Iowa vs. ISU a Night game! on BTN

I'm going to give LC a pass on this one. If you don't think the atmosphere before and after the 2002 ISU game was ugly, then you weren't there. I was in it, and was proud to have contributed to its ugliness in the moment. But I have no interest in ever being witness to that again, and certainly don't want to drag my kids through it to a game now.

There is a difference between an atmosphere that is electric (PSU/ASU/Minnesota last year), and one that is ugly. Anytime ISU is involved it will be ugly, and I'm not just talking about the females on their campus.

Unclear about your comment of having been "in it"... Are you saying that you played in that particular game and if so, how would you be able to assess anything about the environment of that game surrounding the area prior to or even immediately following the game?

If, on the other hand, you are speaking from a perspective of a fan then your opinion is worth about the same as anyone else. I was at the game and as far as I am concerned, the atmosphere was not noticeably worse than several other Iowa-isu games - particularly those taking place in roughly the same period of time in Ames, Iowa. It is what it is - a largely over-hyped event that occurs once a year near the beginning of the season and then is generally allowed to fade away for another eleven months or so.

I traveled to Iowa City, enjoyed tailgating with several friends, family and acquaintances, attended the game itself and drove back home. Disappointed with the outcome of the game, but otherwise unaffected by the game or its atmosphere.

You must have tailgated in the wrong spot then.

And of course I didn't play in the game, don't be an idiot.

There's always going to be an edge for this game. That's an unfortunate aspect of rivalries. Which is why the people in charge should do what they can to defuse the situation. Instead, they schedule it so people can drink all day and then it will be dark. It's crazy.

What compounds the problem is the trend in recent years for people to go to the game without any intention of going to the game. In other words, to descend upon the host site for partying but make no attempt to buy a ticket. IIRC, some people estimated there were more than 25K at Ames tailgating last year who never attended the game itself. I don't know how accurate that is, but I know in previous years there were one hell of a lot of people still in the parking lots while the stadium was packed.

Speaking of an idiot, look in the mirror.

I tailgated in the same vicinity as I have for years.

I was also at the 2002 ISU game. We tailgated in the Kinnick press box lot, and I don't really remember any ugliness (of course, I was hammered myself so might not have known if I had).

I heard the Fieldhouse lot was a disaster that day - people throwing full beers around, etc.

The only thing I remember that got a little ugly was when the ISU band decided to march through the Kinnick lot after the game playing their fight song. I get it, somebody thought "let's really rub this one in!" and I'll acknowledge it worked, but it backfired when they were showered with beer and even some cans/bottles. Why did the band ever think that was a good idea, I wonder? To be totally clear, it was the Iowa fans throwing things that were in the wrong, but you have to anticipate that and choose your battles.

That is low class, and not surprising the beer-throwing happened.

If the HMB were to march around Jack Trice after beating ISU, I'd expect them to have beers thrown at them.

They'll do that around the same time the O-Line takes off their jerseys and poses for a shirtless picture in the end zone.

Since I live fairly close to Ames I have taken in the atmosphere of the Iowa/Iowa State game at Jack Trice quite a bit. Frankly, I've been more embarrassed by the behavior of Iowa fans than anything I've seen from Iowa State fans (yes, I'm sure there have been idiot ISU fans I've been fortune to miss running into over the years).

The worst was 2005. There was an Iowa fan (assuming college age) on the corner of now University and 16th St. holding a huge sign that read "Iowa State sucks more dick than Paris Hilton." My mother had the misfortune of reading that sign along with the many kids walking about with their parents that day. A friend of mine reported having full beer cans chucked at her and her friends because they were wearing Iowa State clothes.

And that was a day game.

I think things have changed just a bit since then.

The FH lot was one of the prime spots back in the day, if that's the one I'm thinking of (also thinking of the 2003 Michigan game for tailgating infamy), but it's been gone for a while now and most of the spots have been spread out further away from the stadium.

The Minnesota game last year was a great atmosphere, though I suppose different opponents breed different environments.

There will be less fans this time around as well right? All those that refuse to accept mediocrity and not sink another dollar into Iowa Football as long as Ferentz is coach will no longer be around Kinnick.

I agree the Minnesota game was a great atmosphere. We actually tailgated with quite a few Gopher fans and I thought they were all pretty cool.
