Iowa WBB 2025 Recruiting Thread

Sounds like K-State, but we’ll see. 🤞

It does not appear Speiser has found her exact fit (whatever that is), so IMO she will not be a Hawkeye.

For a longtime fan Shik hardo believe your Levi of pessimism.
It’s not necessarily the end of the world. Class of 2024 was huge. Jan seems to have raised her expectations and isn’t just extending offers to anyone, she likely has good reason for it. But it seems all of the main targets we have been following are simply trending the wrong direction. It’s possible that there is another target or 2 out there keeping their cards to themselves which we’re unaware of, but at this point that seems more and more unlikely. It’s mid July.

After she made that statement (looking for an exact fit) over a year ago and had visited Iowa three times, I felt Iowa was down the list.

Great three point shooter who would fit in great in Iowa's system. Maybe her preferred major or campus isn't Iowa.

Not sure why anyone wouldn't want to see other schools before confirming their decisions. It's smart, especially if circumstances ever lead you to a later transfer. You've built relationships and already done your shopping.

Regardless, even if athletics wasn't in the mix, wouldn't you want to see what is available to you? Expectations for quick decisions seem odd and selfish, but we all shop differently.

One thing to keep in mind with Spieser is that her visits don't always mean serious interest. She publicly disclosed visits to Iowa, K-State, Arkansas, Kansas, and Missouri. Kansas and Missouri didn't even make her Top 11, and Arkansas didn't make her recent Top 5 (to the extent it actually was a top 5).

At this point Iowa is probably less likely than not to get her, but I don't think it's completely off the table.

I guess I don’t understand why everyone is so pessimistic in regard to Speiser, In the post (#1400) that SunzOutGunzOut made she said she had taken officials to TCU and K.State and was going to take official visits to OSU,UNC and Iowa in the fall, Seems to me she still has strong interest in Iowa unless she changes her mind about visiting.

Im honestly mostly going off hawkbuck’s intel that Iowa is not at the top of her list. I see no reason to think he’s wrong about that when he continues to be spot on.

It’d be different if things had trended positively since then. For example, with Addie Deal there were numerous signs she was trending the right way (some subtle, but the overall picture was clear). From social media to visiting multiple times and engaging with Kyle.

I was a bit more optimistic when Speiser announced a top 5 and was planning to visit Iowa. That would have meant she knew things she wanted in a school and Iowa checked some boxes (and schools outside the Top 5 didn’t). A 1 in 5 shot isn’t bad. But if she is still open to visiting more schools on top of the 5, that just diminishes Iowa’s chances further. It’s always a long shot to get any 5 star recruit. Everyone wants them. Until you get something very telling, IMO there’s no reason to believe they’re warmer to Iowa than any other school.

Speiser knows Iowa. Everyone does rly. We’ve become one of the most high profile programs — if not the most high profile program — in the country in the last two years. She has been to campus multiple times. She knows our personnel and our athletes. If she is still broadening her search rather than narrowing it, I have a hard time believing she will end up in Iowa City. I feel similarly about Hays in this sense.

That said, I hope I’m wrong and that everyone shits all over this post someday! Lol

Speiser likes Iowa, no doubt. It's not 1 or 2 at the top of her list......so I am told. One last tidbit of intel. Greenway to Duke seems to be the consensus from those up North.

Thanks as always Hawkbuck for sharing so much great intel.

Mind if I ask a question? I’m very curious if you think the coaching change is a net negative, net positive, or a wash with our target recruits?

Feel free to ignore me if you can’t provide more insight at this time — no worries if that’s the case.

Jan has led the forefront on recruiting for a long time now. All prospective recruits initial conversations have been with Jan. Especially, the more highly sought after ones. The transition from Lisa to Jan was about as "best case scenario" for Iowa in case of a coaching change as there could be. Certainly, not a net negative. The first year for Jan will be huge moving forward with recruiting. That's why getting the Olson kid was big. Jan has long been respected and liked by those in and peripheral to the recruiting world.

Thank you for your thoughtful (and quick) response! One follow-up question (if I may)....in regard to this statement: "The first year for Jan will be huge moving forward with recruiting."

Just curious if this is to mean that the first year will be a huge test for Jan, or are you predicting she is likely to have a huge year (meaning you think she is likely to be pretty successful)?

Again I do not expect you to necessarily respond and I totally understand that you may have provided all the intel you're willing to at this point. Either way, much appreciated!

Also with regard to recruiting, is Jan’s “first year” the 2026 recruiting class?

Duke???? ugh that would be a major miss for Iowa in more ways than one

Greenway to Duke. Wow..just wow
Duke WBB plays a different style of basket than Iowa.

Iowa led the nation with the top scoring offense by a wide margin last year - more than 90 ppg. As far as I can tell, the consensus seems to be that Jensen will continue the Bluder fast-pace / transition offense (with a few possible tweaks).

OTOH, Duke clocked in No 121 in scoring offense (68 ppg) and their coach is known as a defensive specialist. Their offense is a grinder

It’s hard for me to see how Greenway fits Duke.

The fit might be the education she’ll receive.

I am referring to success, on the court (wins), this upcoming season. That is why the addition of Olson is huge. Need to stay relevant to keep those top rated potential recruits interested in your program.

1. An Iowa degree has value but I will acknowledge that Duke has more prestige. Don’t know what career path she prefers ( ….,I didn’t have a “career path” until my early 20s lol).

2. In any event, it is my impression that all these Top50 national recruits want to play pro (WNBA) basketball. I don’t believe Maddyn is any different.

3. Greenway is on a trajectory to be one of the most prolific scorers in USA WBB high school history. She excels in an uptempo offense .. as evidenced by her career so far. Duke WBB is not uptempo, to say the least — it’s like a 5 star WR favoring Iowa over Oregon or some other high octane offense.

With Greenway’s height, she may struggle in her W journey. Like HVL to LSU, I wouldn’t be shocked if she is looking to go somewhere where she can become a defensive specialist. Despite our success, Iowa is still known for its defensive liabilities as much as its offensive excellence. A lot of people truly live and die by “defense wins championships” — that certainly includes Kara Lawson. Looks like she has brought Greenway over to that camp in any case.

I wonder if the legend of cc is scaring off some recruits, knowing that no one is going to be able to top what she did and don't want to be compared to her. 🤷‍♀️
I'd think the opposite to some degree. Olsen clearly saw the potential and opportunity in the wake of CC22.

Wow. Jan continues to identify diamonds in the rough. Had her eyes on Krstevski, and Koupal, Henderson all before their stock skyrocketed. It’s too bad it hasn’t paid off (at least in these two classes).
Koupal had an IU offer in April 2023, among others. How exactly was Jan on her early?

I’ve considered this as well. I’ve also wondered if that girl that stayed home and went to Washington we missed out on was influenced by Caitlin as well, but was instead inspired to stay home to try to do “Caitlin things” at her home state school. I could see other elite players doing this, which would help level the playing field with recruiting and make things even more competitive. Not necessarily a bad thing if you ask me.
