major winter storm on Xmas eve?

The drive into work this morning on 380 through town was not too bad but there was still a lot of snow blowing around. Most people were keeping speed around 45. Not looking forward to the drive home tonight or the drive tomorrow when the wind really picks up.
380 and 80 in IC were not good this morning. I’m not sure I ever saw enough of the pavement to know if I was in a lane, or on the shoulder

Dude. I will be riding my fatbike.

30 years of commuting to work out of town between 25-50 miles one way. Today wasn’t top 100.

I do invite those that drive like shit in bad weather to stay home.

Slow down and leave enough space between you and next car so you don’t need brake. It isn’t rocket science.

Kwwl called it a once in a generation storm. That’s either ratings hype or everybody was born yesterday.
The once in a generation storm was over the top for sure. Again, the concern is the wind for good duration of time. Extremely potent low pressure system we're seeing here. (probably the reason for the once in a generation hype) The worst of that has not begun yet.

The coldest i have been, Greenland, 10' in the air changing the generator on our C-130. No winter gear and some idiots bring us a ground heater, that just added to the 40-50 mph winds and temps well below 0. It only took an hour to thaw out after the two of us finished.
What did you do to thaw out, spoon?

Face it, calling it a "bomb" cyclone makes you watch. If they called it a "happy time circus" cyclone you wouldnt give two shits. Its a winter storm in Iowa, bundle up, drive slow, buy the last pack of hot dog buns and quit over hyping a winter storm.
Not all winter storms are created equally. Some tornado watches produce Parkersburg, some produce a little bird-fart tornado. This winter storm had higher end potential due to the quality of the system they're dealing with. The hype was on the basis of blizzard conditions -- a good chunk of Iowa is in a blizzard warning that starts tonight.

So now someone came up with the wrong name?

I’m getting ready for it to be 20 degrees here in Jacksonville Friday night which is very extreme for us.
We have houses that aren’t insulated like up north and the heat pumps run nonstop. 🥶
I expect a $300 electric bill.

High of 58 in central Alabama today with light rain. When I wake up tomorrow it is going to be 16. Highs will be in the upper 20’s to mid 30’s through Monday with lows in the teens with single digit wind chills.

You are right about the heat pump. Mine will be running damn near nonstop for a few days. Upper 50’s and 60’s return by next Thursday.

Just drove out in CR. Weak stuff. Winter weather advisory stuff
That's because we're not dealing with ice or 2 feet of snow. Part of what made this a really big deal is that you'd have people traveling distances on highways for the holidays. High winds and no visibility is a big deal.

section of I80 closed

I-80 near the 216 MM EB is currently CLOSED due to a multi semi crash with injuries.

Travel is NOT advised on I-80 in between Des Moines and Iowa City!
Link? We will be traveling soon and I am trying to thread the needle, and am looking for information sources…

Hypothetically speaking, as a non-Illinois resident, if one were to wander into gummy territory, what are we talking about in terms of goods and pricing? This hypothetical person wouldn't be looking to spend $500, but rather to get a representative sample of what the good people of Illinois have to offer.
IIRC you can get 250 mg per person. Depending on if they are running any specials, you should be able to get outta there easily for 200 bucks or less. However, Idk if they price gouge over the holidays or not. Last year during March madness I spent less than a hundred bucks for 250 mg which included a tip. Happy shopping!

In town it’s not awful aside from literally bone chilling cold. I can see out in the fields blowing and visibility is dropping significantly. I’m sure out of towns is a mess. And it’s just starting to gust here in the corridor.

Cameras all down 80 look fine. Scrolled through them all. Seems dramatic so far.

Don't be afraid to turn on the emergency heat mode if the heat pump won't keep up. Yes, it's more expensive than the heat pump to run but it will only be on for a third of the time.

It's going to start rolling through Houston in a couple of hours and I'm up at work trying to get some admin stuff done. Looks like temps will be in the teens (single digit with the wind chill) but only for one night. Hopefully, the winds don't knock down too many power lines.

Drove over 100 miles in central Iowa today and road my fatbike 20 miles.

A blizzard should mean I can’t see shit. I shouldnt be able to see the grain elevator two miles away from my living room. Which I can.

But at least the pussies and old lady’s had something to fear.

It was too cold to snow as much as they predicted. The ditches had no snow in them so the drifts were not high enough to cause whiteouts.

Blizzard warning starts tonight and goes through Saturday. Pay attention.

Unprofessional and he sounds like an entitled pussy. Unless it was a planned schtick.
It's KWWL in Waterloo, how many people do you think watch their morning news? And yes, he was having fun with it. Probably had more fun doing that than covering the Iowa game yesterday.

I always feel bad for our state’s troopers during these events. Putting your own lives on the line to help the incredibly stupid, ignorant and naive among us.
This is what is going to drive me to retire. Last night at 2am on a 4 lane highway that was drifting, I was going between 30-40 which was the proper speed for the conditions. I see a car southbound at a high rate of speed. I activated my radar it was going 72. Driving like the road conditions were normal and not a care in the world.

Drove on a country road just north of Ankeny around 5 this afternoon. Couldn’t see more than 1-2 car lengths ahead of me due to the high winds and blowing snow. Add in the brutal cold, and I’d say this blizzard is living up to the hype.

Plus the roads are crap. Not sure what the temperature threshold is, but whatever they put down on the roads doesn’t seem to be working.
