major winter storm on Xmas eve?

High of 36° with a low of 18° here in the western panhandle of Florida on Saturday.
and that’s probably considered pretty chilly, no?

I would trade for Floridas weather any day of the week. It gets hot and miserable up here during the summer too. Hurricanes are a bummer, but we get random severe storms, floods and tornados too. I’d take my chances with hurricanes.

That’s balls cold for us.

Yeah. That's cold for here. And just like your winters are consistently cold, our summers are consistently hot. I remember last year when you had a heat warning while it wasn't as hot as it was here. Heat indexes 110+ are so common no one pays attention.

It's about that time of year where they recycle the annual "iguana/lizards falling from trees" story.

What's the forecast looking like for Wednesday night? In Eastern Iowa. Like the Quads through What Cheer area?

I don't think it's suppose to start until 9-11pm so I would say travel earlier than that
Well they're saying the heavy stuff isn't starting in Wisconsin until Thursday afternoon. Was wondering if the heavy stuff isn't due in Iowa until Thursday early morning. Like 3 am or later?

Iowa City has cancelled school already for Thurs and Fri. Dug my boots and bibs out of the basement and brought them upstairs. Guess fire up the snowblower a little later and hope that still works. I'm ok on booze but better play it safe and get some more here after work.

I’ll also be picking up some booze after work this evening lol

Excluding the 2021 freeze and power grid failure in Texas, the coldest I have ever been is a winter's day in Tally. Of course, that could have also been due to the tenement that I lived in during college.
I think the humidity and proximity to ocean air makes a huge difference.

I remember looking at the temperature prediction for the 2009 Orange Bowl and it was high 30s/low 40s, so I just wore a sweater and light jacket and froze my ass off! That damp, wet air makes you feel super freezing. That game was colder than the game in Madison in late November.

Was able to get my sons flight home from Baltimore changed from Thursday morning to Wednesday night. THe bad thing is instead of flying into Cedar Rapids, (5 minutes from home), we have to pick him up in Des Moines. Hopefully the trade off of us having to drive 2 hours while the storm starts is worth it. Seems like by Thursday morning his flight may have been cancelled.

Hmm, where are you seeing this? I expected them to, just haven't seen the annoucement. Usually get a text or phone call!

They are still in school? Hell, even at work we were given this Friday.

I think there is something to that. Lima never got much below 50 degrees in the winter, but we were damp and really f-ing cold all the time.

School was already planned for Dec. 22 and 23rd? Makes it tough to travel for Christmas.

Yeah it went real late this year since Christmas is on a Sunday, but it seems like half the kids are out sick anyway. No big deal if you wanted to pull them to leave a little early.

We are driving up from Little Rock to Branson Thursday AM for the polar express train with the kids on Thursday night. Then was going to stay at Big Cedar and head to Iowa City Friday. I know no one knows this but wondering how the roads will be and if they will actually be drivable Friday. Debating on leaving tomorrow and skipping the train and big cedar but if its only 3-6 inches on Wed night/Thursday feels like by Friday it should be okay.

Looking like the snow will have pushed east by Friday. Southern Iowa with less snow forecast anyway. The problem, though, Friday, will be blowing snow. You could possibly have zero visibility situations on highway driving. Thursday is out. Front will pass sometime overnight Wed or Thursday. Once that happen high winds, white out conditions and snow.

You may be able to sneak in late friday once the wind starts to die down. I'd stick to major interstates. Still looks dicey though with the wind and extreme temps. Dangerous driving.

edits: wind looks bad all day Friday. 20mph with gusts higher.

Personally I wouldn't risk the roads shutting down Thurs/Friday. It only takes one accident to really screw things up. And even though the trend is for less snowfall, they are talking white out conditions from about 10am Thursday through Saturday morning due to intense winds.

Agreed, it is going to be bad.

Could possibly beat it up tomorrow. Snow starts in DSM around 5pm and IC around 8 by current projections. I'd leave at like 5am or something tomorrow morning though to avoid the mess.

Safe play is for sure to go tomorrow.....I hate I am burning $500 on the train and hotel as they have no refunds but then again, my families life is worth more than that and it's only money. If we didn't have that already paid for this wouldn't even be a debate and would just leave tomorrow. Probably still will based on the feedback here and the forcast...

You couldn't just stay somewhere Friday night and roll in Sat?

Yep
Looks like I missed some geek calling a bunch of thunderstorms last dec in iowa a derecho from my balcony in Fl.
Huge miss. My bad.
It literally was the definition of what a derecho is. It's not just some dude calling it one.

The equivalent of what you're saying would be arguing that an EF1 tornado isn't really a tornado because it's not as bad as an EF5. The EF5 in this scenario would be the 2020 derecho, the EF1 being the December derecho.
