major winter storm on Xmas eve?

Damn that is odd, I’d be a little concerned about your water and sewer pipes freezing. Friend of ours had their vertical sewer pipe freeze in an exterior wall a number of years ago and that was an unholy disaster.
Electric or propane space heaters near pipes help alleviate that concern.

We were some of he 187,000 peeps in North Carolina without power this morning. Out from 3 am till 1:30 pm.
I had the trusty basement wood stove jumping off the floor with good seasoned locust. Man, that beast has been good to us over the years.
It was 9 degrees with ferocious winds and a dusting of snow. We are going to be down to 3 tonight, but the snow is gone and winds seem to be calming.
Stay warm y’all and safe travels.

holy shit it’s cold

Took the son and dog for a hike in the woods behind our house. Even with all the layers and ski masks we could only handle 30 minutes. My gloves are supposed to be rated to -30 and my fingers were numb. We imagined we were walking on Mt Everest.

Stupid chocolate lab could care less

Drove over 100 miles in central Iowa today and road my fatbike 20 miles.

A blizzard should mean I can’t see shit. I shouldnt be able to see the grain elevator two miles away from my living room. Which I can.

But at least the pussies and old lady’s had something to fear.

It was too cold to snow as much as they predicted. The ditches had no snow in them so the drifts were not high enough to cause whiteouts.
Did you take a ride today?

The KCC wind turbine is roughly a quarter mile away from the Kum & Go on Kirkwood Blvd in CR. I'm eating at the Taco Depot next door.

I can't see the turbine at all. It's not snowing out.

So THIS is what a ground blizzard looks like.

Wow.

Roads aren’t terrible in town but the moment you hit an open field of some sort holy cow. Good thing there’s enough buildings to have some sort of resemblance of which way is which.

So I drove to Wal-Mart. It's nasty. The roads are not slick. It's so windy and cold the drifts are not forming on the roads as much. There is some bad visibility for sure

One thing I noticed: There is dust all over. The snow looks dirty.

I’ve been out and about in central iowa a few times yesterday and today because we are hosting family tomorrow night…It might be the most miserable cold I can ever remember. Yesterday I got in the car and it said 38 in the garage…by the time we were 2 miles from home it had dropped to -12 and the winds were ridiculous. Shoveling my driveway was also a bad decision.

@torbee this is your last chance for your ride along tonight to prove the cold doesn't bother you. We go on duty at 2230 until 0700. We will start our shift with multiple people stuck on gravel roads that need our help. We then drive there and decide if we can walk to them through thigh high drifts to access them and try to provide assistance that we can't provide. We will then go assist many semis that broke down because their diesel is gelling. They will ask for assistance from mechanics that aren't available due to the weather and it being a Holiday weekend. Throw a couple of accidents where you will stand on a 4 lane highway to direct traffic for hours. It is allowed to get into the squad car when traffic slows to warm up to prevent frostbite. Oh forget about any breaks and you won't be happy with your wage.

Alliant just curtailed us at work in CR so we'll just be running on generators. Usually a summer occurrence, never heard of this in the winter

The part of capitalism that keeps teacher and public servant wages so low sucks shit.

Just dropped into the 40s here at Tradition Manor, on the way down to the upper 20s. Got all the tender plants moved inside or covered. Not really worried about tonight, but it's not going to get very warm tomorrow, and then it's back to below freezing for maybe six or eight hours tomorrow night? The covers will be less effective tomorrow night as there won't be as much heat in the ground.

I hope the earth tilts to 24.5 degrees so you ****ers get some more cold.

I’m getting ready for it to be 20 degrees here in Jacksonville Friday night which is very extreme for us.
We have houses that aren’t insulated like up north and the heat pumps run nonstop. 🥶
I expect a $300 electric bill.
There is a joke in here somewhere about how to stay warm.

S*** just got real.

Drove from Des Moines down to KC, now venturing over to St. Louis to get down to the Gulf Shores. Roads were fine but that wind in Iowa was blowing us around. Have a high roof passenger van, the thing is a sail.

I made it back alive. damn wind is blowing towards my garage door so I had to go 4 wheel backing out. damn near slid thru the first round a bout. But I endeavored to persevere.

Currently 9 degrees here in Northern Virginia, feels like -10. I get that's it's probably a lot colder for all you in Iowa, but this is pretty cold for me.
