major winter storm on Xmas eve?

Drove on a country road just north of Ankeny around 5 this afternoon. Couldn’t see more than 1-2 car lengths ahead of me due to the high winds and blowing snow. Add in the brutal cold, and I’d say this blizzard is living up to the hype.

Plus the roads are crap. Not sure what the temperature threshold is, but whatever they put down on the roads doesn’t seem to be working.
I mean below zero I don’t think there is a lot that does work.

What's the read in Eastern Iowa? We were originally planning to drive down from MN today but are delaying it til tomorrow.

We had to have guys come I to work this morning and our crew could barely make it in. Sure we didn’t get hammered with snow, but it is dangerous AF out. Mother Nature is flexing her muscles bigly.

As this is my first winter with a heat pump what is emergency heat
It should be a mode on your thermostat. There are coils in your air handler that heat up like a conventional heater. When air passes over those coils, it is heated so you actually feel hot air coming out of your vents. It will smell like it's burning the first time it runs from the dust on the coils but that will go away.

Thanks! Turning it on now.

My parents are in NW Ohio. They have only slightly better conditions.

My elderly aunt in Alabama has 19 degrees outside. There were some flurries but it’s mostly wind chill. It’s a wool socks kinda day for sure.
I know you Iowa folks are more used to it than we Southerners but just stay warm and Merry Christmas 🎄

I’m getting ready for it to be 20 degrees here in Jacksonville Friday night which is very extreme for us.
We have houses that aren’t insulated like up north and the heat pumps run nonstop. 🥶
I expect a $300 electric bill.
Why aren't the houses down there insulated very well?

That’s mostly older homes, but the newer ones are built under updated building codes - and generally it was a Florida issue.
The least insulated home we ever owned was in Southern California, by the way.

Believe it or not my house was built in 1910 and has no insulation in the walls, but the furnace is keeping up.

In WV south of Pittsburgh. 3 degrees, Real Feel -20. Supposed to drop another 15 degrees this evening.

This is what is going to drive me to retire. Last night at 2am on a 4 lane highway that was drifting, I was going between 30-40 which was the proper speed for the conditions. I see a car southbound at a high rate of speed. I activated my radar it was going 72. Driving like the road conditions were normal and not a care in the world.
We drove from Milwaukee Wednesday night. Snow picked up pretty strong near Iowa City. Slow down to about 50 to 55 mph. Several semi's riding our bumper in a hurry to pass. Had to be doing 70 to 75. Met up with them latter near outlet mall. Trailers in the ditch also at least one of them blocking a lane nearly jackknifed it. Crazy.
Not too bad until we turned off on 21. Then it was 30 to 35 mph the rest of the way to Ottumwa.

Made the trip into the office for a bit, left less than an hour and a half later, and visibility was one million times worse. Sounds terrible out, certainly worse than yesterday.

anybody out in CR or IC area? would like to get to gym a couple of miles away but its not crucial obviously.

We're not sure. A whole section of our neighborhood is out. The gas company is looking into it. We'll probably got to a hotel if it's not fixed this afternoon.
Damn that is odd, I’d be a little concerned about your water and sewer pipes freezing. Friend of ours had their vertical sewer pipe freeze in an exterior wall a number of years ago and that was an unholy disaster.
