Iowa vs UConn 12pm ABC

Defense was great for a couple of quarters then UConn could not miss last 7 minutes. They are closer to a contender than I thought after KState game. We should have tried to get Martin open. I''m not sure she took a three after one to go up 11.

Amazing that Iowa is this close when Clark not shooting well.
The supporting cast didn't play like #22 was the only one that could do anything in order for them to even have a chance to be competitive, for a change.

They did that so much down the stretch last year that it finally bit them in the NCAA Tournament and they lost to Creighton........

Uconn wins 86-79

11-0 run and a 10-0 run. That’s what killed us. We got tired and lazy, and the timeouts came way too late. If you are only going to play 5 the majority of minutes, then you have to use your timeouts for rest, especially when you see the effort lacking. No idea what she was waiting for.

To really take it to another level Iowa needs an athletic forward and a really good 2 guard to go with Clark.
They also need to stop letting Clark run Iso Ball.

It's not working against good defensive teams. She can't turn the corner against good defenders and if she does, there's help from a big because we stand and watch when Clark dribbles and dribbles and dribbles trying to beat the defense 1 on 5, and if she does happen to get to the basket, she'll miss half her shots trying too hard to sell contact, and then on the rare chance where she decides mid drive that she's gonna kick it out instead, the pass isn't always clean because she's doing it out of control.

That 2nd half and how teams guarded her in the postseason last year are the primary reasons why it's time to start viewing ole #22 as a tad overhyped at this point in her Junior season.........

Facts are facts.

But getting off my rant for a sec and going back to my original point, Bluder needs to draw up better offensive sets to free up Clark, instead of the clear out of the way and let #22 go to work.................because it's not working anymore. At least not against good, defensive teams with an actual pulse.

Need to have them in the end to advance the ball. Damned if you do....

I think Lisa does what Fran does regarding timeouts. They give their players a lot of freedom and believe they can play through tough spots. I think this helps create confidence in players but the down side is they are prone to giving up big runs. Absolutely agree with you that if you’re only going to play 5 then you need to use your timeouts strategically to give them rest.

On the flip side, For the most part Iowa has a bunch of catch and shoot players who cannot beat defenses off the dribble, Clark drawing all the attention is what causes defensive scrambles for the opposition and creates catch and shoot scenarios.
I agree she dominates the ball too much at times but I don’t agree with your overhyped thoughts.

But they didn't.
Really? What’s your point? It’s an observation. Not every game is going to be won or played beautifully. One or two losses early in basketball doesn’t hurt anything. Play good competition, learn what you need to work on and become more consistent.

A lot of things killed us. Iowa missed 10 lay-ups. And UConn just has an overall better roster. Just look at these stats (all advantage UConn):

2nd Chance Points
5 Iowa
15 UConn

Bench Points
2 Iowa
19 UConn

Points in Paint
22 Iowa
30 UConn

Layups
11-23 Iowa
13-18 UConn

They are right here with UConn. They would have killed KState if they played with the same level of intensity as today. They are a top 10 team if they consistently play like today.
Lotta “if’s” there.

What’s the bottom line i.e. what actually happened?

Losses. Which is all that matters.

With the exception of CC GM once in a while), Iowa does not have anybody that can beat their defender and take a jump shot.

Did we watch the same first half? Nika Muhl is one of the best perimeter defenders in women's college basketball and Clark torched her for most of the half off the dribble. Clark needs to pass up some of the off-balance threes and attack the basket more.

Martin and Marshall seem to play well against UConn. Hope to meet the Huskies again in the NCAA. I don't think Iowa was outplayed. It took several missed Iowa layups and unconscious shooting from UConn in the 4th quarter for them to win the game. Of course one can also say Kate Martin was unconscious.

I thought 3 starters played well, but the other 2 not so much. Also, not using the bench more in the second half was a bad decision. JMO

UConn's strategy was to take out Czinano, and they had the players to do it. Maybe that's why Warnock, Marshall and Martin all had wide open shots. Probably the same two years ago when they played in the Sweet Sixteen matchup. Still, Czinano should have made a couple of layups, Clark too. Would have been a different game at the end.

It is. They were fronting Czinano and always had a far side defender playing somewhere behind her. That made entry passes nearly impossible, because the bounce pass wasn't there, but the lob in really wasn't either. It's also why Martin was open so much with significant time to shoot.

Gabby? She can’t beat anyone off a dribble. Her only hope is a scramble sort of situation where she ends up with an open kick

Geez tough crowd. UConn was the national runner up last year. I’ve seen Iowa play Baylor twice, UConn twice, Maryland however many times….we hardly ever can hang with these kinds of teams. Today, we held our own.

This game was not a poor reflection of this team. I’ve done quite a bit of looking around in Twitter / Reddit and the takeaways for us are very, very positive. People expected us to be trampled by — best case — 20. Influencers with podcasts, YouTube shows, etc (including many UConn fans) — most of whom were firmly on the “overrated” train — are impressed with what they saw today.

This game felt huge, like a tourney game, but it wasn’t. This was preparation for NC state, ISU, MD, Michigan, OSU, Indiana, and the NCAA tourney. Few people are gonna vote us below #10, especially if everyone else #4-10 keep losing as much as they are.

Honestly we did way more than I thought we could, but still have a TON of room for growth. Stuelke, Affolter, O’Grady were basically nonexistent today, imagine how much better we can/will be when the bench gets into a rhythm (remember….the season is very young still). You can see this team doing the work, addressing problems in real time. We were never going to win this game, but we looked really good while losing.

BTW — I can’t be the only one who’s noticed that in other recent games, Bluder has been trusting Stuelke more and more… you can tell she thinks it’s only a matter of time for her to break through. She must be doing exciting stuff in practice to give her the green light on those drives.

I know that an L is an L, but for a team not named UConn, Stanford or South Carolina, an L like this early in the season can be very valuable. They literally have rosters full of McDonalds AAs, they’re gonna grab those 1 seeds. That fourth 1 seed is very much still in the air and we are looking like we aren’t gonna let it go without a fight.

Once in a while she does get open (this year) and shott 15-foot shot. No, she is not a threat typically off the dribble.
