Iowa recruiting thread.

I think Bob is a strategist. You build a business on goals and what the strategy is to meet and exceed those goals. The strategies have to have a process. Bob knows a thing or two about process.
TNT pick who should be recruited and what the needs of the program are. I can see a tremendous amount of value Bob will bring, in the area of refining certain processes of the program.
PSU has IRA. We have Bob. Beyond a doubt this helps Hawkeye Wrestling immensely and helps level the playing field.
Should I be incorrect in my statements Bob, my apologies in advance.
Pretty spot on.

I like our guy.

He is from Stillwater and has been around the Okie State program all his life. I sat next to his folks at a tournament and asked if he was going to be a cowboy. They said he’s not committed anywhere and they are not going to push him to go to OkSt. They want him to have a “college experience” and make his own decisions. Also, him and Angelo Ferrari are pretty tight. I think he should be on our radar. He’s really, really good and super slick.
He is very much on the radar.

I’m pretty sure Ira and Bob sometimes rub elbows at social events….

Spoons, you are trying to make this out to be me taking pot shots at Bob. I complimented Bob numerous times and will continue to do so. You are trying to make this out to be something it simply is not. You have an alterior motive here it seems.

As for a "beef" with Tom I've said numerous times here I believe he is one of the top two to three head coaches in all of wrestling. I do however think just like everyone else in all walks of life the staff can make improvements. I also think 99% of people shy away of pointing out any of those and childishly poke fun of the people that do.

I think Bob has a platform that I and 99.9% of the people here don't have and as a stauch Iowa wrestling fan I'm just trying to point out the things that I think can help Iowa wrestling to someone that can carry those along.

The only motive here is to support Bob and all he's done for the program. You have showered him with compliments but the comment about him being a problem remains untouched. I don't have the foggiest idea who you are, nor do I care.

I think you missed the point when I mentioned your "beef" with Tom Brands. Your comments above are on point--we agree. He owns this program and is fair game for criticism. Our opinions on the need for recruiting to improve are also aligned. So the continued responses to my posts about how recruiting needs to improve is preaching to the choir.

Your first mistake was thinking Spooner was going to be courteous to your opinion. He gets some things right sometimes but mostly he is an instigater and message board bully and no one is allowed to have an opinion unless it aligns with his... I don't post here as much as I used to partly because of him. It is exhausting to post an opinion or a thought and constantly be attacked for it and I have reported so many of his posts over the years it's amazing he is still here.. He will fight with you for a week so he can get the last word in or prove he is right just to make you look bad...

I can't imagine going through life so thin skinned that a gomer on a message board bothers me that much. LOL. Trust me--I don't take myself as seriously as you take me.

"With that said I honestly think that part of the problem is when large donors like you don't think there is a problem that needs to be worked on."

....."but the comment about him being a problem remains untouched."

You've had how many responses in regards to this comment? Bob has even responded with no mention. Are you sure you really aren't my wife in disguise with this over exaggeration? A little reading comprehension would tell you that isn't a problem with Bob per say. It is that he's not seeing the current as of today problem with recruiting is all. Lighten up, Francis.....

Anyway, you've already drug me in much further than I promised in my first response to you. With that good day, sir. :)

This isn't complicated. Hawks really really need to start winning individual titles. Excluding Spencer, the hawks have zero since 2017.

Sure, PSU is dominating recruiting, but they're dominating recruiting because they can point to their individual titles. They are far and away the best place to win a title and that's what elite recruits want to do. The current score is 34-7 since Cael's first title in 2011. It's a blowout.

Until TNT start producing on Saturday night, you can expect them to keep losing head to head recruiting battles with PSU more often than not.
Huge bump.
This is the gorilla in the room.
We had some real pants pooping under the bright lights..

Just happy you came back to get that last word in. Keep that streak alive Brother...

This is very much a chicken and the egg issue. Stock the lineup with more top 10 PFP wrestlers and you’ll win more individual titles. The reason we haven’t won more in recent years is that we haven’t had a ton of top 10 PFP recruits. Yes, Alex had some tough luck at Nationals and Eierman and Kem lost by a hair, but it’s a numbers game. Land more top 10 guys and the individual titles will follow.

He's even got the Ferrari Flex after winning Ironman. Super slick on his elbow control ducks. We'll just ignore the OSU headgear he's sporting - Cornell fans don't hold it against Yianni wearing Hawkeye headgear when he was young and dumb, we won't fault Lockett ;).

And also the interview after the win. Sounds like Angelo was his main training partner when they were at Stillwater together. Also says OSU is his #1 school, but is keeping his options open. (this is all during the 2021/2022 season when he was a Freshman and Angelo was a Sophomore.)

That was the knock on Gable. Not a great coach, he just got all the best guys.
We have guys winning big tens then losing Nats.
Say what you want, PSU has looked looked pretty good on the national stage.

It's all about talent. Recruit the talent and you'll win more individual titles. I've followed Gable from the time he was an assistant to Kurdelmeier, and I never heard anyone say he wasn't a great coach. I'm sure some haters did, but they had no idea what they were talking about.

To the contrary, Gable was actually known for taking less heralded recruits and turning them into AA's and national champs. We saw countless upsets in the Fieldhouse and Carver under Gable, where a highly ranked opponent would come in and lose to our underdog. We also had quite a few guys like Darryl Weber, Jesse Whitmer, and others come in without lots of national accolades and become national champs and AA's specifically due to Gable's coaching ability.

We've had a few guys win Big Tens and lose at Nationals -- mainly Marinelli, Kemerer, and Eierman. Not exactly a huge pattern. More than anything, we haven't had enough top 10 PFP guys. I didn't say a word about PSU. They obviously have looked good at Nationals, precisely because their guys winning national titles have been elite recruits.

this dude is a PSU fan right?

Way off base, Angry Willie is the best. He told me to keep sucking Pyles' d**k one time and I died laughing; I like fiery personalities! Willie is good for the sport. BTW, Willie's a good guy, even though he thinks Bud heavy tastes good.
Hey if anyone can smell Pyles d**k on someone's breath it's Willie. I'd trust him on that more than his recruiting predictions.

You haven't been watching any longer than I have. And yes ppl bitched about Gable won cause he "got all the best guys." No one at Iowa said that but the Iowa hate goes back to Gable days. But you knew that since you have followed so long.
As for the rest of your post you literally were making my point.
Part of this was some ridiculous seeding back in the day. Part of it was Gable knew how to get peak performances from all of his guys.
He had some real characters come through.

Well, then, I guess we agree. Fantastic!

The main point I was trying to get across is that winning individual titles is more about talent than performing on the big stage. I don’t think it’s a matter of our guys not being able to come through for all the marbles as much as needing more of the elite recruits whose talent will win out in the finals more often than not.

Troy Spratley in the portal. Solid get if we can’t/don’t get Nagao
WTF is happening to the Gophers?????
They are a train wreck.
McKee hang around too long? Or is Zach Sanders the issue?

Eggum is living on borrowed time. Their nine, or is it eight, fans can't be happy.

Imo, either Spratley or Ayala would be a small 133 for the 23/24 season.
But fascinating, none the less.

I couldn't resist, had to see what the Minny forum is saying. Early rumors have Spratley to Okie St. With as much as they've struggled recently...I'm not seeing it.
