No AJ

Sure, it was a bold gambit, but it didn’t just not work out for AJ, it cost the team Chittum. They should have known about the history there and the additional risk.
You want Chittum? I'm not sure I want him seems like a cancer to me.

That’s the part that bothers me most. They lost Chittum due to documented bad behavior by the middle Ferrari. Big bruh never made it to the starting line. Not sure if younger Ferraris will ever be on team. That can’t help recruiting.

What was Tom thinking?

I think its only a little crazy to thing that your only measuring yourself up against the 5 or 6 teams but ok. I still have us as the second best team. I looked back at the past 10 contested NCAA championships only at the top six teams each year. I gave a team 1 point for 6th place and 6 points for 1st place. In my table I have 14 teams with at least 1 point.
Penn State has 54 Points
Iowa has 38 Points
Ohio State has 30 Points
Ok State has 26 Points
Michigan has 13 Points
Missouri has 10 Points

The way I see it Iowa has been the 2nd best team over the past 11 years or so. I don't think 2020 really moves the needle in the analysis that I have done. I again have a hard time moving on from that unless you get Cael to come to Iowa with his whole staff.
Why would Iowa want the trash Penn state coaches

The program needs new non Iowa guys. The loyalty to graduates is great but you need to bring in new ideas, new styles, learn from others. Hwc is just all previous hawks so it’s the same old.
Why? It's worked for 40+ years and keeps us in the top 5 year in and year out. PSU'w run will come to an end eventually, they aways do. Ok St, Iowa etc.

Now bringing in a few new styles isn't a bad thing. But the Hawk formula works and most teams mimic it. It's a recruiting thing and it'll get figured out. The NIL is a game changer and Iowa will figure it out. Carl has it figured out right now, but other teams will catch up.

Serious question - what coaches would you go after?
Only 5 head coaches have won titles since Zalesky's last in 2000, and only 3 since Brands first in 2008.

You aren't getting anyone who has won a title, and unless you are getting Koll, you aren't even getting anyone who had a runner up (Tom Ryan, Bormet). So then you are left hoping an up and comer can make it click - who are you taking? I doubt you get anybody from the PSU staff, and Im not sure who else makes you better.

This is undoubtedly a down year, but Iowa has had a rough 10 or so months. If you want Brands gone, fine, but I really dont think this is a Brands issue.. its just that right now its PSU and everyone else. If Iowa isn't back to podium status in the next year or two, maybe ill feel different
Ben Askren, would be my first call.

Koll

Not everything is about Penn State
Umm ok…..multiple on here have recommended contacting Nolf, Taylor, Casey and even Cael…..yet so many on here say Cael is trash….every other post on here references psu just like every other post on bwi mention Iowa

You're a very patient man. PSU's run has lasted 13 years and there's no reason to think it'll end anytime soon. I have less confidence that Tom will figure it out; he's had 13 years, and absent hitting the jackpot in the portal, the team looks to have some lean years coming up.

If he had just run his mouth and did some pushing he might have been ok. But when he threw the punch and flipped the bird, that got him the hook.

If chittum would have signed in the fall, who knows if they still persue Anthony hard in the spring. I’m sure it helped with Angelo, but Anthony said he told his brother to take all his visits, and not just follow his brother, like he did when he committed to Oklahoma state without taking other visits.

Okay, here's my single post on today's apparent news.

Probably for the best. Like Tom, I really wanted his points. But man, what a DB.

Everyone knew it was a bold gambit. The fact that it imploded was unsurprising. But give kudos to Tom for trying it. He wants to win. So do I. When you're down by 8 in the third period, most people give up. Brands will keep trying to win. In this case, he's got a fat contract through 2029. He doesn't need to go bold. But he did. I like that about him.

To the future.
Well said.

I know nothing about the signing process with Chittum. Just what I read here. But I do know the Ferraris carry some heavy baggage. Luckily AJ can hella dead lift.

Do you guys really think Chittum was the only potential Hawkeye recruit to be turned off by the idea of having the Ferrari clan in tbd same program?

I want wrestlers who wrestle under our coaches and trust them. Chittum clearly didn't have that. I trust TNT to make the decision on the Ferraris
Chittum had plenty of trust until they decided to do business with the very same douchebags who got kicked out of his high school after they got into a fight. That’s like a direct slap in the face.

Patience for sure, but we did just win two titles (covid aside) recently, and PSU has yet to show they can win more than four in a row without punting a year to line things up. Should be opportunities to jump in and take one again. This year is screwed because of gambling, not because of poor recruiting, otherwise it'd be an easy second place again. It doesn't have anything to do with figuring anything out, unless they found a way to get a waiver on the gamblers. Those guys screwed the team, that wasn't Brands doing and if he knew they were going to screw up he wouldn't have had to try and find a quick solution this year, he'd have planned for it three years ago.

He’s gonna either (a) end up on a stretcher, or (b) in a YT gym fail video if he squats heavy like that, maybe both.
Meh, he’s probably fine. Pretty typical low bar squat. Course, he also strikes me as someone who would ego lift. At least he is using safety bars.

If Arnold takes off the redshirt all the replacements for the suspended are better except HWT.

Losing Angelo is gonna hurt. Iowa is gonna have so many holes next year. 33,41,49,57,84,97,285
maybe tom might actually have lower himself and go out and try to recruit for a change.
Taking a beating from who?

The only team to give us any beating is PSU and they're beating the shit out of everyone.
not a problem at all if you are satisfied with continually getting out recruited and just trying to finish in the top 5 or 6 at nationals.

IMO the best and quickest and easiest way to inject life into this program is bringing on new assistant coaches and forking out some HWC funds for bigger senior level athletes.

Moving on from Tom would be a hard reset that could take years to recover from. We're not there yet.

That’s wild. Iowa has a TON of financial resources, top notch facilities, huge tradition, and the Gable tree means there’s a bevy of good coaches to pick from. Any changed shouldn’t be expected to be more than a Blip.

The obvious choice is Ben Askren. He probably wouldn’t consider Iowa but he is a top coach in the country and is consistently churning out elite prospects in the Midwest.

Yeah a guy who’s never coached in college and has been running a club for a decade is an “obvious” choice to take over one of the top 2
Jobs in the country. Please. This job will attract sitting HCs and the very top assistants in the country.

He shat on Flo, noted that the Oklahoma thing was false - that’s why the district attourney dropped it. Some complaining about officiating in final match. Noted that glazier said some very personal things after the match before the altercation.
