*****Official Cubs 2019 thread*****

The Cubs have only three above average players on the batting roster right now and it's doubtful the team will have all of them in five years.

Between Baez, Bryant, Rizzo and Contreras, which one is average/below average?

Easy... WC is average from an over all standpoint. He's got a career BA of <275. That scream above average to you? A SO to Walk ratio above 2 to 1. You seriously think he's above average? Hope Theo didn't consult you when he signed Yu.;)

And I'll even give WC the benefit of the doubt and call him above average. That's four guys on the entire roster. Not getting it done because the supporting cast isn't that great, either.

A slight bit of good news on the development of pitching in the organization, Adbert Alzolay is back. In his two starts with Iowa he has thrown 11 innings with 2 ER and 15 strikeouts. He has legitimate TOR stuff.

Also, a couple guys in double a putting up good numbers. Tyson Miller - 2.13 ERA in 50 innings. Cory Abbot 2.88 ERA in 56 innings. Oscar De La Cruz 2-1 in 4 games coming back from suspension. Between these 3 and Alzolay, Theo will soon have a starter that he drafted/signed in the big leagues.

On a career basis, Schwarber has been an above average offensive player, but he's been down this year so far. Almora has been playing really well lately.

How many other teams are significantly better? You make it sound like there are a dozen other teams with above average bats sitting around on the bench. The Cubs have, by just about any measure, 3 elite bats in the lineup (Bryant, Baez, Rizzo). This year (and 2017) Contreras has been very good, bordering on that kind of elite bat status (he's 13th in wRC+, 10th in wOBA, 20th in WAR this season). That's half the everyday lineup. If Almora continues to develop and Schwarber simply regresses to his career means, that's a really salty lineup.

ARod said last week that WC is probably the best catcher in all of MLB.

Listen... you're more on expert on the Cubs than I am. The only point I'm making is that from my POV, the only potential, long term stars I see are Baez/Bryant/Rizzo. Contreras plays a position where long term, injury free success is difficult.
Imo, the long term success of the Cubs hinges on a good farm system and developing/acquiring pitching. Cubs are severely lacking in that orbit.

As stated earlier, by someone... Theo has made some really shitty transactions recently. And you know my opinion of Maddon handling a pitching staff.
And for the record... most of my close family loves the Cubs and I like Rizzo. I'd would love a Yankees/Cubs WS.:p:p:p

Yeah, Wins Above Average by Position ... Cubs Catchers lead the NL at 1.4 and Philly is in 2nd at 0.7. Catching would not be the issue for the Cubs. Especially Contreras.

Lester getting pounded by the Astro’s JV squad.

We suck again!
Dude... it's the NL. Everybody sucks.

Well, maybe not the LAD.

Could this be the year a team with a losing record wins the NL Central?

This game is another shining example why baseball is headed towards irrelevancy. It’s so ridiculously easy to hit HRs anymore, it’s like watching softball games. Maybe Manfred convinces himself that having the average player hit 25 or 30 homers is a good thing, I think not.

Descalso can’t hit or field. He looks like he’s 50. His ABs against Cole looked like he was swinging in slow motion.
why the hell is happ still at Iowa? He's not any worse than the clowns taking his place!

It's time for the richetts to either start spending or starting unloading. Or we can be like the nats and piss away our best players with nothing to show for it.
I'm not putting it all on the owners, as theo has made many bad moves the past couple years.

Today, Joe Maddon says that the Cubs have to face
the reality that Ben Zobrist might not come back to
the team. Maddon says the Cubs miss his leadership
in the locker room and dugout. They miss him at the
leadoff position with his professional at bats.

He’s being paid 9 million to mope about his divorce. Retire his ass and give that 9mm to an actual closer.

The Astros are an absolute juggernaut. This will be their 3rd straight season with 100+ wins. Jeff Luhnow is the best baseball exec in the game.

They have a flawless roster, no bad contracts, and still have a medium farm system. Yes, they thankfully botched the 2013 draft in taking Appel over Kris Bryant. However, they took Alex Bregman the following draft, so it all worked out.

This three year run for Houston will probably be the best 3 years by an MLB team since the 1998-2000 Yankees.

^^^^^^^^^^ Spot on! No debate.

He is stilled owed around 9 million. Therefore, if he retires, that money could be used on a pitcher.

Agreed. I am a huge Ben Zobrist fan, but he will soon reach the point where he owes the organization a decision.

Without knowing details (check out his wife’s instagram post from a couple days ago — she is STRANGE), I cannot believe that the soon-to-be-former-Mrs. Zobrist filed during what could be his final MLB season.

do we still have to pay him if he just flat out quits or do we get any more space on the payroll?

Zobrist is on the "Restricted List" and therefore, not being paid while away.
sweet so do we have some room to add someone then?
need another good arm in the pen(well need more but.....) :)

All one has to do is look what's happened to St. Louis since he left and what's happened to Houston since he arrived.

St. Louis actually drafts and develops reasonably well - they're still good at developing "major league players". They simply do not draft enough high end stars.

Of course, perpetually drafting roughly 18 and below doesn't help. That's the ultimate test...can you keep the pipeline full drafting at the bottom of the order always.

Luhnow...it will be interesting to see the Astros say 5 years from now. They'll probably still be a good to great team all those years...let's see what happens when he's drafting 25-30 long term to see how good he really is.

He's not being paid while he's on the reserved list and if he retires, he'll be forgoing the rest of his money (unless he and Cubs reach agreement on a package).

Also, look at what happened after the Astros changed their password

I would guess that the cubs gave him until the draft to make up his mind. After the draft is when Kimbrel can be signed without giving up a pick

The Cubs respect BZ a lot, but there won’t be any package other than a nice watch, and an invitation to stay with the organization in some capacity if he retires.
