Omaha Biliew

among others.

2 words: Troy Davis
OK...two more: Darren Davis

Not isolated incidents, just the poster children
Both Davis brothers were full qualifiers out of high school. Troy had offers from a number of top programs, including Ohio State. Don't know whether Darren did, as it was clear where he was going.

What is the attraction of Lames or Iowa State?

I'm guessing lot of money will be changing hands. I can see it now Omaha advertising for Pioneer and John Deere.

Kids deserve to get paid more but NIL in its current form is benefitting a few, not all student athletes.

Iowa may not be getting these five star players but I personally prefer Fran's approach. The win-at-all-cost and instant gratification mentality has ruined our country. Ethics be damned.

Very sad

I mean this in all seriousness ISU doesn't have a good enough NIL program right now to pay him. If he wanted to get paid, he should have gone to the G-League and gotten around 500k. I don't think there is any possible way ISU will match that. We've been hearing for weeks he really likes TJ and the way he plays fits well with his style.

Quite frankly, ISU could never match what is being reported Proctor had from Iowa for example. Is it very sad he chose the Hawks?

I have to wonder , what is so unattractive at Iowa?
I don't think Iowa is unattractive, just maybe not the best fit for him. And from my completely untrained eye, I don't blame him. To me he looks a lot like Tyler Cook. Elite athleticism, high motor, finisher, but also, not a great shooter and at 6'8" without the ability to stretch the floor makes him a tweener, much like Cook. Cook was a great player, but Iowa's offense ran much much smoother through Luka than with Tyler. Now, if Omaha can shoot a high percentage, he is Keegan and he is a 1-year rental but I just don't see it.

When he left the state of Iowa I assumed any chance ISU had was gone. I don’t get too worked up about losing one-and-done-type players. Life continues on …

Predictable:

Iowa State fans here in droves seeking validation.

Iowa fans downplaying successful recruiting.

This thread needs @Roy L Fuchs. Yes, folks, with the right coach, you can recruit great players to the state of Iowa.
We get out-recruited by the Cedar Rapids YMCA D League. We pretty much go after the same players. Our b-ball recruiting has been 90% shit for decades with most fans making excuses as to why we can’t consistently attract top talent. They have been just that: EXCUSES not reasons. There are ZERO reasons why a Big Ten team offers most of the kids we have over the past 30 years. We would be middle of the pack in the MAC most years.

I'm as big of a hawk fan as the next guy, but their continued success in the NCAA tournament might be a reason why ISU recruits so much better than Iowa.

That's a really good get. I hope Iowa can land Estrella. That would take away some of the sting of this one. Has Iowa ever landed a top 25 recruit? Obviously Keegan SHOULD have been one but no one was fighting over him.

I'm pretty sure Al Lorenzen was one. There may have been others but he's the one that comes immediately to mind. Michael Payne, maybe.

And pardon me for my ignorance, but hasn't Iowa had the league MVP the past two years --different guys -- and a shot at next year's? Somebody must be recruiting pretty well.

Not sure why such a highly regarded recruit would go to ISU or Iowa for that matter. Why not Duke, Kentucky, Kansas etc

WTF? Fran's own children are getting NIL money...and there's nothing wrong with that.

Ed Horton was definitely a Top 25 recruit and I believe Roy Marble was too.

Congrats on a good class. As every year it will be interesting to see how they mesh as a team.

I am excited about watching players develop and it’s enjoyable to see kids with the smarts and poise Iowa has had representing them lately. Keegan and Kris, the guys at the media day for football, Luka and on and on.

I’m old, but the concept of student athlete is what makes college sports enjoyable for me. It’s sad to see it moving in a different direction with the portals and NIL.

Pierre Pierce would probably have been one :(

Horton, Marble, Settles, Lorenzen, Davis, Horner, Stokes, Payne ... all would have been right around that 25 mark if not higher in the 80s/90s. Not going to speak about 70 and earlier players as I do not know (though Connie Hawkins would have been as near the top as you can get....if stupid shit didn't happen)

Jeff Horner would have been pretty high.

Oh yea - Kenyon Murray would have been around the top 25.

...Is preferred over a dozen years without a sweet sixteen appearance.

Personally, I came this time to see the reasons that landing a 5-star recruit is a negative thing.
And I’m sure you weren’t disappointed.

I’m guessing there were similar reactions on CF to the Proctor commitment.

For the record, I wish Fran could recruit at a higher level. Of course, we’ll never know how all of this will unfold until it happens, but after taking over a two-win team and leading them to the Sweet 16, I think ISU fans have plenty of reason to be optimistic about the direction TJ is taking the program. I know, criminal here.

Your actually right - got curious and went found a composite ranking thingy from back then. Pierce came in at 32.

Others I mentioned - Horner was 59th (Brunner was 50th same class)

Worley was scored 27th - didnt think of him either. Reiner 41st.

...then they do not go any further back than that :(

Not sure Omaha is a true 1 and done guy, but I absolutely love his defensive intensity and how hard he plays. Kid is a dog from the videos and clips I’ve seen. He will kill it in Dewey Oxenburger’s system. It looks to me like Fran has made a decision on the kind of kids he wants and also who realistically thinks he can get and fit in his system. I’m ok w/that. Koch, hopefully Sandfort, and I know Harding aren’t going to blow you away with their athleticism but they can play.

I'm not really looking to pick a fight here, but not one of the guys you named would have been a lock to be in the top 25 national recruits for any given year. Maybe Ed Horton or Michael Payne. Excellent players absolutely. But top 25 and higher you are talking about one and done types before their freshman year starts. How good they ended up is not relative in the discussion And yes, I know Davis ended up being one of those.

Not sure why I’m replying to this as your claim is so outlandish. You’re expecting people to actually believe Troy Davis was a full qualifier and still picked a bottom

I didn’t want to reply to your post but it’s so absurd that I must. You’re telling everyone that Troy Davis was a full qualifier and had a full offer from Ohio State. Davis, a kid with no connection to ISU just happened to pick them over Ohio State? A Iowa State program that was bottom 5 in the nation. I get being a fan and not always seeing beyond that but your claim is hilarious.
