Illinois Dual Thread

Love him or hate him, Carl is the master of detail, game planning his wrestlers to the point of individual matches.
Look at RBY vs Desanto progression, Kem vs Carter, Kerk vs Cass.
Carl is on a different level.
Hate me for saying it.
It's true.
You’re exactly right. Everyone wants to win in march and he puts his guys in the best position to do so against the top guys. Sucks but true

I hate to pile on here, because you guys are doing just fine. But I will add my sense of frustration when, during Cass's match, the coaches are apparently telling Cass to keep riding him and get the stall-out, while Ironside is shouting, "Don't just ride him! Let him up! Go feet to back!" Two very different coaching philosophies, two very different style matches. Tonight was Fan Appreciation Night for chess lovers.

To be fair if we had a team full of Spencer Lees like Penn State recruits he wouldn’t have to say much, either.
The only problem is not beating/dominating guys that should be beaten/dominated. If it was just losing to the spencers of the world that’s one thing …. Not getting better and being just another top end~ish guy is another. That’s the problem.

Where are the scholarships going? Major holes on this team whether its Iowa's #1 at the weight or the backups. No depth. The recruiting strategy does not work. Also Iowa has been dealing with way too many injuries over the last few seasons. Something isn't right there and it could be in the s&c room.

As a guy that has watched Iowa Wrestling since I was a wee babe (35 + years) only the Zelesky years have been more frustrating then the last decade. Guys that can't take shots and can't score make up most of the Iowa roster.

I'm as disappointed in tonight's performance as anyone, but some of you guys are on suicide watch.

It's a down year and we're still ranked #2. Do we deserve it? Not currently, but we've got as good of a chance at 2nd as anyone else.

Do I think TNT are washed up as some think? Hell no.
Do I think they sound tired? Yes, but because their guys aren't performing to expectations.

There's only so much a coach can do to get their guys prepared. Everyone at this level is talented and everyone has tape. Everyone has tape on everyone else. Do our guys do any scouting in their spare time? At what point does this fall on the coach? At what point does it fall on the wrestler?

But I do think TNT have stepped up their recruiting game and have closed the gap on PSU better than anyone else in D1. it's not enough to consistently win, but I think it'll be enough to challenge once or twice a recruiting cycle.

Furthermore, this is also the tail-end of a previous cycle that includes holdovers from our former graduates: Lee, Murin, and Warner. We knew the cycle would eventually reset and I think we'll be an all-around better team in two years.

Unfortunately what seems to be hurting us is striking out on 133, 157 and 174. It's hard to replace DeSanto, Young and Kemerer. Who knows, maybe Teske can turn the corner and AA, but I think they're fully aware they failed with Cullan and Nelson and at this point there's nothing they can do expect hit the transfer portal and/ or ride it out and wait for the next batch to develop and pray they don't whiff again.

And the guy that compared TNT to Brian Ferentz can **** the **** off.

Epic loss by Warner but expected at this point. It's going to be a long long season with this team.
Warner needs to try to score before late in the third or OT. That match was sick to watch. He needs to pull it together and start wrestling 7 mins instead of handfighting for 6:30 and then trying to pull it out at the end, which lately hasn't been working too well. He's going to get a shitty seeding at B10s and NCAAs if he doesn't pull it together. He is so much more talented than this!

Oh yeah, 9.9 scholarships can really be spread around. FYI - they likely don't mean jackshit for a D1 wrestler.
And most of these guys that are now starting were backups to our former AA's.
Unless your PSU, no big recruit is going to come in and ride the pine for a couple years before they get a chance to crack the starting lineup.

Covid helped us to a title, but also set us back when everyone decided to return for an extra year, which was 5 starters, now we're seeing that end result.

You should give them another year or two before saying the recruiting strategy doesn't work considering the big names we have coming in.

And also don't discredit their ability in the transfer portal so far. It's been clutch and that changes everything.

Well stated...spot on! And yes, comparing TnT to Brian is way f'ing out there!! The wrestlers wrestle the matches...and they need to do a better fricking job at it at some weights. Kudos to Spencer, Murin, PK and Big Tony; complete domination. PK will be top 5. Assad needs to get on his offense; he's heading down the JWAR path to losing at the end because of his lack of attempts, especially against lesser opponents. His opponent was ranked 29th yet Abe acted like he was wrestling Parker or Trent. He and Warner need to get to their offense as does Brands. Cannot get where you want to go, especially in March, if you're not taking more than 2 shots a match. Cobe has super funk but he needs to avoid the TDs...Carr schooled him and hopefully he'll learn from it. Where was RW? Injured? Anything serious (do we know)? I sure hope we look better against Purdue cause there were a few ugly matches tonight.

Again, kudos to Lee, Murin, PK and Tony; that's how we need to attack on offense!!

Braunagel down. Kennedy with a tight waist. Riding still. Finally lets him go. 7-2. Braunagel with a shot and Kennedy feeds him hips. Back to their feet. Kennedy ankle pick but Braunagel goes over the top and ends up with the TD. 7-4. Escape Kennedy. 8-4. And Kennedy throws him to his back! 2 TD and 4 NF. Wins 14-4! 16-13 Hawks
PK is the real deal; this kid is going to make noise in March. At least a top 5.

Can't help but wonder if Tom and Terry are burned out

Consider tnt are 5 years older than Gable was when he retired
