The number 1 rule when comparing any wrestler to one of the cult wrestlers is make sure the comparison involves a world champion, and make sure you have the cult athlete being better than the world champ. Otherwise the cultists will be here to educate you.
This has nothing to do with world champs or even PSU wrestlers. It has everything to do with someone making a foolish statement in regards to evaluating a recruit.

Didn't see it mentioned anywhere, but CP on FRL yesterday mentioned one of the things that has become apparent is that the claims that such and such "turned down twice as much from other schools" is total BS.

Given that it was mentioned literally every time a guy Iowa "reportedly" had interest in, this was apparent. And of course, not just who said it.

Yeah, he left football because he couldn't cut it. Right...

You do know the Nickal family background, don't you?

Gable didn't play football in HS. Do you really think he couldn't be playing in the NFL right now if he chose a different path?

You just don't know what you're watching. You think you do, but you don't. This started with you calling Ludington a great recruit because of his athleticism (actually, in response to another poster questioning how great of an athlete he was, not me). Again, with the caveat that anybody at that level is obviously a far superior athlete than the average Joe, that's not why he is a great recruit. He does not stand out in that aspect compared to the guys wrestling at this level. He stands out in other aspects. Aspects that have a great impact on wrestling success. But he doesn't stand out on his athleticism.
Gable tried football. He wasn't good enough.

Damn sure do know the Nickal family background.

And I can say the exact same thing to you. You literally don't know what you're watching or what to think when you're watching it. It's one or the other.

The conversation is general athleticism as it compares to wrestling and wrestlers. Period. The fact is, this is america, no one wrestling could be a professional in any other sport. MAYBE gable. And then obviously Stephen Neal and Carleton Haselrig. That's TWO guys out of how many hundreds of thousands of wrestlers who have wrestled d1 EVER?

Be serious bro. Nickal didn't pick football because he wasn't that level of athlete. Cuz if he WAS? He would have played d1/d2 football. I can promise you when it comes to general athleticism and what it actually means to be an athlete in a professional sport not named wrestling, I know far more than you do.

The original argument. you said "Honestly, he reminds me of a lot of other guys Iowa has recruited at this weight - whom have been very successful in college, but probably not standing at the top of the podium."

If you want to say his ceiling is that of a jacob warner, fine. but to say he reminds you of the other guys Iowa has recruited at 197 is patently false, when you consider he's a far better athlete than all of them and doesn't have to rely on a bruising handfight to get to legs.

If you count MMA as a professional sport, which it is, you are wrong!

Thompson will be in Iowa City this weekend. Ludington was notified beforehand about this and he isn't going anywhere.

Wouldn’t expect him to. If nothing else, we have almost zero depth at 184/197 so he’s helpful in that regard.

So far many on this board have passed on:
1) AJ-bad for program
2) Elam-Injury prone
3) TJ-lifestyle/work ethic
4) Thompson-crazy mom

What are we waiting/looking for?
Duh, a 3x National champion, never been hurt and made of steel and goes to church faithfully and walks all grandmas across the street.

Wonder what ever happened with him and Iowa. He was all in on Iowa, and I know it didn’t hurt our effort in recruiting Angelo at the time. We all know why AJ got the permanent ban, but what Anthony did remains a mystery. He was 14 pfp in his junior year of high school. He’s good enough to come in and compete for 157, and 165 next year. Morgan state seems to be a lateral move for him, but I guess better coaching with both Monday’s. Looks like they just reinstated their wrestling program 2 years ago, and is the only predominantly black college to have a D1 program.

It isn’t a total mystery. I believe he was booted from Blair and then later the Okie State room, the latter after the assault. There’s a lot of stories out there about him. Not sure the validity of them but the fact he’s a talented kid who can’t do better than low major programs would lend credence to some of them being true, on some level.

One incident involved a gun, enough said.
