everyone. When I do recaps, would you prefer that I post a link to them in this thread, in the game thread, or in a completely different thread?

In the game thread would be my choice.

I’d prefer a new thread personally……I rarely go into a game thread cause I’m watching the game not reading posts….. I’d never see your recap in the game thread

With Stremlow committing, is there a Hawk or former Hawk that anyone can compare her to?
Not an expert by any means but her recruiting rating as a top 40 or 50ish player usually a very good but not elite player. Her ranking out of high school is higher than any guard or wing on the team not named Clark. Of bigs only Stuelke I think was ranked higher. Past players in that range Tia Davis, Doyle, and Megan G. So a very good player. Doyle as a comparison was my first thought, highly regarded pg but not a great shooter at this point

Stremlow has crazy stats this year per Madison.com:

“She’s one of four Wildcats averaging in double figures with 15.1 points per game, including scoring 20 or more points three times. Stremlow also has a team-high 8.9 assists, 8.8 steals and 8.4 rebounds with a pair of quadruple-doubles and three triple-doubles.”

I‘m looking forward to seeing her in an Iowa uniform!

I have been really critical of Gabbie Marshall & her shooting this year. So I want to say COGRADULATIONS on that BIG TIME CLUTCH THREE POINT SHOT late in the fourth quarter. She had alot of arc on that shot and hope she keeps it up. When she is hitting those shots this team is so much better & dangerous. Shout out to Gabbie Marshall.

Her shot earlier in the game was also just as big, if not as emotional. Overall, 50% (2/4) for the night. Not shabby at all.

Just watching Jada in warmups. She has good shooting form, looks very fluid and smooth. I think she has the tools to be very good.
As a 26-point favorite tonight, Iowa should be able to play the bench a lot including Jada. Since they burned her redshirt for 2+ minutes and looked good against Dartmouth three games ago, she has not played again. I sure wish she could get a few more opportunities and not waste an entire year of eligibility. This reminds me of how Hannah Stewart and Tagyn Larson wasted their freshman years for a few minutes each.

So I mention this a bit in my preview (link below) but Northwestern is the team Iowa struggles with the most relative to a team's actual talent. Iowa might well win and even win comfortably, but I wouldn't count on the deep bench seeing a ton of time tonight.

I thought freshman could play in a couple games and not burn the red shirt. Are you sure that burns it? I haven't looked at the actual rules.
