and then Dean actually Lost his senior year so he also regressed. For Penn State, Max Dean came and won a national championship. Other than than, every Penn State short term portal (so excluding Kerk and Mesenbrink who technically portaled but before using any eligibility) regressed. That includes Kuhn, Conel, Hildebrandt, Berge (not sure if he counts or not), Nagao, and Truax.
"Regressed" after he came and won a national championship is probably something both he and PSU will gladly live with.and then Dean actually Lost his senior year so he also regressed.
I can point out many national champs who then lost. Martinez was beat twice by Cenzo. Then he lost the next year. It happens. Martin beat Nickal , Nickal wins the next two years once by beating Martin. Did Martin regress or did the others get better?"Regressed" after he came and won a national championship is probably something both he and PSU will gladly live with.
The data is pretty clear that it is incredibly hard to maintain the intensity needed to perform at the same elite level in the final year of competition.I can point out many national champs who then lost. I would say it depends of course, Nickal, Zain, Nolf, Brooks, Starocci etc did. I'm guessing that sometimes the other person is just better. The data is pretty clear that it is incredibly hard to maintain the intensity needed to perform at the same elite level in the final year of competition.
thanks for the correction, my bad.The portal season has just begun, my friend. Too early to make such proclamations. Not everyone has decided, coaching changes will happen, the portal is always open for graduates, etc.
This is false. He's asking for the 2022 season where he only wrestled a few matches in December 2021. The prior year was the free year.
Not a huge deal but was nice depth to have. Guessing he will look lower level to a place where he will get a chance to wrestle, which I can't blame guys for doing.
If we're simply talking transfers, then Jayden Eierman would meet that criteriaI truly can't recall but has the portal ever put a school over the top for a national title? I'm old school and personally against the portal "gun for hire" stench. Anyone actually in collegiate wrestling who proclaims to be all-in to save wrestling should refrain from the portal. It will create a minor league among the remaining lesser schools and be the death of half the schools currently with a program. On the PSU board some are wishing Noto from LHU transfers to PSU at 125 but to me that program needs Noto to help them keep wrestling alive at that small program a lot more than PSU needs him to break the scoring record. I just don't like where the sport is headed. Once gone, those programs won't come back.
I don't disagree, and for the most part like 'organically' grown wrestlers.Other than than, every Penn State short term portal (...) regressed. That includes Kuhn, Conel, Hildebrandt, Berge (not sure if he counts or not), Nagao, and Truax.
The Martinson twins are in the portal also. Not a huge deal but was nice depth to have. Guessing he will look lower level to a place where he will get a chance to wrestle, which I can't blame guys for doing.
Think there are a couple more guys, similar to Jesuroga in skill level, that will do the same this offseason.
I would just roll with Cochran and let Mirasola redshirt and not worry about Cardenas unless he comes to Cael and asks to come in no strings attached like Dean did. Is the difference between Cochran and either one of the other two going to be the difference next year for Penn State after just lapping the field this year? The only place PSU should even pursue a portal transfer at all is HWT if Kerkvliet doesn't come back.I don't disagree, and for the most part like 'organically' grown wrestlers.
I think there is likely an explanation for what might appear to be a, too early to tell but seemingly developing, pattern for "veteran" transfer wrestlers regressing slightly in our room.
Think about anyone with a couple of years of D1 competition under their belt coming from another room where the methods and mindset are different. Take a guy like Bernie Truax perfectly sandwiched between two hungry, soon to be 4xers.
So as a veteran you go from being a top dog elsewhere, back to that incoming freshman feel of inferiority your first few weeks in or room. What are the odds, with Bernie possessing one of the best sweep singles in the country, suddenly not being able to score a single takedown in practice, for weeks on end. That's not so outrageous a thought, especial considering Aaron and Carter's otherworldly defense.
In short you take a high flying transfer who might have thought by just putting on the blue and white singlet equates to a national finalist, only to be so humbled in the transition that his confidence gets broken. Defensiveness and lack of aggression creep in, and then suddenly you are a different wrestler on an altered trajectory.
Wrestling is 60-80% mental, and there could be a real negative effect on coming into the PSU room as a short term rental. A year or more later this effect likely fades, but that first year could prove quite difficult.
The same probably doesn't hold true for the freshman transfers, or kids with very aggressive, whatever it takes, it's ok to fail, mentality like Mesenbrink. Likewise the lack of a D1 resume means expectations and mindset are different
In short I would rather not see late career short term gap fillers coming in for just a year. I will believe it when I see it more (Max) but for the most part I don't think we can automatically assume Cael will transform AAs into national champs automatically.
Would I like Marisola to shirt next year? Sure, you bet. Given the choice of say Cardenas or a true freshman Marisola starting next year at 197? Let's go with the home grown product.
Most, if not all of that class should be if they want to start. Riggins and Kolby were the stars of that class. I guess all the other guys didn’t think they were going to be room guys. Don’t want to loose all of them. The Martinson twins are in the portal also.

The fact that Colby announced he’s coming back next year tells me he knows we are going to have a hole at 57 or 49. Not good news. Like someone said before, do you think Colby would ever sniff PSU’s line up??Yeah a few guys who never won state showed up at Iowa and were surprised to find they ended up as backups.
Lol
You might be right, but don't think you should assume that's the only reason he's coming back. Might just love to compete, want to be a part of the team, and so on. But no, I don't think he or most non-PSU guys would ever "sniff PSUs line-up". We need better at 49 and maybe 57 (depending on MC dropping) than what we have if we want to make a jump. But we still need 'room guys', and I think with his funk he's a good one to have around. At least he produces some exciting matches. The fact that Colby announced he’s coming back next year tells me he knows we are going to have a hole at 57 or 49. Not good news. Block should be plan 1A at 149. He’s had some good results. Even if he isn’t a high AA contender this year, I think he is the future for Iowa at the weight and should get a chance to experience it all this year. You might be right, but don't think you should assume that's the only reason he's coming back. That’s why I said I hope we don’t lose all our good room guys to the portal. With Colby being a starter for a year, I just doubt he wants a 6 th year in college to help the starter get better. Anthony Ferrari is posting more stuff of him in the Iowa room, and posting other Hawkeye wrestling related stuff, so I don’t think he has been kicked to the curb yet. If he can meet academics, he would be in the mix at 157/149, but the 149 cut for him seems extreme. Obviously, if caliendo cuts to 157, his only possible spot is 149.You might be right, but don't think you should assume that's the only reason he's coming back. Will have to see how he recovers from ACL surgery.Block should be plan 1A at 149. He’s had some good results. Even if he isn’t a high AA contender this year, I think he is the future for Iowa at the weight and should get a chance to experience it all this year.
Cobe was "sniffing" it pretty hard last time he wrestled Haines. The fact that Colby announced he’s coming back next year tells me he knows we are going to have a hole at 57 or 49. Not good news. Like someone said before, do you think Colby would ever sniff PSU’s line up??
Plan A should be finding the best wrestler at that weight whether it’s a transfer or a guy currently there. If it’s Block great but nobody gets a spot just cuz he’s the “future.” Expectations should be high AA at every weight every year.Block should be plan 1A at 149. He’s had some good results. He definitely doesn't let it fly on his feet. He let's it fly when someone is in on his legs attempting to take him down or tries to go upper body. Iowa needs guys who create and finish leg attacks (Caliendo). It would be such a Brands thing to do to have him in the lineup since they are stuck in the 80's mindset and also the last time Lisbon was producing college All Americans outside of everyone's favorite assistant coach and the recruiting guru Coach Morningstall.I may be in the minority here but I think Cobe can do some damage next year. He just seems like a guy who keeps getting better each and every year. Plus he lets it fly, wrestles with no fear. Those type of guys are dangerous. I think Cobe finds the line up at either 157 or 149 and reaches the podium if healthy.
I was fooled into thinking Zach would reach the podium this year, much like many thought Colby might 2 years ago. Eventually, in a long grinding tournament with good competition, these guys revert to what you thought they were before their miracle run.I may be in the minority here but I think Cobe can do some damage next year. You must have missed the giant brace he was wrestling with the 2nd half of the season.I was fooled into thinking Zach would reach the podium this year, much like many thought Colby might 2 years ago. Cobe or Zach? You must have missed the giant brace he was wrestling with the 2nd half of the season.
Like a cheesier version of cobe!Who the f is Colby?
You must be from Lisbon? He was a walk on for crissakes. The more Cobe's we have in the line up the further Iowa falls behind Penn State. There in lies the issue. Brands and company are getting their clocks cleaned in recruiting. This isn't the 80's and 90's anymore. You can't pull under achieving HS guys from Iowa and turn them into All Americans anymore . I'll take Haines by a tech, his back up by a major, and the third string guy by a decision over the great Lisbon hope all day long. You score points from wherever you score points the best from.
Cobe will score off of his own shots and counters well when a guy is on his legs. Often turning their shot into his points.
Where he is really dangerous is if someone wants to go upper body with him. Not many guys do because he will put them to their back.
Cobe was/is a good combination of "conventional" and "funk".
Nope not from Lisbon, not even from the eastern side of the state, lol.You must be from Lisbon? He was a walk on for crissakes. Was that their first meeting? Psu tends to widen the gap on hawks the more they wrestle. So I’d take Haines to widen the gap before Cobe notches a win.Nope not from Lisbon, not even from the eastern side of the state, lol.
That's an interesting take you have on how bad Cobe would get beat by Haines and his backups, with Haines beating Cobe by the huge margin of 3 - 2 the last time they wrestled.
