Olympic wrestling results

Never cheered against Gilman, but with all the subtle shade he's thrown at Iowa, thought I'd be okay with him falling short, but the fact is, that made me sick and the look on his face at the end was gut wrenching. Once a Hawk always a Hawk, even if you are kind of douchey.

Ughh.

Oly wrestling is brutal.. zero room for error.

the ruskie took a looonnnggg time to get back to center before the last (or maybe second to last) restart... but it did feel almost like him getting at least one point late on TG was inevitable...

DT up 6-2 over Amine at the break.

Finishes with a tf shortly into the 2nd.

Amine looked good for the 1st 90 seconds. Scored the 1st td. All Taylor after that.

I have a week moratorium on being salty. Root for Gilman and will refer Stevenson as GableDan.

Man TG so close. I thought having to go on the clock was bullshit. And all 1st period, Uguev he's hands to the face and Gilman gets warned. Then in his second match he actually got called on his crap. But he's a winner for sure

Gilman wrestled a great match, he gave Uguev all he can handle. Unfortunately Uguev was banged up and spent after the match with TG so he lost his 1/4 final bout. TG is out
edit: I jumped the gun the coverage did not show the last 15 seconds Uguev pulled another. Magic trick and won TG still alive

Easy draw for David Taylor so far with Joey Jo-Jo Junior Shabadoo and someone who couldn't make the NCAA finals.

Uguev is in the semis. He won with a last second inside trip. Gilman still has a chance to get pulled back in.

Where's MSU to come in and argue with everybody that Gilman doesn't choke?

Yeah I get it "you can't choke if you weren't supposed to beat somebody in the first place" Yada Yada but the fact of the matter is nearly every time I watch Gilman on the big stage he has a match locked up and makes one stupid mistake to keep him from clinching it.

Couldn't imagine going through what the guy has gone through, to be so close so many damn times and just not have that clutch gene.

This time it's karma for being a dick about leaving though. 😅

Was thumbing Gilman’s eyes

I watched Gilman and then Uguev’s next match, and my dominant thought both matches was Spencer Lee takes apart all three of those guys.

I did miss Japan at that weight, but that’s where I was at watching 57 kg so far.

My other thought was mark Perry’s a helluva coach

Oh my... a healthy spencer decimates this field. lesigh...

I'm going with WildTurks statement that there are no easy brackets in Worlds or Olympics. The best of the best. Obviously the US Olympic qualifying tournament had several guys that could have made noise at 86 kg. DT is wrestling like he did in 2018, preinjury. I'll be surprised if he doesn't have a gold medal around his neck tomorrow.

86 kg has a really good top 3 with DT, Yazdani, and Naifonov (or Kurugliev depending on who the Russians send each year), but it's very weak after that. Amine is a legit medal contender and he got beat by Trent Hidlay last fall who isn't even on the radar to make the top 3 here.

DT definitely had the easier path, but there's no hiding in the finals. He'll have to earn it over Yazdani. Based on what I've seen, I lean DT right now.

Uguev wins again beats the Iranian 8-3 TG will wrestle for bronze. After watching these matches there is no doubt in my mind a Healthy Spencer wold have taken home the Gold here.
Gilman wrestled well IMO, but Uguev did what Champions do and created and finished his opportunity at the crucial point of a close match (i.e. the end of it). Another what-if moment for Gilman. I guess I was pulling for him, but wasn't devastated when he lost.

He has to win his next match against Uzbekistan's Abdullaev to wrestle Iranian Atri for bronze (per Cody Goodwin).

David Taylor is wreaking havoc into the Finals. Good for him, a job well done to this point for sure.

I don't really care what club pays him to wrestle post college (though I'd obviously prefer HWC) or if he has diarrhea of the mouth. He's representing the USA, so he's my guy. I'd prefer Spencer at this point, but that wasn't in the cards.
Okay, fun hypothetical dilemma question then (and I open this up to everyone): A foreign wrestler comes to Iowa and becomes a black and gold bleeding Hawkeye before wrestling in the Olympics out of HWC faces a PSU wrestler who talks trash about Iowa but wrestles for the US. Who do you root for?

The guy in black and gold…?

And you forgot the part about that foreigner helping the Hawks win a National championship by half a point after pinning his (PSU?) opponent in the finals?

The USA wrestler, but I wouldn't be upset if the Hawkeye won and I'd cheer for him in every match not vs. USA. And not that it matters, but it is a lot easier to cheer for a PSU guy than an Okie State guy.

That's absolutely insane to me. Nationalist tribalism is strong I guess.
I wouldn’t call it “insane”, but I too am going with the Hawkeye at HWC every time because I am rooting for whatever is best for Iowa Wrestling. I always want to add to our gold medal tally. There’s just so much more to it than the arbitrary designation of a person’s citizenship.

...as opposed to parochialist tribalism?

Everyone is tribalistic. People biasedly support their family, friends, local community, sports team, alma mater, country, etc. over groups they don't identify with.

What I find insane is choosing to place precedence of country above all so highly that you'd support an athlete from the opposing school (who has trash talked / disparaged your school and who for every other sporting competition you cheer against) over a Hawkeye who isn't American.

I don't follow the logic of that tribalism precedence hierarchy.
