I'm glad to see he's going to be back on the mat in competition.
86 kg makes sense, because the cut to 74 kg would be too much with same day weigh in.
And in all honesty, does it really matter 74 or 86 when it comes to the Olympic trials?

Nelson took 5th last year and beat AA's Ethan Smith,Peyton Mocco, Edmond Ruth, and National Finalist at 184 this year Dustin Plott along the way. His only two losses in that tournament- National Champ Mekhi Lewis and Chris Foca who took 3rd in that bracket. Your boy Starocci only beat him 2-1 that season.

What did Mekhi and Foca take this year? Nelson does not have the offensive variety to pencil him in as an automatic. Many people made runs one year to fall back the next. He is a good fundamental wrestler. But not athletic nor offensive minded enough to guarantee a high placing at nationals. If he faces a couple long athletic guys it could be a quick exit. You have plenty of examples in your recent history to remind you of what can happen to a plodder at NCAAs.
While I get your point, I do think GB will AA next year. he has already shown that he is an AA.
it’s about fit and need. the only spot that’s really a need is 125/133 opposite drake but it’s also slim pickings in the portal currently. unless a big fish enters the portal my money is on them rolling with drake at 125 and schreiver at 133
I think that some would argue 125 or 133, 141, 157, 184 if Brands doesn’t get a Medical. The portal could have no hot prospects to snag up either.
block was a pretty highly ranked recruit at 141. someone is cutting to 157 from 165. 184 will have to be a last second thing based on brands
A lotta hoping. It’d be great if all those things happened. Hopefully Block isn’t sucking a ton of weight after a big injury. Hopefully our 157 isn’t a shell of their former self. Hopefully the same NCAA officials that determine gambling suspensions don’t determine Medical hardships after seeing NBs inability to keep his mouth shut on social media.

It’s only April 1. Long, long way to go for the portal. Check back to when we got our new guys the last few seasons.
they were able to enter the portal after their coach left. still a month left before the portal closes but there aren’t any significant upgrades in my opinion.
it’s just a prediction but i stand by my statement that i will be surprised if there are any real additions
125/133, 141,149, 184,197 all need transfers. I am not 100% convinced BK is going to AA at Heavy. Only being a part time wrestler is going to prevent him from ever being at the top.
Agree with all of those. Zach showed us what a long time room guy grinder is probably going to get you when it counts, and it may have been a lucky year, he could regress to the guy losing to Colby Franklin the year before. I just don’t think there is going to be a big upgrade available unless Elam leaves mizzu, or Buchanan transfers a third time. Maybe Little, he looks 30, but is listed to have 3 years left.
OK, let's be honest. Brands is asking for a medical red shirt from free 2021 season. This is the same red shirt that the NCAA has denied for all other wrestlers who claimed the same shirt. Remember Humphey from Lehigh, who also claimed injury year of 2021 only to be denied for the reason that it was a free year and didn't count.
Best way for him to return is to win case that gambling sanction was unfair and NCAA should return eligibility back to affected athletes. In which case Assad, Cass, and Brands are back.

Brands wrestled in 2021, he's requesting a medical for the 2022 season which he lost to injury. Assad was the one who was injured in 2021 and Brands wrestled 184 in his place that year

The portal season has just begun, my friend. Too early to make such proclamations. Not everyone has decided, coaching changes will happen, the portal is always open for graduates, etc.
This is false. He's asking for the 2022 season where he only wrestled a few matches in December 2021. The prior year was the free year.
Problem with the portal is you don’t know who will enter quality wise, if there will be anyone at the weight you need, and hope your not competing with deep pocket NiL schools like PSU, Michigan, tOSU etc…
I truly can't recall but has the portal ever put a school over the top for a national title? I'm old school and personally against the portal "gun for hire" stench. Anyone actually in collegiate wrestling who proclaims to be all-in to save wrestling should refrain from the portal. It will create a minor league among the remaining lesser schools and be the death of half the schools currently with a program. On the PSU board some are wishing Noto from LHU transfers to PSU at 125 but to me that program needs Noto to help them keep wrestling alive at that small program a lot more than PSU needs him to break the scoring record. I just don't like where the sport is headed. Once gone, those programs won't come back.
Well yeah...but what else are you going to do at this point? There aren't stud HS or JC guys unsigned for next year at this point.
Also...and it's amazing how often we have to say this...IOWA is one of the deep pocket schools. There's only one pocket deeper. (Not saying you don't understand that.)
I understood that last year when our guys we wanted at 184 and 133 signed with PSU. Also Griffith gave us a look , signed with Michigan. We have deep pockets, but not deep enough to get whoever we want, like PSU, and lately Michigan. Michigan’s overall wrestling budget is #11 in the country, but that doesn’t include NIL, which they must be up there with the deepest pockets. 133 was kind of a bust for PSU , but 184 helped them, and was way better than what we ended up with. Can’t believe PSU talking about bringing in Noto with all the young lightweight talent they have and have coming it, like the number one pfp guy who will be freshman 125 for them next year. I actually thought us getting Noto for one year, allowing Drake to bump up next year would be perfect. The next year Deluca is freshman.
That's fans wishful thinking about Noto but one never knows. I agree with you. I'm happy with the recruits coming in. No need for portal.

I wonder what the percent of AA transfers with two or less years of eligibility improve their position at nationals the year after transfer? Without checking, it has to be less than 50%. Maybe 1 in 3. Maybe less.
I say two or less years because it is my belief that 2+ years in another room hinders the development of a wrestler in a new room even if the new coaches are superior.

Except your pockets are plenty deep enough and transfers picked other schools over Iowa for less money.
For Penn State, Max Dean came and won a national championship. Other than than, every Penn State short term portal (so excluding Kerk and Mesenbrink who technically portaled but before using any eligibility) regressed. That includes Kuhn, Conel, Hildebrandt, Berge (not sure if he counts or not), Nagao, and Truax.
Right. Max is the only portal transfer I know that improved after transfer his first year with 2 years or less of eligibility, but I'm sure their are more. I don't have the capability but would love someone to dig into that. The transfer portal may be fools gold. Not many come to mind that live up to expectations.
Edit to add that Max came to PSU for a unique reason. He was pissed about Cornell's covid policy. So no axe to grind with coaches or NIL dollars spinning in his head.
