Thanks geek.

You couldn't just stay somewhere Friday night and roll in Sat?
Yep could do that and talked about it. It’s a really quick trip back though as I need to be back sometime Monday so just makes for a really short trip but a possibility.

He's just mad because he was trying to make a poster look dumb, but in reality he was the dumb one. Honestly, it's a thing of beauty.
Why do u guys even bother. He's not entertaining in an OIT sort of way. OIT would have some quirks that made him enduring. Or self deprecating humor.

Excluding the 2021 freeze and power grid failure in Texas, the coldest I have ever been is a winter's day in Tally. Of course, that could have also been due to the tenement that I lived in during college.

This.

The winters I spent in Tallahassee were much worse than the winters I spent in the Virginia Beach/Norfolk area.

Even though it was colder in Virginia, IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO BE THAT COLD IN FLORIDA!

It literally was the definition of what a derecho is. It's not just some dude calling it one.

The equivalent of what you're saying would be arguing that an EF1 tornado isn't really a tornado because it's not as bad as an EF5. The EF5 in this scenario would be the 2020 derecho, the EF1 being the December derecho.
You would have better luck explaining meteorology to an actual canine.

I am sadly certain that because people will want to get to places for Christmas, there will be some taking chances they would normally not take. And snowbound people are going to die of cold or carbon monoxide poisoning in their vehicles. Hope I am wrong.

I remember a 13 degree morning in Tally as a teenager.

The coldest i have been, Greenland, 10' in the air changing the generator on our C-130. No winter gear and some idiots bring us a ground heater, that just added to the 40-50 mph winds and temps well below 0. It only took an hour to thaw out after the two of us finished.

We are driving up from Little Rock to Branson Thursday AM for the polar express train with the kids on Thursday night. Then was going to stay at Big Cedar and head to Iowa City Friday. I know no one knows this but wondering how the roads will be and if they will actually be drivable Friday. Debating on leaving tomorrow and skipping the train and big cedar but if its only 3-6 inches on Wed night/Thursday feels like by Friday it should be okay.
Its going to be cold during the snow event which means it will be powder, there are supposed to be 35-40 MPH sustained winds with gusts up to 50 MPH friday. That is blizzard conditions. Complete whiteout, you are stupid if you try because the mercury is supposed to dip below zero with -30 wind chills. If you ditch it you are screwed and placing yourself in harms way.

Last night's runs:

0Z:
GFS: 5-10" with some of the highest values in the 380 corridor

NAM: 2-8" (slacks off in the south with low totals... then a line of heavy totals from S Central IA through Dubuque)

ECMWF: 3-6" (south to north)

12Z:
HRRR: 1-7" (south to north ... big hole of low totals in far SE IA... don't know how good the HRRR is at this, though)

NAM: 2 - 9" (slacks off in the south with low totals... then a line of heavy totals from S Central IA through Dubuque)

I’m doing a 48 hour shift from Friday AM to Sunday AM. Should be lots of fun. Have the extreme cold weather gear out for the festivities. May ask why I’m doing that. The answer is money. I’m on break at the college. Christmas Eve was already double time for the holiday. As a short notice pickup, that gives an additional double time. So basically four times standard pay. The last 8 will be overtime and worth about $150 per hour.

You can buy a lot of cannabis for that kind of scratch!

Well, the blizzard warnings just went up. Phone went off, startled me.

I suppose it’s time to fire up the snowblower and dust it off.

Me loves a good storm. Snow, wind, rain, sleet, etc… Bring it.
We are looking at approx. 9 degrees to start Friday or Saturday (I forget which) to solidly freeze the rain/sleet mix from the night before.
Ground will be like marble or granite and the wind will cut thru a lot of clothes. Yay!!

Pretty interesting that they're still not all that certain about snow totals on this. Not really sure it matters once the wind kicks in, too.

Either way, tomorrow through Saturday are gonna suck for anybody that has to go outside.
No doubt. Sounds like the difficulty with this forecast is while there's plenty of moisture/energy with the storm, the artic air is so cold the atmosphere doesn't efficiently make snow so it dries things out. So, you end up with a tug-of-war on whether the moisture or cold air wins out (from most recent models it looks like cold air by just a bit, though still some snow). In any case, it doesn't take much snow to create serious whiteout conditions and that looks inevitable over the next few days into Saturday.

Long line? I’ve heard it’s been a zoo over there.
Let's say hypothetically one were in the quad cities over the holiday weekend and wandered to said store. What is a reasonable expectation in terms of time spent in there?
